Tailored Industry Publications Choosing a profitable course – European tonnage tax regimes for the shipping industry All tonnage tax regimes in Europe are based on the same principle – tax payable is based on the registered tonnage of vessels, multiplied by a fixed amount of deemed profit per ton, instead of the actual accounting profits. To facilitate shipping companies in making their choice for the optimal regime, PricewaterhouseCoopers compared the European tonnage tax systems for the shipping industry. This report gives you a detailed description of the differences between them and calculation examples, as well as an outline of the background of the tonnage tax regimes. Tax Risk Management Guide This guide outlines firstly the issues that need to be discussed when a company is deciding on its policy and addressing its approach to tax risk management, secondly a framework for managing the risks and finally some specific tools and techniques that can be used in doing so. The guide addresses the need for key stakeholders to be comfortable that there is a tax risk management policy in their organisation, that tax, as one of the key costs in the business is being properly managed and that the inherent risks in the tax position of the organisation are being both understood and properly controlled. Opportunities & Challenges in the Shipping Industry The PricewaterhouseCoopers tax shipping network is finalising the next version of its leaflet ‘Opportunities and challenges for the shipping network’. The leaflet includes an overview of tonnage tax regimes and other tax systems applicable to shipping companies in 19 countries. The summary covers all key shipping nations in Europe as well as some of the key shipping countries outside Europe such as mainland China, Hong Kong and Singapore.
