The History of the Angus
Horticultural Society
In 1920 Angus became a Police
Village, in 1923 the Ontario
Forestry Tree Seed Plant was
built, in 1926 volunteers applied to the
province to form a horticultural society.
While waiting they created the Angus
Community Park across from the Seed
plant.
In 1929 the “Angus Horticultural
Society” was officially formed. Monthly
meetings were held at the Seed
Plant. Some original members have
descendants still living in Angus.
During the 1930’s the Society
fundraised to purchase connecting land
to the existing cemetery. Trees and brush
were cleared to create the “Angus Union
Cemetery” located on Vernon Street.
In 1937 members created a garden on
Curtis Street to honour the Coronation
of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth,
parents of our present Queen. A Union
Jack was raised, a dated stone laid, trees
planted and a WWI artillery gun was
placed. Over years, the gun was sold and
the stone was lost. In 2002, the original
stone was found, re-dedicated and
officially named the “Old Stone” Garden.
Some original trees are still alive at this
location.
In 1938 the Society purchased land
through fundraising and donations
to build a War Memorial honouring
residents who died in WWI. The
Cenotaph stands today honouring all
residents who died in wars.
Since 2000, the following gardens
were created: Millennium Gardens,
Farewell Gardens, Clock Tower Gardens/
Gazebo and Peace Gardens at the
Nottawasaga Bridge. 22 Flowering Crab
Apple Trees have been planted with our
“Angel” fundraiser.
Residents can be proud of their Angus Horticultural Society. For more
