9RECOMMENDATIONS FORTHE FUTUREThis report recommends the continuation ofthe HE Benchmarking Project, as it exists:administered by BITC, led by HEFCE, with thebacking of the EAUC. Project progress must betracked to ensure the programme is advancingas expected. Agreed key performance indicatorsshould be in place to measure this progress, suchas participation rates and Index performance rates.‘Lessons learnt’ from the project thus far shouldbe recognised, such as improving networkingopportunities, and providing HE sector-specificguidance notes.In the longer term, consideration should be madeto the Indices being made public. This wouldencourage the participating HEIs to be “pro-active”by using their participation as a differentiator inpublications used to promote their respectiveInstitution’s to key stakeholders - including localcommunities and students. An exit plan shouldalso be developed to ensure the programme’ssuccess as a self-sustaining activity. Consultationwith project partners, participants and HEFCEwill be paramount to the continued success andevolution of the HE sector benchmarking journeythat we have already begun.Universities that Count35
