Message from theBoard ofTrusteesb y W i l l i a m J e n n i n g s , C h a i rIn a year marked bythe decline in theeconomy, our entireschool communityrespondedpositively, forgingahead andcontinuing theprogress of the past several years. Fiveyears ago, we launched “OpeningWorlds of Opportunity: a Campaignfor the Waldorf School of Garden City”and this past October, we celebratedthe dedication of our newly renovatedlibrary, renamed the Miller Library, inhonor of former Trustee, John Miller, and former faculty member and currentTrustee, Kristin Miller. This celebrationwas the crowning achievement of thisimportant campaign.Throughout this past year, thefaculty continued to provide a highquality Waldorf education to ourstudents. Parents, alumni and friendssupported the School through theirparticipation in the Annual Fund, theWindows Campaign, and many otherschool-wide activities. At the Spring Festival, wecelebrated and dedicated the School’snewly renovated courtyard in honor ofalumni parents and longtimebenefactors, Marilyn and NormanCranin. A Trustee at the WaldorfSchool since 1985, Marilyn is theBoard’s longest serving member, usingher passion and commitment forfundraising on the Board’s DevelopmentCommittee.Once again this year, I have hadthe privilege and honor of acting as theChair of the School’s Board of Trusteesand would like to thank each memberof the Board for their efforts on behalfof this School. In particular, I wouldlike to thank Hans-Christian Brechbühl’78 as he retires from the Board after 10years of dedicated service. During thoseyears, Hans drove nearly 300 miles eachway from his home in Vermont toattend our Board meetings. Throughhis efforts, our school and Camp GlenBrook have significantly broadened anddeveloped, and we are grateful to Hansfor his time, energy and leadership. In closing, I ask the entire Waldorfcommunity to do all that you can topromote enrollment in our school. Thestrength of our School is possible fromthe strength of families like your own.2

Message from theFacultyChairb y S a b i n e K u l l yLooking back overthe year – whethervisiting a LowerSchool classroom,a studentassembly, or aHigh Schoolsoccer game –what I experienced was an environmentfilled with content, structure, and love. The beautifully tended ground of oureducational philosophy enabled me toimmediately begin my work as FacultyChair, supporting growth anddevelopment in areas throughout theSchool. How wonderful to work in anenvironment which is eager and readyto become something more! Two areas stand out for me withspecial significance. The first isregarding parent outreach; specifically, ensuring that parents feel more activelyheard and closely included in the dailylife of the School. Regular breakfast“conversations,” open to all parents, were an excellent resource forcommunication and feedback. I amexcited that these forums will continue, and several dates are already on thecalendar for the coming year. Thebreakfast meetings also provided ideasfor deepening parent education. When aseducators we can demonstrate how formdrawing in the 4th grade relates tomathematical concepts in the 9th grade– to use just one example – then ourparents will become even strongeradvocates for our School and Waldorfeducation. This leads to my second area ofreflection, regarding facultydevelopment. This year, the faculty and Ibegan a journey of deepening, exploring, and finally experiencing Waldorfeducation. It is a practical reality that noamount of words can truly convinceanybody of anything, unless there is anunderlying experience. Such experienceis the foundation of our education. It isthe reason for every field trip, everyscience experiment, every dramaproduction, and every memorized poem.Experience deepens the teacher’s evergrowingknowledge and guides theeducation of the children, andexperience forms the foundation of ourcommunity’s capacity to face thechallenges of our time.3

Job lossescombined with thedecline in the valueof homes andinvestments has reduced the ability ofparents to afford a private schooleducation. While we have workedthoughtfully with every familyexperiencing financial difficulty, not allhave been able to continue. Prospectivefamilies are also finding it moredifficult to identify adequate financialresources. We are fortunate that ourdecrease is not as severe as thatexperienced by other schools; however, enrollment and retention continue to beour focus points.History shows that difficultcircumstances often give rise to insightand innovation. The Waldorf School ofGarden City is strongly positioned totransform the current adversity into anopportunity for future growth anddevelopment. With a number of criticalcapital improvements completed, ourSchool is physically attractive andeducationally functional. The capacityof the School’s leadership to makethoughtful, and sometimes difficult, financial decisions ensures continuedfiscal stability. Our heightened effort toposition the Waldorf School as anoutstanding educational choice includescritically assessing and improving ourmarketing, advertising and outreachstrategies. Finally, the need to manageexpenses requires us to continuallyrefocus our pedagogical vision, ensuringthat students educated at the WaldorfSchool today receive the skills andcapacities needed to thrive in therapidly changing world of tomorrow.Transforming the currentchallenges will require the continuedfocus and vision of the School’s coreleadership groups – the Board, administration, and College of Teachers– along with the ongoing commitmentof our of entire School community. What will emerge is a stronger school –grounded in the core principles ofWaldorf education, yet flexible enoughto meet the changing needs of ourstudents and their families.Total Operating Expense: $6,859 (100%)4

Message from theOffice ofDevelopmentb y M a r j o r i e P. J e a n - P a u l , D i r e c t o rA challenge bringsout the best in ourcommunity. Whenpresented with theopportunity toreplace the HighSchool windows, individuals near andfar joined together to successfullyachieve this goal. Over 120 donorscontributed to the Windows Challenge, with 79 individuals making a gift inaddition to their Annual Fundcontribution and capital campaignpledge payments. It also inspired 15people to make their first-time gift tothe School in support of this specialappeal. Overall a wonderful display ofdedication to our School from so manycurrent and alumni families! In total, $533,058 was raised thispast year through the Annual Fund. While many gifts were targeted forspecific projects, $76,173 wasunrestricted and could be used tosupport the general operations of theSchool. Since the true cost of aWaldorf education is not covered fullyby student tuition, unrestricted giving isan area we must increase in the future. In addition to financial support, anumber of in-kind donations werereceived, including laptop computers forthe Miller Library, a drum set for thestudent jazz group, and the refinishingof the gymnasium floor. These gifts arejust a few of the ways our supportersfurther enhanced the educationalexperiences for our students. We arealso grateful to the many volunteerswho gave countless hours of their timein support of the School. At special events like the MillerLibrary Opening and the CraninCourtyard Dedication, we honored thecontributions of community leaderswhose dedication paved the way for theSchool’s current success. We lookforward to our third Gala Dinner onMay 14, 2010 to celebrate the Schooland recognize outstanding individualswhose efforts have helped to make thisthe thriving community we all enjoy. Finally, I wish to thank everyonefor welcoming me this past year. Message from theParentAssociationb y M a r i o n F l o m e n h a f t , C o - C h a i rIn-keeping with the21st centuryhousehold, theParent Associationcompleted manychanges in itscommunicationsthis year. As partof the School’s commitment tosustainability, we utilized more e-mailcommunication. New committees wereformed to ease the work of the ParentAssociation's co-chairs and to assist theparent representatives. A large part ofthis shift was due to the collaborationbetween the School’s administrationand the PA co-chairs in evaluating theneeds of today's Waldorf families.Communication: Together withSusan Braun and Sabine Kully, wecreated outlets - such as the "ParentCoffee Hour" - for parents to addresstheir concerns and to locate answersquickly and efficiently.Child Involvement: This year theentire School community contributedto Family and Children's Association, the human service network for LongIsland, that coordinates a system ofprograms to help babies, children, adults, senior citizens, and families leadmore self-sufficient lives. Thisorganization was chosen because of itsproximity to the School and multigenerationalprograms which raise ourchildren’s awareness of others.Participation: Attendance wasstrong at monthly Parent Associationmeetings. Parents enjoyed participatingin the life of the School, airing concerns, and making and recording meetingmotions. Changing the monthlymeeting time to 8:00 a.m. has proven tobe more convenient for most parents. In total, the Parent Associationraised $43,169 this year. The annualFall Fair raffle was a banner success, due to the hard work of co-chairs NinaJustman and Cathryn Mezzo. The rafflebrought in as much money as all theother events combined, and helped theParent Association contribute $10,000towards the High School windowreplacement challenge grant.I wish to thank my fellow ParentAssociation co-chairs Carole Halvorsenand Maria Kramer for their insight, talent and team spirit.6

Message fromCampGlen Brookb y Tw a i n B r a d e n ‘ 8 8 , D i r e c t o rThe last 20 yearshas seen muchchange in forestmanagement.Images of greatswaths of clear-cutland, leavingbehind miles ofstumps that would make the Lorax cry, were seen as an inevitable result of anyforestry activities. Not surprisingly, environmentalists and loggers were atodds, each seeing the other’s position asunrealistic and irresponsible. Recently,a more pragmatic view of forestry hasemerged; one that accommodates theeconomic interests of forestedcommunities, where logging jobssupport the economy, while at the sametime taking the long-view towardsustainable land stewardship to protectthe interests of wildlife and reduce theatmosphere's urgent carbon problem. Here at Glen Brook we’ve decidedto participate in this trend byimplementing a forest managementplan and establishing the property as acertified tree farm. This does not meanthat Glen Brook’s forests will be cutdown. It means that the forests will be“managed,” certain trees cut – and soldfor lumber or cordwood – to encouragethe growth of others so that the overallresult maximizes the forest’s potential. There are four prongs to tree farmcertification: wood, water, recreationand wildlife. The first, wood, simplymeans the use of wood for building, fuel(maple syrup evaporation and woodstoves), or sale. The protection ofwatersheds is equally vital to the plan, since irresponsible forest managementclogs streams, kills fish, and poisonsdrinking water. Recreation can meanhiking or biking trails, camping, or, inGlen Brook’s case, a high- and lowropescourse. The wildlife componentinvolves protecting certain habitats asshelter and food sources for nativespecies: hemlock for deer stands andwinter forage; soft-mast berry trees likewild cherry for songbirds and bears;and hard-mast nut trees like hickory, beech and oak for squirrels andchipmunks. Responsible forestry takesyears to implement, yet the small step oftree farm certification will ensurehealthy forests for Camp Glen Brookand all our children.7
