4. Environmental Index Results<strong>Universities</strong> that CountFigure 2The twenty-five HEIs in the pilot project makeup the ‘HE sector average’ for these results. TheBITC Environment Index 2005 average was 83%.Seasoned HEIs that have been benchmarking inthe BITC Y&H Regional Environment Index for thepast six years are significantly advanced. Theiraverage, when extracted from the overall sectoraverage, was a strong 84%. Compared to this,newcomers to the Index achieved an average of45%.Figure 3 shows the HE sector average across theEnvironment Index, and compares with the overallBusiness average. For reference, each chart isnormalised to 100%.4.4 Environmental Management (HE SectorAverage 55%, Business Average 86%)Environmental management encompasses theextent to which an organisation understandsand manages its environmental impacts and,where appropriate, makes environmental issuesan integral part of its business strategy. TheManagement section of the Index comprises of:key issues methodologies, leadership, policy,objectives, targets, employee environmentalprogramme, communication with externalstakeholders, environmental managementsystems (EMS), audit, supplier programme andstewardship.Figure 4 shows the HE sector average across themanagement areas, and compares with the overallBusiness average.Figure 312
