<strong>Thank</strong> YouWithout our volunteers, St David’s Hospicewould not be able to carry out our vital work.It’s as simple as that.Our kind and loyal volunteers are a treasure, contributingtheir experience, time and energy to help others.Whether it is serving tea and cakes at Café Dewior preparing clothes at our Distribution Centre,we thank each and every one of you for making a realand important difference to our charity.SHEILA’S STORYWhen Sheila’s husband Derekpassed away at St David’sHospice four years ago, shevowed to help the charity asmuch as she could. But shenever dreamed she’d be able toachieve so much.Through organising fundraisingevents with passion and hardwork, Sheila has gone on toraise an amazing £11,000for the Hospice, as well asvolunteering as a receptionist.Sheila, who lives at Pendyffryn Caravan Park in Dwygyfylchi said:“The Hospice allows patients to die with dignity and I wanted to givesomething back to them, to say thank you.”Her desire to help the charity came about when her husband wasstaying on the Inpatient Ward and the Hospice had a power cut.“I witnessed how well the nurses worked through it and struggled on.They always do a marvellous job, with a smile on their faces.”It was as a result of this, that she decided to set herself the ambitioustarget of raising £10,000 for the Hospice.This year, following the annual Fun Day at the Pendyffryn CaravanPark, and including her most recent Dawn Walk sponsorship, shesmashed her target and continues to raise even more.”She explained: “The Hospice is always in need of money to fund thevital work that happens there and I wanted to do my bit to contribute.“I miss my husband every day, but I can take comfort from thethought that he was given such a peaceful end to his life.”As well as fundraising, Sheila takes a lot of joy from volunteering hertime at the Hospice, as the smiling face greeting visitors who comethrough the main doors.She said: “I’m happy to do a shift on reception whenever theyneed me. I’ve met some really interesting people and great friendsthrough volunteering. We have a good laugh and it brings me a lot ofsatisfaction.”<strong>Thank</strong>s to Sheila’s tireless campaigning, everybody in Dwygyfylchiknows about the work of St David’s Hospice!She added: “I want to make others aware of hospice care, and here onthe caravan park, everyone most definitely know all about St David’s!Most of them have a Dewi Lottery Bear and they’ll always stop andask me how things are going with the fundraising.All the caravan owners, as well as local businesses and the community,have been a great help to me with holding the annual fun days andevents.It has been a real team effort.Fundraising and volunteering keep me busy and most of all I enjoy it.”Enquiries: Contact the Volunteering Department on 01492 879058 ext. 222St. David’s Hospice Newsletter - Autumn/Winter 2010
