Our Jewish Community Center
Another chapter in the story of us
Over the years one of the most important
things I have learned about our Jewish
community is that we are a people
of stories. Stories give us flavor and
perpetuate who we are. We pass our stories
down from generation to generation.
This past June at our
Annual Meeting & Gala we
inducted three men into our
Hall of Fame who are keepers
of our Syracuse Jewish stories.
Some might call them our
local historians but I believe
that a better way to describe
them is our local storytellers.
George Wladis, Hecky Alpert
and Michael Moss regaled
attendees with stories of their
youth and of a Syracuse and JCC of the
past. What was most beautiful about the
afternoon was how every person in the
room was touched in some way by their
tales and anecdotes. George, Hecky and
Mike have been invaluable in helping me
to understand the history of our JCC.
What was equally fitting this afternoon
was that we recognized a group of young
adults with our Kovod Award who are
just beginning their own Jewish stories.
Many thanks to the Jewish Community
Foundation of CNY who had the foresight
to establish the Teen Funders, a group of
Bar and Bat Mitzvah young people who
contribute a percentage of their Bar and
Bat Mitzvah money for tzedakah. Together
these young philanthropists decide what
charities will receive funding and then
donate to many worthy organizations.
They are beginning their own Jewish story
of giving and service to their community.
At our Gala the JCC also recognized
two individuals with our Kovod Gadol
Award or highest honor. This award is
given to individuals who have gone above
and beyond, dedicating themselves in an
extraordinary way to the JCC over many
years. This year’s recipients were Nancy
Kasow, executive assistant at the JCC
for over 33 years, and Debbie Goldwein
who has been an amazing JCC board
member and volunteer for many years.
Marci Erlebacher
Executive Director
Both of these individuals have dedicated
themselves to be a part of our Jewish
Community Center’s story.
This wonderful afternoon of our
successful gala, which was attended by
over 215 individuals, has now gone into
the year 2014–2015 chapter
of our JCC story. And what a
success it was. Thanks to the
generosity of our community
and the wonderful support
and hard work of our board of
directors, this event surpassed
our budgeted goal by $10,000.
Because of our success with
this event and that of our two
other fundraisers (end-of-year
campaign and Super Bowl
raffle), hundreds of individuals will be able
to reap the benefits of the many programs
and services that the Jewish Community
Center has to offer. We will once again
meet the demands of many camp and early
childhood program scholarship requests,
our senior meal program will be able to
feed seniors nutritious kosher meals five
days a week, and we will be able to meet
the needs of our community and the
building that we call home.
Our story would come to an abrupt
end if we did not have the support of
our fellow Jewish organizations and our
congregations. Thank you for recognizing
the JCC as the hub of this community.
We truly appreciate you for being such an
important part of our story.
Now that this chapter in our tale is
closed, we have already embarked on a
new chapter: 2015–2016. We are excited
for what this year has in store for us. We
are also proud of the wonderful programs
that we will present to you this year as well
as every one of our departments that are
beginning the year stronger than ever. We
invite you to be an invaluable part of our
story this year. Come to our events, take
part in our programs and above all else
become a member if for no other reason
then to help us perpetuate the JCC story. I
encourage you to get involved. Become a
part of our rich heritage and help us write
this next exciting chapter.
Supporting Your Center
315-445-2360 | www.jccsyr.org
Your continued financial
contributions, gifts, grants and
endowments allow us to serve
you, your family and the larger
community six days per week,
year round. Funds raised are
critical to daily operations, special
programming, future development
and improvements, and
scholarships and financial aid.
End-of-Year Donation
Public support is imperative to the JCC of
Syracuse’s survival. The center depends on
these donations for a full 7% of its annual
budget. Information about making a taxdeductible,
end-of-year contribution will
be sent out in late fall.
Matching Gifts
Many companies in the Syracuse area have
Matching Gift Programs, which encourage
charitable giving by their employees.
Under these programs, companies match
gifts—often dollar for dollar or even two
dollars to one—that individuals make to
nonprofit, tax-exempt organizations. Your
gift to the JCC may qualify. Please check
with your company to determine eligibility
requirements.
Tribute Cards
To commemorate special occasions,
including births, birthdays, graduations,
anniversaries, marriages, Bar or Bat
Mitzvah, or to celebrate and honor
the memory of a loved one, the JCC
welcomes tax-deductible gifts to one of
our many endowment or special funds.
(See the tributes on page 33.) The JCC
will send an acknowledgement card to
the individual (or next of kin) in whose
name the contribution is made. Tribute
cards recognize someone special and help
the JCC. For more information, contact
Mariette DeWolf at 315-445-2040, ext. 112.
Volunteer
An agency such as the JCC is dependent
on the enthusiasm and willingness of
members of the community who volunteer
their time and talent. Volunteers are
invaluable in bringing vital perspective,
experience, community and manpower to
complement those of our staff members.
Helping others
Senior Adult Dining Program
Our Bobbi Epstein Lewis Senior Adult
Dining Program (see page 22) offers
seniors a hot, nutritious kosher meal
five days a week at a very affordable
price. It’s our way of “giving back” to
local seniors who form the foundation
of our community. You can help
keep this valuable program going by
making a contribution or becoming a
sponsor of our monthly senior newsletter.
Jewish Federation of CNY
The JCC of Syracuse is a beneficiary
agency of the Jewish Federation of
Central New York. The JCC receives
funding from the Federation and
works in close partnership with it to
provide the Jewish community with
essential programs and services.
Strong show of support for JCC’s Annual Meeting & Gala
Amid a vibrant backdrop of purple and
green French country décor accents,
the Sam Pomeranz Jewish Community
Center of Syracuse welcomed a packed
house of supporters for its 152nd Annual
Meeting & Gala on Sunday, June 7, at
Owera Vineyards in Cazenovia. Over
215 people came out to celebrate with the
JCC as it honored a select group of local
men and women for their many years of
selfless giving to the center and to the local
community.
“The show of support for this year’s
honorees was outstanding,” said JCC
of Syracuse Executive Director Marci
Erlebacher. “The service that our award
recipients have
provided is truly
remarkable. We
can all learn a
lot from their
unselfish acts, and
we are all better
off because of
their kindness.”
A total of
six awards were
presented this
year. All of the honorees
received a plaque and
will have their names
displayed at the JCC for
their respective awards.
The first award
given, the Kovod Award,
which signifies honor
and importance, was
presented to the Teen
Funders of the Jewish
Community Foundation
of Central New York. This
generous group of local
teens gave a portion of their b’nai mitzvah
money to be used for making grants twice
a year to both Jewish and non-Jewish local,
national and international nonprofits.
Next up was the JCC’s Hall of Fame
Award presented to Herbert (Hecky)
Alpert, Michael Moss and George Wladis.
This award recognizes and celebrates
individuals who have dedicated themselves
to the Syracuse Jewish community and
to the advancement of the JCC. These
honorees are a testament to a Sir Marvin
served on numerous committees.
Moss, a historian, provided significant
historical accounts for the film “Stories
from the Syracuse Jewish Community.”
He was president of Bern Furniture stores,
has been an active member of Temple
Concord in Syracuse and has also served
on numerous local boards.
A philanthropist, long-time supporter
of the JCC and founder of The Wladis
Companies insurance brokerage, Wladis
attended JCC summer day camp in
Thorndon Park as a child. Seventeen
years ago he donated 500 pairs of winter
hats and gloves to an elementary school’s
students and in doing so started the annual
City of Syracuse Schools’ hats and gloves
drive. Wladis has also served on the boards
of the Jewish Federation of CNY, Syracuse
Symphony and Syracuse City Schools
Education Foundation.
Rounding out the awards ceremony
was the Kovod Gadol Award presented to
Debbie Goldwein and Nancy Kasow. This
Another successful summer camp season concludes
The JCC of Syracuse has once again
wrapped up another successful Camp
Rishon summer day camp. Hundreds of
campers ranging in age from infants to
school-age children to teens descended
upon the JCC campus during the eight
weeks of camp which ran June 29 – Aug. 21.
“This year’s camp was a huge success
all around,” said Mick Hagan, director of
Children and Teen Services. “We had a
great group of children join us this year
that was full of enthusiasm and adventure.
Kudos to our camp counselors for filling
each day with fun and excitement, and
creating some great memories for our
campers.”
From arts and crafts, swimming and
sports to field trips and more, there wasn’t
a dull moment during the JCC’s Nitzanim,
or traditional, school-age day camp. The
children were kept engaged and interacting
with each other during the many planned
indoor and outdoor activities.
For the many school-age children who
participated in a JCC specialty camp such
as soccer, gymnastics, horseback riding
and fishing, they were able to focus on
activities in their specific areas of interest.
Once again this year young teens
entering grades 7–10 in the JCC’s
SyraCruisin’ Teen Travel Camp got to
take in a variety of adventurous local
and regional road trips. Overnights to
Highland Forest, Rochester, Old Forge and
Buffalo provided many opportunities for
fun and bonding.
“There’s nothing like summer camp at
the JCC because it’s all about the children,”
said Hagan. “We go the extra mile to
make each camp a fun, safe and wonderful
experience. In doing so, we help to create
great memories that will last a lifetime.”
A simple approach yields weight loss success
Getting healthier and losing weight
doesn’t require some elaborate workout
routine or complicated plan. Just ask JCC
fitness member Phyllis Siersma. She lost
27 pounds and dropped two pant sizes in
one year thanks to a simple and sensible
exercise and diet plan.
Siersma joined the
JCC in April 2014 at the
recommendation of a
friend. She was motivated
to exercise because of her
family’s history of heart
disease. “I wanted to get
in shape,” she said. “I ate
too much and I had never
exercised before. Now I eat
well and fell much better.”
A combination of
regular exercise and portion
control has been the ticket
to Siersma’s weight loss.
She exercises three times a
week at the JCC. Her 40-minute workouts
consist of 25 minutes on the treadmill and
15 minutes of weight training. Siersma
says that watching television while on the
treadmill makes the time go by faster. She
also enjoys attending the group exercise
chair class on Monday mornings.
If you haven’t been to the gym in awhile
or want to get started on exercising and
losing weight, take a cue
Deeds and seeds
By Rabbi Evan Shore
As we approach the High Holy Days, we
have a unique opportunity to begin anew,
turn a page and start afresh. I am not hinting
that we turn back the clock of time, rather
learn from our mistakes, utilize what we have
learned and put the sum of our experience
to good use.
Many Jews suffer, for lack of a better term,
from guilt. Why are so many Jews guiltridden?
Several are afraid they have not
done enough in terms of performance of the
commandments enumerated in the Torah.
As a result, a person mistakenly may think,
if I am not doing all the commandments, I
am not carrying out any of them. This in
my opinion is a very defeatist attitude. Isn’t
something better than nothing?
One of the myriad of customs Jews partake
in on Rosh Hashanah is eating a pomegranate
(rimon in Hebrew). Our Rabbis tell us the
fruit of the pomegranate is filled with many
seeds; each one symbolizes a commandment
from the Torah. I am sure there are many
fruits that contain numerous seeds, so why
was the pomegranate singled out? Each
seed in the pomegranate is encased by the
fruit itself. Not many fruits possess this
characteristic.
However, the message is clear, just like
each seed is independent from each other
so too with our commandments. Each
commandment contains its own identity and
is not diminished by omitting another. We
may employ the same logic with our children.
As parents we always want them to do more
and achieve beyond. We must never forget
that every positive action a child performs is
a unit unto itself and should be commended.
As we begin the New Year 5776, let us
build upon our actions from previous years,
and please G-d let this year let our positive
actions be as numerous as the seeds in a
pomegranate!
Kasow, former JCC executive assistant
and office manager, retired in January
after more than 33 years of dedicated
service. She essentially held the same
position during her entire tenure,
although increasingly took on additional
responsibilities throughout her career.
Because of Kasow’s vast JCC knowledge
and experience, she was often relied upon
as the office’s unofficial resident historian.
The JCC’s Annual Meeting & Gala is
the center’s largest and most important
annual fundraiser. This year’s event
proceeds, as in the past, will provide
significant funding for scholarships to
individuals in the JCC’s early childhood,
after school, summer camp and senior
programs.
“On behalf of the Sam Pomeranz JCC
board of directors, we thank everyone who
attended and supported our gala this year,”
said JCC Board President Steven Sisskind.
“The wonderful generosity of our sponsors
and attendees clearly demonstrates what a
valuable resource the JCC is for so many in
our community.”
HOW to REGISTER
Registration for the 2015-2016 school year
has been ongoing, and space is typically
very limited. Each new school year requires
registration. When a class is filled, based on
New York State licensing requirements, a
wait list is developed. Once the school year
begins, children are admitted from the wait
list on a space-available basis.
There is a $25 reservation fee to be placed
on one of our wait lists. This does not
guarantee placement in a classroom. We will
notify you if a placement becomes available,
and you will have 48 hours to accept the
placement. For more information, please call
us at 315-445-2040, ext. 120.
Infant Level
We offer the highest quality of care to our
youngest members in the Syracuse area. To
maintain a developmentally appropriate
environment for our infants, they are
separated into two age groups: Infant I
and Infant II. Infants who are 6 weeks to
12 months old at time of enrollment are
placed in the Infant I classroom. Infants
who are 12 months to 24 months at the
time of enrollment are placed in the
Infant II classroom.
The ECDP provides a responsive
environment that supports and encourages
exploration through a variety of classroom
routines and experiences. Infant caregivers
focus on daily routines such as hellos and
goodbyes, diapering and toileting, feeding,
dressing and soothing to sleep as part of
the curriculum. These one-on-one routines
help to build positive relationships between
infant and caregiver, promoting trust and
allowing infants to feel secure in their
environment.
Once infants have developed a
trusting relationship with their caregivers
they will start to gain new skills and
participate more actively in daily routines.
The teachers are then able to provide
intentional indoor and outdoor experiences
that allow children to learn while imitating
and pretending, connecting with music
and movement, exploring with sand and
water and creating with art.
Toddler Level
• Must be 18-months old by September 8, 2015
Toddler children are at an age when they
establish secure attachments with their
caregivers more quickly and are now eager
to experience their world. They react to
what they experience through their senses
and physical activity. ECDP teachers
provide intentional experiences for
toddlers through a variety of indoor and
outdoor experiences.
Learning materials that match the
children’s growing abilities and interests
are provided and the children start to
explore objects and begin to use them
purposefully. While playing with toys,
imitating and pretending, exploring
sand and water, creating with art and
going outdoors, the toddlers learn to
communicate and socialize with peers and
adults, to think mathematically and to
discover like scientists.
Toddlers start to enjoy special
programming outside of the classroom
setting, such as Toddler Tango and gym
class. Toddlers are placed into classrooms
according to their chronological age.
Children do not need to be toilet trained,
and when appropriate, toilet training will
be incorporated into one of the goals for
your child.
Three-Year Old Level
• Must be age 3 by December 1, 2015
With kindergarten just two years away,
this is an important time for every child
to learn that the world is bigger than
imagined. Children learn new skills
and concepts through our thematic,
hands-on approach to learning. Daily
activities are carefully planned to promote
children’s social, emotional and cognitive
development. Our teachers are trained to
recognize differences in rates
of development within this
age group, and individualize
instruction to meet every
child’s needs. Materials and
activities are appropriately
tailored in an effort to
challenge children’s abilities
while building their selfconfidence.
Throughout the year, children will
discover the wonder of the world they live
in. All of our three-year olds are actively
engaged in group discussions, long-term
studies, sensory play, cooking, process art
and more. Our three-year olds are reading
stories, singing songs and playing their way
through the day. We also tailor gym time
with our specialized gym instructor to
the needs of our three-year olds. We play
outside every day, weather permitting, on
our beautiful fenced-in playgrounds.
With all of these wonderful
activities happening in our three-year
old classrooms, the Early Childhood
Development Program provides a well
rounded and positive learning experience
for your child.
Pre-K Level
• Must be age 4 by December 1, 2015
Our oldest children explore the world
through our hands-on, developmentally
appropriate approach to learning. We
include both child initiated play and
teacher-directed academic experiences on
a daily basis. Planned lessons
and activities allow teachers
to informally and continually
assess each child in order
to effectively modify and
individualize instruction.
Academically, we focus
on exposing children to the
skills and concepts needed
to succeed in kindergarten.
This includes creative expression, math
and reading readiness, along with fine
and gross motor skill development to help
each child learn, grow and succeed. Each
classroom is also equipped with a SMART
board where the children are engaged in
daily interactive lessons which promote
creativity and critical thinking.
Children at the Pre-K level attend
many theme-related field trips. In the
fall our classes will visit the apple and
pumpkin farms. Later in the school year
we’ll visit the MOST, F-M Planetarium and
Fayetteville Free Library.
PJ Library in CNY – A Jewish community partnership
A gift for Jewish children and their families
PJ Library (PJ for pajamas) is a nationally
acclaimed literacy program started by
the Harold Grinspoon Foundation that
gives free Jewish bedtime stories, CDs and
DVDs to families raising Jewish children.
In addition to this wonderful free gift for
Jewish children and their families, the PJ
Library in CNY chapter regularly holds
special PJ family playdates and events.
These playdates are designed to connect
children and parents to the PJ Library
program through different holiday, book
and Jewish themed events. At these
gatherings families can learn more about
PJ library’s special programs and sign up
for this free service.
The PJ Library CNY chapter is a
program of the JCC of Syracuse and
supported by the Pomeranz, Shankman
and Martin Charitable Foundation, Jewish
Federation of Central New York, Jewish
Introducing PJ Our Way
Attention 9–11 year olds! We are pleased
to announce that Syracuse/CNY has
been selected to be one of the next pilot
communities for PJ Our Way, the newest
chapter of PJ Library for kids ages 9–11.
PJ Our Way is different than PJ Library
in that it is designed to meet the
developmental needs of 9–11 year olds by
offering
choice and
creative
outlets.
Every month kids visit the PJ Our Way
website to choose one book from a
selection of four high-quality titles with
Jewish themes. The books are mailed to
the kids’ homes and they can then post
comments and reviews on the website.
All 9–11 year olds living in the Syracuse/CNY
community will be eligible to sign up for PJ
Our Way. Children may register beginning
on their 9th birthday until the day before
their 12th birthday. Subscriptions remain
active for at least one year. Each child,
including siblings, must enroll separately.
Enrollment for eligible children in PJ
Local attorney and
choreographer Barry
again lead the classes.
Shulman, who has
held the tap classes
the past several years
at the JCC, teaches
“New York City”
style. Students do not
need to commit to
every class and can
attend as much as
they’d like.
“If you’ve ever wanted to try tap
dancing, these classes are a great way for
both men and women to ‘dive in’ and
experience something new,” says Joe Yager,
JCC sports and fitness director. “Barry
does a great job of getting both newcomers
and experienced dancers alike moving and
having fun each night.”
Shulman, who is of counsel to the
law firm Gilberti, Stinziano, Heintz and
Smith, has taught many principal dancers
on Broadway and with national tours.
He keeps the cost of the tap classes to a
minimum and donates the proceeds to the
JCC of Syracuse. Shulman received the
JCC’s Kovod Gadol award in 2013 for his
extraordinary commitment, energy and
loyalty to the JCC.
MIND
AND
BODY
Barre
A combination of ballet techniques
with Pilates movements and
principles offers an energizing
workout that strengthens, stretches
and tones the body.
NIA (Neuromuscular Integrative Action)
NIA is a blend of concepts, cultures, theories and
movement from the east and west. It is a barefoot
technique offering a fusion of movement styles.
Experience the expressiveness of dance, the power of
martial arts and the wisdom of the healing arts.
Pilates
Based on the principles of Joseph Pilates, this class’
multiple levels of participation uses bands, magic
circles, stability balls and BOSUs. Mostly done on a
mat, but some standing work is incorporated as well.
Restorative Yoga
Hatha Yoga based exercises include gentle stretching,
breathing techniques and balance postures. The
class focuses on strengthening of body and posture
alignment. The many benefits include relaxation and an
improved sense of well being. Come enjoy.
Tai Chi for Arthritis
Tai Chi is an ancient practice proven to improve mental
and physical well being. Tai Chi for Arthritis uses gentle
Sun-style Tai Chi movements to help reduce stress,
improve breathing and develop balance, mobility and
body awareness. All ability levels are welcome and you
don’t need to be diagnosed with arthritis to participate.
Yoga
A hybrid style drawing from Vinyasa, Lyengar and
Viniyoga that brings physical benefits by integrating
body and mind performance. Bring a towel, water and
we recommend that you bring your own Yoga mat.
Yogalates
This class is a fusion of Yoga and Pilates. See each
description above for further details.
ALL
FITNESS
LEVELS
Cardio Conditioning
This high-energy class offers all
the benefits of a muscle sculpting
class combined with different
cardio techniques such as steps,
BOSU ball and glides. Format will
differ from class to class to offer the best fat- and
calorie-burning workout in town.
Cardio Kick
A combination of aerobics, boxing and martial arts,
this is one of the most popular fitness trends to hit
gyms in recent years. This intense total-body workout
can improve strength, aerobic fitness, flexibility,
coordination and balance.
Group Cycle
Designed by an Olympic mountain-biking coach,
the Keiser M3 Plus bike brings the mountain-biking
experience indoors to safely deliver a full-body workout.
Unlike other cycling classes which just work the legs,
this cutting-edge cycling class works the whole body.
H.I.T (High Intensity Training)
Forty-five minutes of high intensity training exercises
with weights, bands and cardio intervals thrown in to
help get your heart rate up in that cardio zone. All while
sculpting and toning your muscles!
Hooping
Have fun while having a flashback to when you were a
kid! Enjoy a variety of hooping techniques to exercise
your arms, legs, abdomen and glutes. Hooping
improves flexibility, balance, motor skills, hand-eye
coordination and endurance. Plus, you’ll feel happy!
Muscle Sculpting
Instructors use barbells, free weights, bands and balls
to create the ultimate total body shaping class.
PILOXING ®
This fun and challenging class blends the power, speed
and agility of boxing with the beautiful sculpting and
flexibility of Pilates. The resulting unique mix of moves
provides a fat-torching, muscle-sculpting, core-centric
interval workout guaranteed to whip you into shape!
Using weighted gloves adds to the workout by toning
the arms and maximizing cardiovascular health.
Step & Sculpt
A dynamic blend of step and cardiovascular activities
along with intervals of strength movements help
increase muscle tone and the body’s metabolism. An
overall power packed workout!
TRX Suspension Training
Fee: $15 for fitness members, $25 non-members
TRX (Total Body Resistance Exercise) utilizes a band
(two-handled nylon strap) to harness the power of
gravity and movement for body weight exercises. The
result is a mix of support and mobility to train strength,
endurance, flexibility, coordination, balance, power and
core stability across a wide range of resistance.
Zumba
A fusion of Latin and international music provides the
backdrop for a blood pumping, effective cardiovascular
workout for all ages. A variety of fast and slow rhythms
help tone and sculpt the body while you learn easyto-follow
dance steps. Zumba Gold is the low-impact
version for all levels.
BASIC
Chair Class
Exercises designed for a chair for those individuals who
have difficulty getting down to the floor for mat work. Also
some standing work for balance training.
Exercise Chair
Working on a push-pull pulley system, the exercise
chair allows for a total body workout while sitting. They
are extremely easy to use and help increase flexibility,
balance, endurance and strength. The chair can
accommodate those with very limited mobility to those
who can get around and are looking to tone and increase
their upper body.
SENIORS CLASS
Senior Strength & Balance
Day: Mondays
Fee: Free – open to all seniors in the community
Day: Wednesdays, Fridays
