VETERANS DAY<br />
LESSON PLANS<br />
GRADE LEVE/COURSE: Social Studies, Kindergarten – Grade 5<br />
TITLE:<br />
Remembering Our Soldiers<br />
OBJECTIVES:<br />
1. Students will grow in <strong>the</strong>ir underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> important role our troops play,<br />
<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> important role citizens play in keeping up our troops' morale.<br />
2. Involve <strong>the</strong>mselves in community service by writing letters for, or ga<strong>the</strong>ring<br />
things <strong>to</strong> send <strong>to</strong>, our troops.<br />
SUGGESTED TIME: One-two class periods<br />
MATERIALS/AIDS NEEDED:<br />
1. Computer Access. If a computer lab is not available, students may log on <strong>to</strong><br />
various websites in small groups inside <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir classrooms.<br />
2. Construction Paper<br />

This Web site gives you an opportunity <strong>to</strong> send a free printed postcard <strong>to</strong> U.S.<br />
military personnel stationed overseas. Show your support <strong>and</strong> appreciation <strong>to</strong><br />
our troops in three easy steps.<br />
2. A Million Thanks (www.amillionthanks.org)<br />
Students <strong>of</strong> Lu<strong>the</strong>ran High School in Orange, California, started this project.<br />
Their goal is <strong>to</strong> send a million letters or postcards <strong>to</strong> our troops -- <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y've<br />
almost achieved that goal. You can help <strong>the</strong>m achieve that goal in time for<br />
<strong>Veterans</strong> <strong>Day</strong>! Visit <strong>the</strong> link above <strong>to</strong> learn how.<br />
3. Primary students can also use art supplies <strong>to</strong> create special cards for our<br />
troops. Various non-pr<strong>of</strong>it organizations exist that can assist in getting <strong>the</strong><br />
cards directly <strong>to</strong> our troops serving in <strong>the</strong> armed forces.
