AMONG THEM:1. Small group or class projects emanating from the curriculum.2. Small group or class projects emanating from a community or industry need. These can be combined into some type of service learning.3. Individual student projects. These are often capstone experiences required forgraduation.4. An entire quarter or semester class activity.5. A school within a school.6. As a component of a student’s career pathway or major.EXAMPLES OF PROJECT-BASED LEARNING:Drawings (including cartoons) ChartsModelsPerformancesGraphsArt workNarrativesProductsResearch projectsDisplaysQuestions to Consider in Project-Based Learning1. What do I want students to know and be able to do as a result of this project? How willthey be different when the project is completed? What complex thinking skill(s) will beenhanced? What attitudes and/or behaviors will be affected?2. Will this project produce the desired results? Is it interesting, rigorous and connected tothe curriculum? Will students believe the project is worth doing?3. What information will students need in order to carry out this project? Where are theymost likely to find it, e.g., in publications, from other people, on the Internet? How can Ifacilitate their getting this information? How much information will I provide, and howmuch will I expect students to find on their own? What information will students bring tothe project from their own experiences? What are the most effective ways for identifyingand disseminating this information?4. What different roles will be required for this project, e.g., leader, facilitator, organizer, presenter, creator/composer, investigator, etc. Will all students perform all roles? Howwill students be assigned different roles?5. What tasks will be required to complete the project? Will they need to be completed inany particular order? How much time can be allowed for each task? What kind oftimeline would be helpful?6. What SCANS skills can be acquired through the completion of this project? How manystate and district learning standards can be acquired/demonstrated through thecompletion of this project?2.30CURRICULUM GUIDE: TEACHING & FACILITATING LEARNING - LEVEL 1I
