The Angus Tornado...
June 17, 2014 is a date that many Angus residents
will never forget as an EF2 tornado ripped
through Angus east to the south end of Barrie
at around 5pm in the afternoon. The twister caused
at least $30 million in damage to over 100 homes and
displaced 300 residents in its path. While thankfully
there were no serious injuries or casualties, the town of
Angus and its neighbouring communities were stunned
at the wreckage that lay before them.
Many think of Angus as a small, quiet town but as
communities go, it was one that pulled together quickly
for their friends and neighbours. Only a couple of days
after the disaster, volunteers began pouring in to the
affected neighbourhoods helping with the clean-up
any way that they could. By the weekend, hundreds
of volunteers were making their way through the
neighbourhoods that needed clean-up help including
friends, family and neighbours from Angus and
surrounding communities, many having no relation to
the affected homes, they just wanted to help.
It didn’t take long for donations to come in which
included clothing, food, and hygiene items for those
who could not return to their homes and had nothing
left. The community came together in such a short
period but in such a remarkable way that many people
were able to get the help they needed.
Many businesses and volunteers also came together to
raise money for those in need. A free BBQ was set up on
June 21 and June 22 in the Mike Hart Park, the site where
the most of the devastation happened. This BBQ was
to support the workers, the firefighters, the police, the
families and the
community. They
asked friends,
companies and
local businesses
for small support
to get the supplies
they needed.
They received an
out pouring of
money, food and
water donations,
toys, toiletries, gift cards and so much more. They served
thousands of people free hamburgers, hotdogs and
beverages and received over $5000 in donations. After
which, put together a committee and chose families in
need to receive the donations.
