The History of Angus
In the early 1800’s scattered
settlement occurred along
the road from what is now
Barrie to Collingwood, providing
travel either on foot and by horse or
wagon. A few grist-mills and sawmills
existed for the convenience of
settlers, one of which was located
on the Pine River. The land in the
neighbourhood of this mill was
purchased in 1852 by Jonas Tar Bush
as a part of a 200 acre tract of pine
land. The property when purchased
was valued at $200 but in those days
goods and chattels often entered
into a bargain. It is said that in
this case the farm actually changed
hands for $100 and a horse!
The Northern Railway, as
the C.N.R. from Toronto to
Collingwood was known in those
days, was built to Allandale (Barrie)
in 1853. In 1855 it was extended to
what is now Collingwood, following
the route which it occupies today,
passing the saw-mill on the Pine
River.
In 1857 J. Tarbush partnered
with W. Proudfoot and laid out
lots and streets in what was called
the village of “Pine River”. Later the
village was renamed Angus after
Angus Morrison, the first Member
of Parliament of Simcoe County.
Jonas Tarbush also donated land for
local churches and a school. At one
time there were 5 hotels, 5 general
stores, 2 tailors, 2 photographers, a
drug store, bake shop, and saddle
and harness shop in
this railroad village.
The community of
Angus raised $350 to
purchase land for the
Angus Community
Park (at Centre
Street & Huron
Street), which was
opened in July 1929.
The Angus Horticultural Society
was founded in June 1929, and the
Society erected the war memorial
cairn which was unveiled November
11, 1938. Angus continued to
experience growth in 2013, with
the opening of Nottawasaga Pines
Secondary School; new Essa Library
– Angus Branch; further housing
and commercial developments;
improvements to roads and bridges
such as the extension of Willoughby
Road from County Road 10 to the
5th line; as well as the addition of
parks and recreational facilities.
