United Nations and PartnersIntroductionSudan work plan 20125ForewordSudan faces a number of challenges following the independence of South Sudan. The UN and Partners’ Work Plan providesan opportunity for a wide range of humanitarian stakeholders to pursue their common interest in addressing some of thesechallenges through the delivery of life-saving assistance, and ensuring that vulnerable people have the ability to build and pursueproductive lives. The humanitarian community will continue to respond to the humanitarian challenges facing Sudan through a robust emergencyoperation to meet the needs of people in affected areas. At the same time, the 2012 Work Plan also aims to empower vulnerablepeople and communities by providing opportunities to rebuild their lives. This Work Plan reflects the growing consensus that thetime has come to look beyond emergency relief wherever possible to provide people with the opportunities and choices to buildnew, productive and dignified lives. This will require delivering assistance to support self-reliance, to help communities rebuildthemselves, and to pursue durable solutions.Ultimately, however, it is the people of Sudan and its’ leaders who are responsible for leveraging the achievements of the WorkPlan into stability and development. The humanitarian community stands ready to help by meeting life-saving needs in theshort-term and, where the environment is conducive, to ensure a smooth transition to recovery and development activities in thelonger-term. Helping build capacities so that humanitarian needs are both prepared for and responded to by local and nationalinstitutions is a critical part of international humanitarian engagement.I would like to take the opportunity to thank all the members of the humanitarian community in Sudan for the invaluable work theyundertake to save lives and reduce suffering, often under difficult and dangerous conditions. I would also like to extend sincerethanks to all the donors that have generously contributed to humanitarian work in the Sudan. Your contributions have made aprofound impact on the lives of Sudanese communities and individuals. The year 2012 will be no less momentous than 2011, but I am confident that together we will rise to the challenge and continueworking to address both existing and new humanitarian needs. At the same time, we will revitalize our efforts to support sustainablesolutions that enable people to live securely with dignity.Mr. Peter de ClercqUnited Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator a.i.
