Obituary : Jane Brotherton Walker (1925-2009)

Research: Studies on the taxonomy, hosts and distribution of African ticks,
particularly of the genus Rhipicephalus.
Teaching: Part-time lecturer from 1952-1963 on ticks and other arthropod
parasites of livestock at the Faculty of Veterinary Science, Makerere
College (now Faculty of Veterinary Science, University of Nairobi).
Post graduate Co-promoter of an MSc degree, University of Potchefstroom, South
supervision: Africa.
Committees: Editorial Committee of the East African Wildlife Journal for 4 years.
Edited the Quarterly Bulletin of the Scientific and Technical
Committee of the East African Wildlife Society for the same period.
Editorial Committee of the Onderstepoort Journal of Veterinary
Research from 1969-2000.
Membership of Professional Societies
1953: Elected to Membership of the Institute of Biology, London.
1964: Member, Zoological Society of Southern Africa.
1972: Member, Parasitological Society of Southern Africa.
1982: Elected to Honorary Associate Membership of the South African
Veterinary Association.
Awards
1988: Elsdon-Dew Medal awarded by the Parasitological Society of
southern Africa, for services rendered to Parasitology in Africa.
1998: Agricultural Science and Technology Woman of the Year Award.
1998: Theiler Memorial Trust Award for exceptional service rendered to
Veterinary Science in Africa.
2000-2002: Appointed as an Honorary Professor in the Department of Veterinary
Tropical Diseases, Faculty of Veterinary Science, University of
Pretoria.
