Angus & Area Community Guide 2014 - 3

President’s Message
The Angus & Area
Chamber of Commerce is
excited to be celebrating
its 5th Anniversary, supporting our
local and area business members
and our valued community. Every
year our annual Community Guide
strives to bring to you valuable and
insightful information about our
area businesses and their products
and services along with informative
insight about the community in
which we live, work and play. The
Chamber is proud to be involved
in a number of local initiatives and
events, like the Essa Salmon Festival
& Riverbank Derby and Buy Local
Shop Angus which provide many
benefits to our local and area
businesses and our community
members.
The Chamber’s primary goal is to
support and represent its member’s
economic growth and development
within our local and surrounding
communities. The long term vitality
and success of our businesses as well
as the attraction of new businesses
to our area strongly depend on
our diversity, collaboration and
continued support of each other.
Every one of you is critical to the
success of our community and its
economy!
In addition to the Chamber’s
role as an advocate for our business
members, we bring educational
and networking opportunities. We
offer businesses a chance to meet
other business people which can
result in new partnerships, working
arrangements and growth. If you
operate a business in Angus or the
surrounding area and you are not
yet a member, I encourage you to
consider joining us. The cost is
very reasonable and the numerous
benefits realized are well worth the
investment. For current members,
please do continue to come out and
be involved. Remember, you get out
of membership what you want and
we want is for to you to get much
more than expected! The Chamber
is here to help you succeed and
prosper!
Many thanks to our Board of
Directors, old and new, who have
volunteered so much of their time
and energy towards the continued
growth and development of the
Chamber. You have made it
possible for the AACC to celebrate
its 5th Anniversary. I would also
like to thank the members of the
committee responsible for the
development of the Community
Guide. This incredible publication
shows that hard work, teamwork
and dedication can make anything
possible!
Angus & Area Community Guide 2014 - 7

The History of Angus
Reprint of “Down, Never Out, Angus Up Again” By Peter Dunlop from Toronto Telegram Sept 1954
Angus, Sept. 18 – Timber was
the commodity responsible
for bringing hundreds of
lumbermen to this booming community
during the mid-19th century. And when
timber went, Angus suffered its first big
setback.
By 1870, Angus, which 40 years before
had been surrounded by a vast forest of
evergreens, and whose only inhabitants
had been Indians, was well on the way to
becoming a metropolis of Upper Canada.
Altogether, at the peak of its prosperity,
the village boasted five hotels, five general
stores, four blacksmith shops, a land office
and wagon and carriage shop, two tailors,
two photographers, two liquor stores and a
full-time physician.
The turn of the century, however, saw
a much different picture of the expanding
little village. With nearby plains shorn of
their wood, the numerous sawmills soon
ground to a halt. Population, which has
once neared the 2,000 mark, dwindled to
a mere 600. For a time there was not even
a general store in the village.
Angus has had its ups and downs.
Today another wave of relative prosperity
has swept over the community. Servicemen
from nearby Camp Borden have found
Angus an ideal location to build homes for
their families and dozens of new houses
are being built along the village outskirts.
Nothing before or since can compare
with the boom experienced here during
World War I. Late in 1914, Camp Borden
was established. It might be said of that
period that Angus was re-established.
UPS AND DOWNS
From almost a ghost town, the
village mushroomed overnight, like a
sprawling northern mining community.
Streets quickly became lined with stores,
temporary hotels, refreshment booths and
amusement places of all shapes and sizes.
Even a theatre was opened. But only until
the end of the war did business thrive. The
village returned to its own quiet tempo of
living.
World War II brought little change.
Servicemen stationed at Camp Borden
discovered automobiles could take them
more quickly to the bright lights of
Barrie. In 1946 it became certain
that a permanent nature would be
given to the camp and the village
again began to boom. Today close
to 40 percent of the population
of 950 are servicemen and their
families.
An indication of recent
expansion can be had by the
fact that a new four-room
public school, constructed
two years ago to replace an
antiquated two-room building,
is already filled to capacity and the former
schoolhouse has been reopened for classes.
In recent years, The Ontario
Department of Lands and Forests’ Tree
Seed Plant, a 40-acre tract of land within
the police village limits has helped to
place Angus “back on the map”. Seeds
from all over Ontario are shipped here for
processing and storing. Later when space
in the five Ontario nurseries becomes
available, the seeds are shipped back
out again, planted and later placed in
reforestation areas.
“When seed leaves here it goes to either
one of our nurseries at Midhurst, Orono,
St. Williams, Kemptville, or Thunder Bay,”
explained Forestry Branch superintendent
Edward Lewis.
“The five places produce 30 to 35
million trees a year and all the seed comes
from here.”
Small In Size But Not In Outlook Busy commercial and historic centre of Angus has store, first operated by
founder of the village, and post office, now run by his grandson. Cairn, at right, honors World War I dead.
8 - Angus & Area Community Guide 2014

The History of Angus
The plant employs a total of 16 men
and was originally responsible for a
huge reforestation project on the plains
adjoining the village where 19th century
woodsmen had harvested indiscriminately.
ONCE WAS PINE RIVER
Although its original founder was
one Jonas Tar Bush, who purchased land
on which the village now stands in 1852,
Angus received its name from Simcoe
County’s first Member of Parliament,
Angus Morrison. Until then it had been
known as Pine River.
Records show the area’s fist lumberman
came looking for masts and spars for sailing
vessels for His Majesty’s Royal Navy. Pine
logs 110 feet long were not uncommon and
some required 12 to 15 teams of horses to
haul them to the railway.
At the same time choice trees were being
cut for masts and spars, the squared timber
industry was in full swing. Most of it was
shipped to the seaboard either
by rail or by floating down
the St. Lawrence. European
markets consumed most of
the harvest.
Simcoe County’s first
woman ordained minister,
Rev. Florence Hunter,
described by Angus
residents as “one of the
most active ministers we’ve
ever had” has been at Angus’ Wesley United
Church here since early July. Only other
church in the village is Zion Presbyterian,
at which Rev. Karam Guergis is minister.
Each year, Angus’ Horticultural Society
sponsors vegetables, flower and bird-house
building competition for village children.
It is also responsible for the annual spring
cemetery cleanup and maintaining a cairn
to World War I veterans.
Wonderful Woodlands
Majestically flanked by rows of tall
trees, a bus and a truck are about to
enter Camp Borden, just outside of
Angus. Trees like these provided an
early boom; irresponsible lumbering
turned Angus into a ghost town. Now
the forests grow again, a good omen,
and a tree seed plant helps Angus to
keep on the map.
HOTEL fire Dominion House Hotel was destroyed by fire 1939.
Near Barrie
Just 67 miles
away
• The government ordered the survey of Sunnidale Road from Barrie in
1830. For the next 20 years settlement was very slow.
• A sawmill began to operate near where Angus now stands. Jonas Tar
Bush purchased land around the sawmill. This land was part of a tract
of solid pine, red and white.
• The Northwestern Railway had just been completed to Collingwood
in 1855. The route passed a sawmill and a village sprung up and was
named Pine River Village.
• Jonas Tar Bush and W.M. Proudfoot formed a partnership and in
1857 laid out a plan for the town of “Pine River”. Later they renamed
it Angus after Angus Morrison, the first MP of Simcoe County.
Angus History at-a-glance
•Angus was a shipping centre for lumber produced in the local mills.
Railways yard was enlarged.
• At one time, Angus had 17 sawmills and a population of 2,000.
• In 1914, Camp Borden became a training centre and, since Angus was
so close, became alive again.
• Today Angus continues to grow in population and thrive with
schools, parks, businesses, recreational clubs and facilities and many
communities. Places such as Peacekeeper’s Park (which honors past,
present and future peacekeepers) draws a lot of visitors to the area
today.
The Essa Healthy Community
Committee
The Township’s Healthy Community Committee (HCC) was established in
September of 2011 with its first official meeting in January, 2012. The HCC is
comprised of 12 residents representing many community interests – agriculture,
planning, health, recreation, the environment, history and youth to name a few. Its
Vision is “Essa is a community where Town and Country live and grow together in
health, prosperity and peace built upon its natural, agricultural and historic heritage”
with a Mission to compliment this as follows:
“To protect, preserve and enhance the natural, agricultural and historic resources of Essa
by linking people and communities through involvement in the planning, promotion and
celebration of healthy and active lifestyles with a focus on the Nottawasaga River and associated
tributaries, access to local food, active transportation, safety, community revitalization, and
environmental, agricultural and community sustainability.”
In 2013 the HCC worked on a riverbank restoration project on
the Pine River to open up a canoe route with the added benefit of
optimizing aquatic habitat and improving the assimilative capacity of this
watercourse to accept phosphorus. More specifically, our team and many
local volunteers anchored coniferous trees to the Pine River riverbank,
accomplishing improved stream habitat and bank stabilization.
For 2014, the HCC will be overseeing the preparation of a Trails Master
Plan created by the Township, to link the whole of the Township, all parts
and beyond, with one another. Open Houses and a new website will be used
in the near future, as a means of collecting comments from the public and
key organizations
in the community. Be sure to watch for notices seeking out public input so that this can become a true community
project!
Angus District Lions Club Inc.
The Angus District Lions Club has been a valued and appreciated member of our community for
over 50 years! Lions Clubs International is a worldwide organization with Clubs in 190 countries and
geographical areas. We speak dozens of languages and vary in nature and customs. We share a
common spirit helping those less fortunate. We are tackling the tough problems like blindness,
diabetes awareness and finding help for the deaf, disabled and underprivileged. In fact, whatever the community needs to
make life better, lions are there to help where they can. Being a member of a Lions Club gives men and women the
opportunity to acquire new skills and work in a team setting, all while making new friends in a fun social atmosphere. As
a proud Lions Club member, you will set an example showing the value of selflessly contributing time to better their
community.
Some of the things the Angus District Lions support in
our community are;
one of the local Nursing
Homes and take a small gift
for each patient. We sponsor the Effective
Speaking contest in the local schools. We
hold a Murder Mystery Dinner night each
spring which is open to the public. In
Peacekeeper’s Park
In 2004, the Corporation of the Township of
Essa designated land bordered by Mill Street,
Brentwood Road and Commerce Road, as
Peacekeepers Park. It is a gathering place to honour
peacekeepers: past, present, and future.
The Central Ontario Chapter of the Canadian
Association of Veterans in United Nations
Peacekeeping (CAVUNP), along with the support of
The Friends of Peacekeepers Park, have helped make
this community park project possible.
In 2011, the Central Ontario Chapter of the
CAVUNP unveiled and dedicated a new sign
identifying the Park as well as a memorial wall and
gate. The memorial wall bears the names of all
Canadians killed on United Nations and
other peacekeeping
missions, and also in
Afghanistan, from 1951
to present. To make a
donation to assist in
further development
of Peacekeepers
Park contact can
be made with
Fern Taillefer (705-727-1746) or Scott Mullen
(705-424-5818).
Visit the Park to relax under the stand of pines
and see the retired United Nations personnel
carrier which
was donated by
Canadian Forces
Base Borden.
Each year
the Township
of Essa invites
everyone to the
Park on August
9th to observe
“Peacekeepers Day” – a
nationally recognized day
of remembrance since
The History of the Angus
Horticultural Society
In 1920 Angus became a Police
Village, in 1923 the Ontario Forestry
Tree Seed Plant was built, in 1926
volunteers applied to the province to form
a horticultural society. While waiting they
created the Angus Community Park across
from the Seed plant.
In 1929 the “Angus Horticultural
Society” was officially formed. Monthly
meetings were held at the Seed Plant.
Some original members have descendants
still living in Angus.
During the 1930’s the Society
fundraised to purchase connecting land
to the existing cemetery. Trees and brush
were cleared to create the “Angus Union
Cemetery” located on Vernon Street.
In 1937 members created a garden on
Curtis Street to honour the Coronation
of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth,
parents of our present Queen. A Union
Jack was raised, a dated stone laid, trees
planted and a WWI artillery gun was
placed. Over years, the gun was sold and
the stone was lost. In 2002, the original
stone was found, re-dedicated and officially
named the “Old Stone” Garden. Some
original trees are still alive at this location.
In 1938 the Society purchased land
through fundraising and donations to
build a War Memorial honouring residents
who died in WWI. The Cenotaph stands
today honouring all residents who died in
wars.
Since
2000, the following gardens were
created: Millennium Gardens, Farewell
Gardens, Clock Tower Gardens/Gazebo
and Peace Gardens at the Nottawasaga
Bridge. Eighteen Flowering Crab Apple
Trees have been planted with our “Angel”
fundraiser.
Residents can be proud of their Angus Horticultural Society. For more information, e-mail leewen@primus.ca
Camphill Communities Ont.
“Living, Learning &
Working Together
Camphill Communities Ontario
is a charitable organization providing
residential and day supports for adults
with developmental disabilities. We are
just south of Angus off Simcoe County
Road 10. Our property is a picturesque
and scenic collage of farmland and
mature forests bordering the Nottawasaga
River. Camphill provides opportunities
for people of all abilities to achieve their
potential through Living, Learning and
Working Together. Everyone contributes
to and benefits from the life of the
community.
With such a beautiful natural
resource, stewardship of the environment
is an important responsibility and we take
great care to ensure that all development
is in harmony with nature. Work on the
land, farm and gardens is an important
part of that stewardship.
Our garden produces a wide variety
of organically grown vegetables which
are sold at the Barrie Farmers Market on
Saturday mornings. We also have several
bee hives to help with fertility and plant
vitality. A herd of 22 Highland cows
graze the fields. Managed forests provide
wood for milling on the sawmill, wood
working shop, firewood and maple syrup.
Several kilometers of hiking trails weave
throughout the woods and fields across
the nearly 300 acres interspersed with
deep ravines and streams.
In addition to the work of keeping
5 households and 5 apartments in
tip top shape, there are other work
opportunities which build and cultivate
numerous integrated skills: Pottery/
Ceramic production, Wood working,
Weaving, Artistic activities, gardening,
animal husbandry, forestry, upkeep
of the landscaping, herb production
which grows and packages seasonings.
Most of the products we make are
available for sale at our regular Craft
Fairs held in the spring, fall and winter.
Our cultural centre, Novalis Hall
is a beautiful venue open to the
wider community hosting musical
performances, conferences, cultural and
social events, and plays for the public. If
you are interested in renting the hall for a
special occasion please call the office at:
Bell’s Gristmill, utopia
The only historically designated
building in Essa Township,
Utopia’s Bell’s Gristmill has
borne witness to the life of our community
and country. Originally built in 1864,
3 years before Canada was “born”, our
gristmill served an important role in our
local agriculture, turning locally grown
grain into the flour and ‘chop’ to feed the
people and livestock of Essa Township.
When closed in 1965, a sign was
placed on the building’s front face briefly
describing the gristmill’s history and ending
with the hope that a day would come when
it would be restored. Soon, with everyone’s
ever greater support, this day will be a reality.
Narrowly escaping privatization as well
as demolition, the restoration of Bell’s
Gristmill is being championed by folks
throughout the Township and beyond with
the vision of it magnificently illustrating
the history of our area as well as serving
as a means to continue to celebrate local
agriculture and community.
Spearheaded by the Friends of the
Utopia Gristmill & Park and supported by
the efforts of the Utopia Hall and the Happy
Hens of Utopia, the team offers a host of
fundraising and community activities to
secure ever-greater funds and support.
Every Saturday morning, you can
come out to the Utopia Hall to snack on
homemade bread and other delicious treats
while catching up on the happenings of
the week. A monthly breakfast feast on the
first Saturday of each month has become
a favourite for folks near and far. The
annual donation of compost from Envirem
Organics of Atlantic Canada is sold each
Spring and into the gardening months to
help cover the costs to keep the Utopia
Conservation Area, the land in which the
gristmill resides, open to all. Travelling and
local musicians perform on a regular basis…
all being mindful that their performance is
also helping to add monies to the restoration
fund. And Canada Day has taken on extra
meaning with a special concert beside the
gristmill in the Utopia Conservation Area.
And with each event and every passing
day, the road to restoration is being paved
and the vision becomes reality.
Come out and be a part of history. Your support is needed and
greatly appreciated. For more information and to get involved,
New to the Township of Essa in 2013 is the transit service
connecting Borden and Angus to the City of Barrie. This
new service comes as a result of a transit feasibility study
conducted in 2011 which gathered residents’ feedback to determine if a
transit system was needed. The bus service takes residents directly to the
Allandale GO station in Barrie. Residents will then need to
transfer to the Barrie Transit system to get
to their destination within Barrie.
If you are looking to board the bus to
take you to your destination, then keep
your eyes posted. Blue and white signs have
been strategically placed within Borden and
Angus to help identify where the bus stops
are in your area.
Buy Local...Shop Angus
On behalf of the local
business in and around
Angus, the Chamber of
Commerce continues its “Buy Local,
SHOP ANGUS” campaign. Local
stores and businesses contribute
greatly to the local economy and
health of a community.
Why shop at a locally
owned or managed
business first?
Local businesses...
• Are more likely to have local
products and services.
• Compete with friendlier
customer service &
competitive prices.
• Provide local jobs to others
& school co-op placement
opportunities.
• Contribute to local fund
raising, sports, culture, and
service clubs.
• Pay significant property taxes
which fund municipal services
such as roads & parks.
• Support other local businesses.
• Have a vested interest in the
good health of the community.
Shopping local also means fewer
miles driven in your car, using less of
your valuable time and significantly
reducing pollution.
All of the points noted above
attract growth which fosters greater
diversity, competition, and helps
Angus maintain its unique appeal.
Look for the white “Angus & Area
Chamber of Commerce” and the
blue “Buy Local SHOP ANGUS”
stickers where you shop or conduct
business.
We invite you to invest in
your community!
Angus & Area Community Guide 2014 - 33

The Door Youth Center
The Door Youth Center
in Angus is a hidden
gem located behind The
Angus Recreation Centre, just off
Mill Street. Being a close neighbour
of the new high school excites us
greatly! The location is the perfect
spot for youth ages 13-18 to get
together in a safe environment to
play pool, video games or just relax
and watch a movie. The Door is
part of Highlands Youth for Christ
which reaches out to the youth
in our communities and reveals
the way Jesus Christ taught us to
treat one another. We believe that
whatever background or troubles
young people encounter they
deserve to be treated with dignity
and respect and to experience
the unconditional
love of Christian
philosophy.
This year the
youth had fun
attending theme
parties and
games nights
at the centre. They have taken
part in volunteering for the 50th
anniversary of Giant Tiger here in
Angus and Canada Day festivities
at the Community Park. Both
events brought a lot of fun to
our community. There was face
painting, games and some of our
youth received awards for hundreds
of community service hours. There
are plenty of opportunities for fun
and fellowship for teens as well as
scheduled trips and
camping excursions.
The Door also
has a music night
once a month where
any youth can bring
an instrument or
their voice and jam
with one another.
Currently
the centre is
open Fridays
from 7 to 10pm.
We would like to
be open during
the week and on
Saturdays but
we need more
volunteers to
make it happen.
