WASTE MANAGEMENT SUSTAINABILITY REPORT 2014 39GROWING RECYCLINGUsing DART to Facilitate “Green”Construction and DemolitionOur Diversion and Recycling Tracking Tool(DART) helps project planners, contractors,architects and building ownersset “green” performance targets andmeasure their progress during construction,renovation and demolition projects.DART is used across the United Statesand Canada to track both materialsreused on construction project sitesas well as those processed for recyclingoff-site. The diversion rates anddocumentation captured through DARTsupport LEED certification and corporatesustainability reporting.In 2013, more than 370,000 tons ofdiverted construction and demolitionwaste were tracked using DART. Ourtop 10 construction industry customersalone put more than 90,000 tonsof materials to reuse and achieved a70 percent diversion rate. These customersused DART to create diversionplans, monitor their progress and report373,934tons of constructionand demolition wastediversion were tracked usingDART in 2013their final performance on a project-byprojectbasis. With a few keystrokes,they were able to see exactly how theirproject was performing.Recycling Fly Ash for Coal Power PlantsAir pollution regulations that requireparticulates to be captured ratherthan emitted have led to an increasein the carbon levels found in fly ash, abyproduct of coal combustion. Fly ash iscommonly recycled by using it in concrete.But elevated carbon levels renderthe material less useful for this purpose.That’s why Waste Managementacquired Carbon Blocker, a patentedfly ash treatment system for coal-firedpower plants. Carbon Blocker enablesmore fly ash to bypass the landfill andinstead become a core component ofconcrete. Combining liquid chemistryand bulk powder handling, the systemcreates fly ash that can be used withpredictable performance in air-entrainedconcrete. 20 Carbon Blocker can be permanentlyinstalled at power plants.
