WASTE MANAGEMENT SUSTAINABILITY REPORT 2014 97ENGAGING WITH COMMUNITIESSupport When Disasters StrikeWhen disasters strike, WasteManagement responds with recoveryefforts — particularly when the disastershappen in our areas of operation.In May 2013, a deadly tornado toucheddown in Moore, Oklahoma. Almostimmediately, Waste Management beganorganizing employees to assist in therecovery effort. We sent in teams fromneighboring states to help manage themassive amount of debris. We focusedespecially on the Crutcho Public School,which is located in the community nearone of our landfills. Crews from WasteManagement assisted with the cleanup,which included salvaging for supplies,desks and other equipment that couldbe saved.Several Waste Management employees,as well as members of their extendedfamilies, either lost homes during thetornado or suffered significant propertydamage. The Waste ManagementEmployees Care Fund, a nonprofit entity,was available to provide short-termfinancing assistance to those facingunexpected hardships.In addition, Waste Managementdonated $50,000 to the AmericanRed Cross Disaster Relief Fund tosupport response efforts to tornadosin Oklahoma and Texas.In late 2013, Waste Managementresponded to the Typhoon Haiyandisaster in the Philippines and a rash oftornadoes in the Midwestern UnitedStates with a $25,000 donation to theAmerican Red Cross and its NaturalDisaster Relief Fund. We also agreed tomatch up to $25,000 of employees’ personalcontributions to the relief effortsin the Midwest or the Philippines.In the spring of 2014, the small town ofOso, Washington, was hit with a massivemudslide and flood. The disaster tookout the entire community, killing morethan 40 people and destroying dozensof homes. Waste Management servicedthe community, and several of ouremployees lived in or near the area.
