At that time, Julesburg was known as the“Wickedest Town of the West, and was a favorite placefor rowdy sorts, soldiers, traders, hunters and otherfrontiersmen who spent their money in riotous pleasure.The stage company sent Jack Slade, a SweetwaterDivision Agent to Julesburg to oust Beni who wassuspected in tampering with the U.S. Mail. After anenduring feud, legend has it, Jack threatened Jules hewould kill him and cut off his ears. The romanticizedtale of Slade pumping bullet after bullet into Jules, thencutting off his ears and carrying them in his pocket isexciting to say the least, but undocumented.In the highly acclaimed movie “Dances with Wolves.” Lt.John Dunbar was stationed at Ft. Sedgwick, originallyknown as Camp Rankin. When the Town of Julesburg wasraided by Indians in February, 1865, its few citizens fledto Ft. Sedgwick and watched their town burned to theground. Although no structures remain on the grounds,visitors are able to visualize the post’s environment andsize.Prior to the completion of the transcontinental telegraphline, Pony Express riders carried mail in both directionsbetween St. Joseph, MO, and Sacramento, CA. Julesburgis the only Colorado town where a “home-station” waslocated, there both horses and riders switched.Located between Interstates I-76 and I-80, transportationhas long been a historical piece of history. The UnionPacific’s “end of track” reached Julesburg in 1867. TheLincoln Highway dogleg entered Colorado at Julesburgand closely followed what is now known as Highway138. Traveling to Holyoke on Highway 6 or 385 gives youthe sense of how much agriculture plays a role in the successof Holyoke and Phillips County as a whole. Wheat, corn,sugar beets, millet and other fields line the peaceful drive toHolyoke. Holyoke, the “City of Pride and Progress”, is home tonearly 2,300 residents; while the Phillips County population isclose to 4,500.Many local businesses line Main Street and offer variety tothose coming to shop or eat.
