Exeter. I must admit that I wasn't feelingvery inspired that morning, but Idecided to stop thinking negatively, called on all my professional experienceand started with a blank piece of paperwith the cameras turning. To start withI found drawing under camera a littlenerve-wracking, as there is not muchlicence for an incorrect line with thistype of subject. If you are drawingtrees, for instance, and you draw abranch too high or too low, it stilllooks like a tree, but you can'treposition a doorway or windowwithout it being noticed! However, after a while I became really absorbedin the work and when I had finishedthe drawing I was very pleased withit. In fact, in the end, I was pleasedwith the painting, too. I enjoyeddoing it, especially the sequence inthe film where I am painting thebaskets of flowers on the cottagewalls. So I'm actually glad I lost thatThe start of a long day - and a feeling of beingwanted. Brixbam Harbour...nearly finished! Brixbam Harbourbattle over the Devon cottages, because thisturned out to be one of my favourite programmesin the series, too! When I did the big painting of BrixhamHarbour for Programme 12, I think thecameramen deserved a medal. It was acomplicated painting and it took four hours tofilm altogether. This naturally included breaks forpaint to dry, camera batteries to be changed, andso on. When doing such long filming, nerves canget frayed and tempers can run high, but it's ateam effort and everyone gives that little bit extra. And, of course, we did have a terrific team! So, aswith the rest of the series, at the end of the day(outtakes excluded!) Brixham Harbour was 'allright on the night' and I was very happy with it.Ihope this insight into making the televisionseries will entertain you when you are looking ator working from this book. I hope too that it willinspire you to go out and find some interestinglocations to paint yourself. Of course, if it helpsyou to learn, you can copy any of the paintings inthis book, but don't try to copy them too exactly,or you will find that your paintings will look tightand unspontaneous. If the colours aren't quite thesame, or the composition varies a little - so muchthe better. Even I would have a job to exactly copymy own work!85
