A Brush with FilmingBehind the scenes on location with A Brush with ArtEyes in my toes would be an asset! Hound TorSome of you will be familiar with the term'outtakes - it describes all the shots in a film thatare not used, or are edited out of the final version. There are many reasons for outtakes to happen -it could be that someone forgot their lines, anunwitting member of the public crossed in front ofthe camera, or a jet plane flew overhead.Sometimes the same scene has to be shot time andtime again. This was the first time I'd had my owntelevision series, and making 12 programmes onlocation is really going in at the deep end!Although rd appeared on television before, I soonfound that there were two major problems I had toovercome. The first was to be able to walk oncamera to a designated spot where a marker hadbeen placed on the ground, and then turn tocamera and deliver my words, right on cue.Believe me, this isn't an easy thing to do whenyou're supposed to be lookingaround you at the view in orderto pick a suitable spot forpainting, and therefore you can'tlook at the ground - let aloneyour marker! My first experience of havingto do this was in Programme 3when we filmed at Hound Toron Dartmoor. I had been givenmy route and we did the firsttake, but I was too far awayfrom the camera when I stoppedand turned around - so, sorryAlwyn, take 2! On the nexttake, more by luck thanjudgement, I found the correctspot and started to deliver mylines, only to be upstaged by alow-flying helicopter. For take3, the crew let me into a 'trade80
