Utopia...
Being True to its Name
The agricultural roots of both
past and present are spreading
in leaps and bounds in the
rural hamlet of Utopia and across Essa
Township. Driven with the long term
vision of preserving and celebrating
agriculture and naturalized greenspaces
in our community, the effort that is
backing this up includes the restoration
of Bell’s Gristmill, caring for the Utopia
Conservation Area and renewing the
Utopia Community Centre (now known
as the “Utopia Hall”) as the activity hub
for “all things Utopian”.
2015 promises to be another jampacked
year of happenings.
At the Utopia Conservation Area,
Phase I of the restoration of Bell’s
Gristmill will begin this Spring, focused
on structural and exterior improvements.
The orchard, created through an Edible
Trees grant from Tree Canada, will be
entering its 2nd full season, supported
with surrounding native plants to
welcome bees and other pollinators to
both do their work and have a meal. And
a fabulous walking trail has been created,
tended through the devoted, grooming
attention of a very special volunteer who
takes great pride in creating such a special
place for all to come, walk and enjoy.
Down the road at the Utopia Hall,
there’s music in the air, thanks to the
extraordinary talents of travelling and
local musicians who stop by to share
their harmonies. Each concert comes
with lunch or dinner, offered at an
extraordinary low price that allows
access for all. And food celebrations will
become even more intense in the year
ahead with the addition of a commercial
community kitchen, supported through
Farm Credit Canada, allowing for local
food entrepreneurs to have access to
a food-creating venue to further their
work. The Utopia Hall is also the place to
be every Saturday morning from 10am –
noon when the Happy Hens of Utopia fill
your cup with freshly brewed coffee and
tea and put on a spread of home-baked
bread topped (or not) with yummy jams
& jellies and local eggs, along with the
sharing of stories of the many happenings
of near and far. Add annual events
such as SEEDY SATURDAY, the annual
Compost Sale, Canada Day celebration,
the Gristmill Run, the Sunflower Harvest
Festival, SOUPALICIOUS UTOPIA and
SANTA PAWS and your “what to do”
questions are solved.
Come out and join us as we celebrate
our life in Utopia and Essa Township;
everyone is warmly welcome.
