4ENVIRONMENTAL INDEXRESULTS4.1 The Index modelThe Environment Index assesses the extent towhich environmental responsibility is integratedthroughout an organisation, and provides abenchmark for both environmental managementand performance in impact areas material to theorganisation.processes make up 5% of an organisation’s overallscore, and willingness to disclose contributes theremaining 5%. Within theManagement section, all questions have beenequally weighted, except for the Supply Chainand Stewardship questions, which carry doublethe weight of others. Within the Performancesection, all three impact areas carry the sameweight. Within the Assurance section, assuranceThe HE Benchmarking Project Environment Indexbenchmarked HEIs against their sector peers(HE Sector Average) and companies that haveparticipated in the National Environment Index2005 (providing the ‘Business Average’), on thebasis of their environmental management andperformance in key impact areas.Figure 2 compares the HE sector to sectors withinthe Business Index.
