The History of AngusReprint of “Down, Never Out, Angus Up Again” By Peter Dunlop from Toronto Telegram Sept 1954Angus, Sept. 18 – Timber wasthe commodity responsiblefor bringing hundreds oflumbermen to this booming communityduring the mid-19th century. And whentimber went, Angus suffered its first bigsetback.By 1870, Angus, which 40 years beforehad been surrounded by a vast forest ofevergreens, and whose only inhabitantshad been Indians, was well on the way tobecoming a metropolis of Upper Canada.Altogether, at the peak of its prosperity, the village boasted five hotels, five generalstores, four blacksmith shops, a land officeand wagon and carriage shop, two tailors, two photographers, two liquor stores and afull-time physician. The turn of the century, however, sawa much different picture of the expandinglittle village. With nearby plains shorn oftheir wood, the numerous sawmills soonground to a halt. Population, which hasonce neared the 2,000 mark, dwindled toa mere 600. For a time there was not evena general store in the village.Angus has had its ups and downs.Today another wave of relative prosperityhas swept over the community. Servicemenfrom nearby Camp Borden have foundAngus an ideal location to build homes fortheir families and dozens of new housesare being built along the village outskirts.Nothing before or since can comparewith the boom experienced here duringWorld War I. Late in 1914, Camp Bordenwas established. It might be said of thatperiod that Angus was re-established.UPS AND DOWNSFrom almost a ghost town, thevillage mushroomed overnight, like asprawling northern mining community.Streets quickly became lined with stores, temporary hotels, refreshment booths andamusement places of all shapes and sizes.Even a theatre was opened. But only untilthe end of the war did business thrive. Thevillage returned to its own quiet tempo ofliving.World War II brought little change.Servicemen stationed at Camp Bordendiscovered automobiles could take themmore quickly to the bright lights ofBarrie. In 1946 it became certainthat a permanent nature would begiven to the camp and the villageagain began to boom. Today closeto 40 percent of the populationof 950 are servicemen and theirfamilies. An indication of recentexpansion can be had by thefact that a new four-roompublic school, constructedtwo years ago to replace anantiquated two-room building,is already filled to capacity and the formerschoolhouse has been reopened for classes. In recent years, The OntarioDepartment of Lands and Forests’ TreeSeed Plant, a 40-acre tract of land withinthe police village limits has helped toplace Angus “back on the map”. Seedsfrom all over Ontario are shipped here forprocessing and storing. Later when spacein the five Ontario nurseries becomesavailable, the seeds are shipped backout again, planted and later placed inreforestation areas.“When seed leaves here it goes to eitherone of our nurseries at Midhurst, Orono,St. Williams, Kemptville, or Thunder Bay,”explained Forestry Branch superintendentEdward Lewis.“The five places produce 30 to 35million trees a year and all the seed comesfrom here.”Small In Size But Not In Outlook Busy commercial and historic centre of Angus has store, first operated byfounder of the village, and post office, now run by his grandson. Cairn, at right, honors World War I dead.8 - Angus & Area Community Guide 2014

The History of AngusThe plant employs a total of 16 menand was originally responsible for ahuge reforestation project on the plainsadjoining the village where 19th centurywoodsmen had harvested indiscriminately.ONCE WAS PINE RIVERAlthough its original founder wasone Jonas Tar Bush, who purchased landon which the village now stands in 1852,Angus received its name from SimcoeCounty’s first Member of Parliament,Angus Morrison. Until then it had beenknown as Pine River.Records show the area’s fist lumbermancame looking for masts and spars for sailingvessels for His Majesty’s Royal Navy. Pinelogs 110 feet long were not uncommon andsome required 12 to 15 teams of horses tohaul them to the railway. At the same time choice trees were beingcut for masts and spars, the squared timberindustry was in full swing. Most of it wasshipped to the seaboard eitherby rail or by floating downthe St. Lawrence. Europeanmarkets consumed most ofthe harvest.Simcoe County’s firstwoman ordained minister,Rev. Florence Hunter, described by Angusresidents as “one of themost active ministers we’veever had” has been at Angus’ Wesley UnitedChurch here since early July. Only otherchurch in the village is Zion Presbyterian,at which Rev. Karam Guergis is minister. Each year, Angus’ Horticultural Societysponsors vegetables, flower and bird-housebuilding competition for village children. It is also responsible for the annual springcemetery cleanup and maintaining a cairnto World War I veterans.Wonderful WoodlandsMajestically flanked by rows of talltrees, a bus and a truck are about toenter Camp Borden, just outside ofAngus. Trees like these provided anearly boom; irresponsible lumberingturned Angus into a ghost town. Nowthe forests grow again, a good omen, and a tree seed plant helps Angus tokeep on the map.HOTEL fire Dominion House Hotel was destroyed by fire 1939.Near BarrieJust 67 milesaway• The government ordered the survey of Sunnidale Road from Barrie in1830. For the next 20 years settlement was very slow.• A sawmill began to operate near where Angus now stands. Jonas TarBush purchased land around the sawmill. This land was part of a tractof solid pine, red and white.• The Northwestern Railway had just been completed to Collingwoodin 1855. The route passed a sawmill and a village sprung up and wasnamed Pine River Village.• Jonas Tar Bush and W.M. Proudfoot formed a partnership and in1857 laid out a plan for the town of “Pine River”. Later they renamedit Angus after Angus Morrison, the first MP of Simcoe County.Angus History at-a-glance•Angus was a shipping centre for lumber produced in the local mills.Railways yard was enlarged.• At one time, Angus had 17 sawmills and a population of 2,000.• In 1914, Camp Borden became a training centre and, since Angus wasso close, became alive again.• Today Angus continues to grow in population and thrive withschools, parks, businesses, recreational clubs and facilities and manycommunities. Places such as Peacekeeper’s Park (which honors past, present and future peacekeepers) draws a lot of visitors to the areatoday.Angus & Area Community Guide 2014 - 9

Bell’s Gristmill, utopiaThe only historically designatedbuilding in Essa Township,Utopia’s Bell’s Gristmill hasborne witness to the life of our communityand country. Originally built in 1864,3 years before Canada was “born”, ourgristmill served an important role in ourlocal agriculture, turning locally growngrain into the flour and ‘chop’ to feed thepeople and livestock of Essa Township. When closed in 1965, a sign wasplaced on the building’s front face brieflydescribing the gristmill’s history and endingwith the hope that a day would come whenit would be restored. Soon, with everyone’sever greater support, this day will be a reality.Narrowly escaping privatization as wellas demolition, the restoration of Bell’sGristmill is being championed by folksthroughout the Township and beyond withthe vision of it magnificently illustratingthe history of our area as well as servingas a means to continue to celebrate localagriculture and community.Spearheaded by the Friends of theUtopia Gristmill & Park and supported bythe efforts of the Utopia Hall and the HappyHens of Utopia, the team offers a host offundraising and community activities tosecure ever-greater funds and support.Every Saturday morning, you cancome out to the Utopia Hall to snack onhomemade bread and other delicious treatswhile catching up on the happenings ofthe week. A monthly breakfast feast on thefirst Saturday of each month has becomea favourite for folks near and far. Theannual donation of compost from EnviremOrganics of Atlantic Canada is sold eachSpring and into the gardening months tohelp cover the costs to keep the UtopiaConservation Area, the land in which thegristmill resides, open to all. Travelling andlocal musicians perform on a regular basis…all being mindful that their performance isalso helping to add monies to the restorationfund. And Canada Day has taken on extrameaning with a special concert beside thegristmill in the Utopia Conservation Area. And with each event and every passingday, the road to restoration is being pavedand the vision becomes reality.Come out and be a part of history. Your support is needed andgreatly appreciated. For more information and to get involved, visit www.utopia.on.ca24 - Angus & Area Community Guide 2014
