But going around with a guide book in your<br />
hand and trying to grasp what you are seeing at the same<br />
time isn’t perfect. Neither is viewing what everyone else is<br />
already heading for.<br />
Detour lets you experience cities in a different way. It<br />
gives you audio-guided walks for three US cities – Austin,<br />
New York and San Francisco – as well as four from Europe<br />
(Barcelona, Berlin, London and Paris) and one from Africa<br />
(Marrakesh). Of those, San Fran is the most fleshed out but<br />
as time goes on, we expect more content for the others too.<br />
When you select a city, you are able to choose a<br />
particular area or a certain interest that takes you off the<br />
beaten track. For example, there is a walk around San<br />
Francisco’s Golden Gate Park that is slanted towards the<br />
enjoyment of the plants. In London, you can discover a<br />
1,000-year-old revolution in Clerkenwell and in Paris, you<br />
can explore the city’s illegal underbelly. As you walk along,<br />
you can take photos or share your location and experience.<br />
You have to purchase each guide individually so it<br />
could get expensive if you want to engage in multiple<br />
trips but each one works the same and there is an annual<br />
subscription option available. The guides last an hour and<br />
they let you navigate at your own pace. If you are with<br />
friends, then you can sync the guides. The audio will then<br />
helpfully tell you where to turn and what to look at.<br />
The developers promise new content each month so<br />
return visits to a city can become varied. You can also listen<br />
to a preview in high-quality audio of each walk. And as<br />
they’reproducedbyradioproducers,localjournalists,artists<br />
andtourguides–theyareauthoritativeandknowledgable.<br />
We love the idea and the quality – we’ll never idly stare<br />
atbuildingsinwonderagain.<br />
