President’s Message
For the last 5 years,
the Angus & Area
Chamber of Commerce
has been proud to bring this
incredible publication to area
residents and businesses. The
Community Guide & Business
Directory endeavours to bring
our readers valuable and
insightful information about
our area and the businesses and
services provided within. As
President, I am proud to have
the opportunity to represent our
business community. One role
of a Chamber is to support and
represent its member’s economic
growth and development within
their community. Another is
to be actively involved in the
growth and development of the
local community itself.
Annually, the Chamber and
its members are involved in a
number of local initiatives and
events which provide benefits to
our community and its residents.
Our area businesses are an
integral part of our community’s
success. Some benefits include
employment, stimulating the
local economy, impacting tax
revenue and tax dollars returned.
In conjunction with this, the
places residents shop, eat and
where they choose to have
fun at, also help communities
thrive. There are many proven
advantages to both communities
and businesses, when we choose
to shop locally.
The long term success of an
area’s businesses depends on
its diversity, collaboration and
support. Angus & Area offers all
that and more! We understand
it is not always possible to buy
everything you need locally so all
we is ask is that when it is time to
shop, you think local first!
Cindy Alarie,
The Ontario Tree Seed Plant
was established by the
Department of Lands and
Forests and has operated continuously
on its current site in Angus since 1923.
The Plant is currently operated by the
Ministry of Natural Resources with a
mandate to preserve and provide source
appropriate tree seed for reforestation
across Ontario.
The facility collects seed from about
50 different species and supplies nursery
operations, forestry companies, and the
public. It also maintains the provincial
tree seed bank of native tree species
from across the province. The Seed
Plant is especially well equipped to carry
out extraction for coniferous species as
well as cleaning and testing for all native
tree species.
With particular attention to Ontario’s
varied geo-climatic Seed Zones the Seed
Plant staff ensure an adequate supply
of genetically appropriate see for zones
across the province. With a long proud
history in the Angus community and
across the province, the Seed Plant is well
positioned for the future contributing
to Ontario’s commitment to forest
regeneration and conserving biological
diversity.
Angus & Area Community Guide 2015 - 7

The Angus Tornado...
June 17, 2014 is a date that many Angus residents
will never forget as an EF2 tornado ripped
through Angus east to the south end of Barrie
at around 5pm in the afternoon. The twister caused
at least $30 million in damage to over 100 homes and
displaced 300 residents in its path. While thankfully
there were no serious injuries or casualties, the town of
Angus and its neighbouring communities were stunned
at the wreckage that lay before them.
Many think of Angus as a small, quiet town but as
communities go, it was one that pulled together quickly
for their friends and neighbours. Only a couple of days
after the disaster, volunteers began pouring in to the
affected neighbourhoods helping with the clean-up
any way that they could. By the weekend, hundreds
of volunteers were making their way through the
neighbourhoods that needed clean-up help including
friends, family and neighbours from Angus and
surrounding communities, many having no relation to
the affected homes, they just wanted to help.
It didn’t take long for donations to come in which
included clothing, food, and hygiene items for those
who could not return to their homes and had nothing
left. The community came together in such a short
period but in such a remarkable way that many people
were able to get the help they needed.
Many businesses and volunteers also came together to
raise money for those in need. A free BBQ was set up on
June 21 and June 22 in the Mike Hart Park, the site where
the most of the devastation happened. This BBQ was
to support the workers, the firefighters, the police, the
families and the
community. They
asked friends,
companies and
local businesses
for small support
to get the supplies
they needed.
They received an
out pouring of
money, food and
water donations,
toys, toiletries, gift cards and so much more. They served
thousands of people free hamburgers, hotdogs and
beverages and received over $5000 in donations. After
which, put together a committee and chose families in
need to receive the donations.
...Bringing a Community Together
On June 22, a
second BBQ was
held from 12-4pm
with 100% of the
donations going
to the relief fund.
With the lineup
going all the way
to the back of the
parking lot, the
event was a huge success. Along with other efforts, they
totalled over $32,000 in funds.
On July 3 at the Nottawasaga Resort, a free BBQ was
held for the Angus families displaced from the tornado.
The pool was open and free to the families all day along
with burgers and hot dogs on the patio.
On September 14th a committee of volunteers
organized a benefit concert in support of the tornado
relief fund. The event, held at Brownley Meadows Park,
was originally meant to be on the 13th but the rain
changed the date to the following day. This didn’t stop
the community from coming out and enjoying a day
of music, face painting, food and fun. Over 450 people
attended to listen to the many musicians and bands that
came to play. Admission was by donation and there
was also a silent auction and BBQ, in total, $4,000 was
raised.
The same day, September 14, the Angus Tornado
Relief 5K Run/Walk was held to raise money for the
relief fund. The morning run/walk started in Brownley
Meadows Park and covered the main subdivision that
was hit in June. Many people came out and in total the
event raised roughly $2100. For more pictures of the
event visit www.thisrunsforyou.ca.
The Angus tornado affected many, although not an
easy time for many people, it was certainly made better
by the astounding people that make up the Angus and
surrounding communities. It certainly proved that
when people work together, anything is possible.
“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life
by what we give.”
The History of Angus
In the early 1800’s scattered
settlement occurred along
the road from what is now
Barrie to Collingwood, providing
travel either on foot and by horse or
wagon. A few grist-mills and sawmills
existed for the convenience of
settlers, one of which was located
on the Pine River. The land in the
neighbourhood of this mill was
purchased in 1852 by Jonas Tar Bush
as a part of a 200 acre tract of pine
land. The property when purchased
was valued at $200 but in those days
goods and chattels often entered
into a bargain. It is said that in
this case the farm actually changed
hands for $100 and a horse!
The Northern Railway, as
the C.N.R. from Toronto to
Collingwood was known in those
days, was built to Allandale (Barrie)
in 1853. In 1855 it was extended to
what is now Collingwood, following
the route which it occupies today,
passing the saw-mill on the Pine
River.
In 1857 J. Tarbush partnered
with W. Proudfoot and laid out
lots and streets in what was called
the village of “Pine River”. Later the
village was renamed Angus after
Angus Morrison, the first Member
of Parliament of Simcoe County.
Jonas Tarbush also donated land for
local churches and a school. At one
time there were 5 hotels, 5 general
stores, 2 tailors, 2 photographers, a
drug store, bake shop, and saddle
and harness shop in
this railroad village.
The community of
Angus raised $350 to
purchase land for the
Angus Community
Park (at Centre
Street & Huron
Street), which was
opened in July 1929.
The Angus Horticultural Society
was founded in June 1929, and the
Society erected the war memorial
cairn which was unveiled November
11, 1938. Angus continued to
experience growth in 2013, with
the opening of Nottawasaga Pines
Secondary School; new Essa Library
– Angus Branch; further housing
and commercial developments;
improvements to roads and bridges
such as the extension of Willoughby
Road from County Road 10 to the
5th line; as well as the addition of
parks and recreational facilities.
Peacekeepers Park
In 2004, the Corporation of the
Township of Essa designated
land bordered by Mill Street,
Brentwood Road and Commerce Road, as
Peacekeepers Park. It is a gathering place
to honour peacekeepers: past, present,
and future.
The Central Ontario Chapter of the
Canadian Association of Veterans in
United Nations Peacekeeping (CAVUNP),
along with the support of The Friends of
Peacekeepers Park, have helped make this
community park project possible.
In 2011, the Central Ontario Chapter
of the CAVUNP unveiled and dedicated
a new sign identifying the Park as
well as a memorial wall and gate. The
memorial wall bears the names of all
Canadians killed on United Nations
and other peacekeeping missions,
and also in Afghanistan, from 1951 to
present. To make a donation to assist in
further development of Peacekeepers
Park contact can be made with
Fern Taillefer (705-727-1746) or Scott
Mullen (705-424-5818).
Visit the Park to relax under the stand
of pines and see the retired United Nations
personnel carrier which was donated by
Canadian Forces Base Borden.
Each year the Township of Essa invites
everyone to the Park on August 9th to
observe “Peacekeepers Day” – a nationally
recognized day of remembrance since
2008.
Peacekeepers Park is located on Mill
Street & Brentwood Rd., Angus. For more
information on Peacekeepers Day visit
The History of the Angus
Horticultural Society
In 1920 Angus became a Police
Village, in 1923 the Ontario
Forestry Tree Seed Plant was
built, in 1926 volunteers applied to the
province to form a horticultural society.
While waiting they created the Angus
Community Park across from the Seed
plant.
In 1929 the “Angus Horticultural
Society” was officially formed. Monthly
meetings were held at the Seed
Plant. Some original members have
descendants still living in Angus.
During the 1930’s the Society
fundraised to purchase connecting land
to the existing cemetery. Trees and brush
were cleared to create the “Angus Union
Cemetery” located on Vernon Street.
In 1937 members created a garden on
Curtis Street to honour the Coronation
of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth,
parents of our present Queen. A Union
Jack was raised, a dated stone laid, trees
planted and a WWI artillery gun was
placed. Over years, the gun was sold and
the stone was lost. In 2002, the original
stone was found, re-dedicated and
officially named the “Old Stone” Garden.
Some original trees are still alive at this
location.
In 1938 the Society purchased land
through fundraising and donations
to build a War Memorial honouring
residents who died in WWI. The
Cenotaph stands today honouring all
residents who died in wars.
Since 2000, the following gardens
were created: Millennium Gardens,
Farewell Gardens, Clock Tower Gardens/
Gazebo and Peace Gardens at the
Nottawasaga Bridge. 22 Flowering Crab
Apple Trees have been planted with our
“Angel” fundraiser.
Residents can be proud of their Angus Horticultural Society. For more
information, e-mail leewen@primus.ca
Angus District
Lions Club Inc.
The Angus District Lions Club has been
a valued and appreciated member of our
community for over 50 years! Lions Clubs
International is a worldwide organization
with Clubs in 190 countries and geographical
areas. We speak dozens of languages and vary
in nature and customs. We share a common
spirit helping those less fortunate. We are
tackling the tough problems like blindness,
diabetes awareness and finding help for the deaf,
disabled and underprivileged. In fact, whatever
the community needs to make life better,
lions are there to help where they can. Being a
member of a Lions Club gives men and women
the opportunity to acquire new skills and work
in a team setting, all while making new friends
in a fun social atmosphere.
As a proud Lions Club member, you will
set an example showing the value of selflessly
contributing time to better their community.
Some of the things the Angus District Lions
support in our community are;
• Host the annual Canada Day Celebrations
in the Community Park every July 1st
• The Club raised $25,000 in only 3 years for
the Essa Library!
22 - Angus & Area Community Guide 2015
• Raise funds for various community efforts.
• Help for needy families when they
encounter difficulties.
• Assist local families with rides to Doctor
and Hospital appointments in Barrie.
• Look for us in the Winter in the Canteen at
the Angus Rec Centre.
The Angus District Lions Club also supports;
• Camp Dorset – camp for dialysis patients
and their families
• Camp Huronda – camp for children with
diabetes
• Ontario Camp for the Deaf
• Lake Joseph Centre – camp for the blind
• Lions Foundation of Canada – training
of dog guides and clients at the training
centre in Oakville, Ontario.
• Local Hospitals, Heart & Stroke
Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society and
have assisted local children with cancer.
• Vision Screening for school children.
• Girl Guides and Scouts
Utopia...
Being True to its Name
The agricultural roots of both
past and present are spreading
in leaps and bounds in the
rural hamlet of Utopia and across Essa
Township. Driven with the long term
vision of preserving and celebrating
agriculture and naturalized greenspaces
in our community, the effort that is
backing this up includes the restoration
of Bell’s Gristmill, caring for the Utopia
Conservation Area and renewing the
Utopia Community Centre (now known
as the “Utopia Hall”) as the activity hub
for “all things Utopian”.
2015 promises to be another jampacked
year of happenings.
At the Utopia Conservation Area,
Phase I of the restoration of Bell’s
Gristmill will begin this Spring, focused
on structural and exterior improvements.
The orchard, created through an Edible
Trees grant from Tree Canada, will be
entering its 2nd full season, supported
with surrounding native plants to
welcome bees and other pollinators to
both do their work and have a meal. And
a fabulous walking trail has been created,
tended through the devoted, grooming
attention of a very special volunteer who
takes great pride in creating such a special
place for all to come, walk and enjoy.
Down the road at the Utopia Hall,
there’s music in the air, thanks to the
extraordinary talents of travelling and
local musicians who stop by to share
their harmonies. Each concert comes
with lunch or dinner, offered at an
extraordinary low price that allows
access for all. And food celebrations will
become even more intense in the year
ahead with the addition of a commercial
community kitchen, supported through
Farm Credit Canada, allowing for local
food entrepreneurs to have access to
a food-creating venue to further their
work. The Utopia Hall is also the place to
be every Saturday morning from 10am –
noon when the Happy Hens of Utopia fill
your cup with freshly brewed coffee and
tea and put on a spread of home-baked
bread topped (or not) with yummy jams
& jellies and local eggs, along with the
sharing of stories of the many happenings
of near and far. Add annual events
such as SEEDY SATURDAY, the annual
Compost Sale, Canada Day celebration,
the Gristmill Run, the Sunflower Harvest
Festival, SOUPALICIOUS UTOPIA and
SANTA PAWS and your “what to do”
questions are solved.
Come out and join us as we celebrate
our life in Utopia and Essa Township;
everyone is warmly welcome.
New to the Township of Essa in 2013 is the transit service connecting Borden
and Angus to the City of Barrie. This new service comes as a result of a transit
feasibility study conducted in 2011 which gathered residents’ feedback to
determine if a transit system was needed. The bus service takes residents directly to the
Allandale GO station in Barrie. Residents will then need to transfer to the Barrie Transit
system to get to their destination within Barrie.
If you are looking to board the bus to take you to your destination, then keep your eyes
posted. Blue and white signs have been strategically placed within Borden and Angus to
help identify where the bus stops are in your area.
Bus passes are available at the Economic Development Centre located in the Angus
Recreation Centre. For more information on fares please refer to our Fee Schedule.
The transit service is something the Township of Essa wishes to grow on and expand in
the future. Please communicate any feedback you may have to assist us in improving the
transit service by contacting the Executive Assistant to the CAO and Manager of Public
Works at 705-424-9770 extension 105 or by email klinton@essatownship.on.ca.
For information on
routes and locations of
stops as well as fares
and bus passes please
visit the transit page at
Buy Local...Shop Angus
On behalf of the local
business in and around
Angus, the Chamber of
Commerce continues its “Buy Local,
SHOP ANGUS” campaign. Local
stores and businesses contribute
greatly to the local economy and
health of a community.
Why shop AT a locally
owned or managed
business first?
Local businesses...
• Are more likely to have local
products and services.
• Compete with friendlier
customer service & competitive
prices.
• Provide local jobs to others
& school co-op placement
opportunities.
• Contribute to local fund
raising, sports, culture, and
service clubs.
• Pay significant property taxes
which fund municipal services
such as roads & parks.
• Support other local businesses.
• Have a vested interest in the
good health of the community.
Shopping local also means fewer
miles driven in your car, using less of
your valuable time and significantly
reducing pollution.
All of the points noted above
attract growth which fosters greater
diversity, competition, and helps
Angus maintain its unique appeal.
Look for the white “Angus & Area
Chamber of Commerce” and the
blue “Buy Local SHOP ANGUS”
stickers where you shop or conduct
business.
We invite you to invest
in your community!
For the Greater Good...
The Angus Food Bank, The Door
& The Helping Hand
The Angus Food Bank was established in 1986 by
Salvation Army Outreach Pastor, Dana Dean. It first
opened its doors in a basement of a home and moved
to many different locations until finding its home behind the
Angus Arena, next to the NPSS.
Run by 12 volunteers, the Angus Food Bank offers assistance
to approximately 60-80 local families per month usually
including 40 or more children. Serving Angus and surrounding
areas, the Angus Food bank could not help as many families
as they do without the support of the amazing community.
Businesses, Churches, Groups and individuals are to thank for
the success of the Food Bank and their continued growth.
Donations of non-perishable food items, hygiene products,
baby food/diapers, and even dog/cat food are always welcome
along with monetary donations to be used for purchase of
perishable items. Although Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas
are crucial times for the Food Bank, donations are always
needed year-round.
The Door Youth Center in
Angus is a hidden gem
located behind The Angus
Recreation Centre, just off Mill Street.
Being a close neighbour of the new high
school excites us greatly! The location
is the perfect spot for youth ages 13-18
to get together in a safe environment
to play pool, video games or just
relax and watch a movie. The Door
is part of Highlands Youth for Christ
which reaches out to the youth in our
communities and reveals the way Jesus
Christ taught us to treat one another.
We believe that whatever background
or troubles young people encounter
they deserve to be treated with dignity
and respect and to experience the
unconditional love of Christian
philosophy.
The Door also has a music night
once a month where any youth can
bring an instrument or their voice and
jam with one another. Currently the
centre is open Fridays from 7 to 10pm.
We would like to be open during the
week and on Saturdays but we need
more volunteers to make it happen.
Anyone interested in volunteering
or for information about the centre
can contact our office and leave
a message and someone will get
back to you as soon as possible.
The Helping Hand New to You Store has been
servicing Angus and area for over 15 years.
We are a non-profit organization accepting
donations of gently used clothing and household
items.
You can find beautiful artwork, china, seasonal
items, housewares, electronics, music, movies and a
great assortment of books. Clothing and footwear are
available for the entire family including a large variety
of baby items. Watch out for bag sales, 1/2 price days,
basket draws etc.
We are run by a volunteer board and all members
who work in the store volunteer their time. Over the
last 2 years we have donated over $45,000.00 back into
the community.
and surrounding area members whom represent a wide variety of
products and services such as retail stores, professional business
services, contractors, home based businesses, community groups and
more. In addition to the Chamber’s role as an advocate for business,
we continue to bring educational and networking opportunities along
with other benefits to our members.
