Port Ludlow Voice Page 3 Feature Articles From the Editor’s Keyboard by Beverly Browne, Managing Editor As inclement winter weather recedes and sunny days become more frequent, thoughts turn to possibilities. At this happy time, we are particularly pleased to announce that secret negotiations between the LMC and the SBCA took place this last month. The result was the beginning of a plan to extend joint membership to residents, putting an end to the despised non-member fee, simplifying the rental policies and moving us toward one Port Ludlow. According to Manager Brian Belmont, details are yet to be finalized. This editor commends the groups on their fine work. With booming condominium pre-sales, Port Ludlow Associates (PLA) plans for the Marina development have taken a quantum leap forward. Construction will begin in spring. The development includes a new and expanded Marina Store, an informal restaurant (replacing the Harbormaster), a boardwalk and a new Yacht Club facility. Construction of office space and remodel of the existing Conference Center will commence later in the year. In a surprise announcement, the Village Market will undergo remodel and expansion to provide space for fresh produce and bulk food. The emphasis in the market will be on local, organic food products. The Garden Club will participate in the beautification of the center by replanting the flower beds and attending to hanging baskets. Planned additional retail includes a pharmacy and a sportswear/gift shop. Negotiations are taking place regarding a time share near the present Kitsap Bank. An adjacent park area will encircle the current native plant garden to encourage visitor strolls to Ludlow Falls and provide play/picnic space. The Festival by the Bay has signed Taylor Swift as their lead act this July. Dinner cruises on the Bay are planned; sign up early as they are expected to be popular. Artech of Seattle will complete the conservation and preservation of the Totem Pole in time for a dedication during Port Ludlow’s Festival 2013. The Inn At Port Ludlow has already begun planning the menu which will include planked salmon and compote of wild berries, lovingly gathered by PLA staff. Representatives of the Suquamish tribe will attend, paddling in by canoe for the ceremony. The happy news is that, whatever the rest of the world is doing, the state of the Village is healthy and the prospects are glowing. Now I should shout “April Fool” but some of this might come to be. About the Cover Photographers The cover photograph this month was taken by Homer Evans, a resident of Tala Shore. His wife Peggy and he enjoy gardening, so lots of quality time is spent maintaining over 150 rhododendrons and hundreds of other plants, shrubs and trees. Over 90 percent of the plants were propagated by Homer in the last 12 years. Many of the plant cuttings were offered by the neighbors, and now have a new home in Homer and Peggy’s yard. A favorite area of their yard is a Zen garden, with raked patterns and a bench to sit and meditate. Helen Weismeyer, native of Southern California, enjoyed a teaching career in the field of Physical Education, Health and Exercise Science. She discovered the Northwest and moved to Port Ludlow in 2004, along with long-time (from high school) friend Mary Small. Helen’s interests include bicycling, travel (foreign and domestic), working in the yard, and photography. She is active in the Port Townsend Photo Club, and has won some prizes at the Jefferson County Fair, had travel pictures published in the Seattle Times and USA Today, and shown some work at the Bishop Hotel First Saturday Art Walks. Mostly she enjoys photographing their cat Tiger, and designing calendars with his permission. Skagit Valley Has 30th Tulip Festival by Eline Lybarger, Contributing Writer You know it is spring when the tulips bloom, and Mt. Vernon is the place to celebrate blooming tulips for the whole month of April. In addition to 350 acres of blooms, there are many events, mostly on the weekends. The largest crowds are then, too.
