NEWSLETTER
FRIDAY 21 st MAY 2010
Dear Parents,
SCHOOL CLOSURE
Please be reminded that there is no school for pupils on Monday, 24 th May.
WELCOME TO WILLIAM WORDSWORTH
We welcome Rian Baker. We hope he enjoys his time in William Wordsworth.
Y3 MOHNESEE VISIT
Our Y3s arrived back safely from their annual Mohnesee Visit. They all had a wonderful week, and they have lots of
stories to tell. On behalf of all the children I thank Mrs Thompson, Mrs Bernal, Mr Cunningham, and Mr & Mrs Ashton
for all their hard work, enthusiasm and commitment to making this once again a superb and memorable event for all the
children. May I also say thank you to all the boys and girls. All the staff have commented on their wonderful behaviour,
ability to play and work together so well and enjoy being in each other’s company. They should be very proud of
themselves; and you as parents must be delighted to hear of such great accolades.
POLITE REMINDER
I have reminded all the staff that they are not to discuss pupil’s behaviour / progress in public areas. As you know, we
have Open House on a Wednesday between 2.45 and 3.15 when you are able to drop in to speak with your child’s
teacher, without making an appointment. However, if you have a concern or query that cannot wait until then call into
the office where you can speak with me or leave a message for the teacher to call you. Confidentiality is extremely
important, so it is essential that all discussions are held within the school building. 8.25 is also a difficult time as the
class teacher is busy with all the children. As I say, if you have concerns let me know or ask the teacher to call if they
are not available to speak with you there and then. Thank you for your support with this matter.
MUSIC AT LUNCHTIMES
Last week saw the introduction of this new activity at lunchtime, and I have to say that the youngest children have
particularly enjoyed dancing to favourite songs. The children can bring in their own suitable CDs. However, it is at
their own risk. We will not be responsible for loss or damage to any CD. I thank you for your understanding regarding
this.
SSAFA 125 YEAR ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS
As part of the 125 anniversary celebrations the local SSAFA branch are to hold charity ‘cake days’ for children. They
ask that you bake a cake, get your child to bring it in to school and we will sell it back to the children for 25 cents. All
monies raised will be given to SSAFA. On 18 th June William Wordsworth will have their ‘cake day’. If the children
bring in an item, it will then be cut up and sold to the other children at break-time. Our Y4s will assist with this fund
raising activity.
SUITABLE FOOTWEAR
As the weather improves the children are beginning to come to school in summer uniform. However, may I remind you
that trainers are not part of our school uniform. I have seen a number of children beginning to wear these on a daily
basis to school. Thank you for your support with this matter.
TIMETABLES / OVERVIEWS
There were a number of computer glitches last week. Therefore your child will bring home their Timetable & Termly
overview in their bag tonight. We will endeavour to sort this out for the next time we send them home! It had all to do
with scanning / pdf etc. All rather technical!
ATTENDANCE
As you know I have to monitor attendance. Last year the annual attendance figure was 92.83%. Each year the
headteacher and SCE have to set a target for attendance; this is common practice in UK. Therefore, the target for
William Wordsworth School is 94%.
Autumn 09 average was: 94.35% attendance 5.21% authorised absence 0.44% unauthorised absence
Spring 10 average was: 93.33% attendance 6.11% authorised absence 0.56% unauthorised absence
Average for 0910: 93.86% attendance 5.66% authorised absence 0.48% unauthorised absence
(Sept – April)
We need to try to hit the 94%, so I will be monitoring requests for leave carefully. I also have to report to the garrison
and SGC our figures for each term. There was a query at the last SGC meeting about the high percentage of authorised
absences.
Week by week overview
19 th April – 23 rd April 93.52% 26 th April – 30 th April 94.77% well done
3 rd May – 7 th May 95.26% super 10 th May – 14 th May 95.03% super again
FRUITY FRIDAYS & THE FRUIT & VEGETABLE SCHEME
Every Friday the children have a small sampler of a fruit (each week will be different) and will be in addition to the FS2
and KS1 (Y1 & 2) Fruit and Vegetable Scheme. We also place a basket of fruit in the KS2 (Y3 & 4) open area for them
to pick a piece as they go out to break. The Fruit & Vegetable Scheme is an SCE initiative and paid for by the
authority.
Fruity Friday is supported by NAAFI as they are providing the fruit free of charge, and preparing it in the kitchen for
us. This is greatly appreciated.
Today it was Strawberries and the next few weeks are as follows:
