Even in summer, the weather in Britainis a gamble. When we filmed in Polperrofor Programme 7, the weather was terrible.Rain was coming down so hard, it wasbouncing three or four inches off the roadoutside our hotel, and the clouds were solow, they were practically bouncing off theroad as well! Since this programme wasspecifically designed to demonstratepainting sunlight and shadows, theShelter from the storm. Polperrosituation called for some quick rethinking!Eventually, a solution was found - we were to usea fisherman's hut that the harbour master wouldmake available to us. The programme was quicklyrewritten in the hut, while drying clothes, settingup cameras and microphones, etc., and theprogramme was opened by me stating the facts, plainly and with nothing acted - that Fd expectedthe sun in Polperro, but just look at the rain!Needless to say, we got through it all and finishedthe programme. Everyone worked very hard andgot very wet, but this particular programme isnow one of my firm favourites! The previous programme, which was shot atShaldon Beach, had its moments, too. We weregoing to film on the beach and I was to paint aview at the end of the town with the houses alongthe river estuary. This programme was to be aboutlight and shade and it was a glorious summermorning when we arrived and made our camp onthe lovely soft sand. I got myself positioned for thepainting and waited for the crew to get theirequipment set up. Fifteen minutes later, a groupof holidaymakers sat down on the beach near us83
