VETERANS DAY<br />

LESSON PLAN<br />

GRADE LEVEL/COURSE: Social Studies, (Secondary) Grades 6 – 12<br />

TITLE:<br />

Veteran’s <strong>Day</strong> - Graphing Our His<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> Sacrifice<br />

OBJECTIVES:<br />

1. Study data related <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> Americans, both military <strong>and</strong> civilian, who<br />

have lost <strong>the</strong>ir lives in wars <strong>and</strong> conflicts.<br />

2. Create a graph <strong>to</strong> illustrate that data.<br />

3. Underst<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> significance <strong>of</strong> <strong>Veterans</strong> <strong>Day</strong> as a day for remembering <strong>the</strong><br />

sacrifices <strong>of</strong> our veterans, including those who lost <strong>the</strong>ir lives in service <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

country.<br />

SUGGESTED TIME: Two-three class periods<br />

MATERIALS NEEDED:<br />

1. Internet access (preferred) so students can work with <strong>the</strong> free online <strong>to</strong>ol, Create<br />

a Graph; options for using this graph-creation <strong>to</strong>ol include using a school's choice<br />

<strong>of</strong> graphing s<strong>of</strong>tware or art supplies<br />

2. Access <strong>to</strong> (or prin<strong>to</strong>uts from) Americans Killed in Action (Provided) <strong>and</strong><br />

American War Deaths throughout His<strong>to</strong>ry (Provided)<br />

DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITIES:<br />

1. In this lesson, students use an Internet-based <strong>to</strong>ol (provided) or graphing<br />

s<strong>of</strong>tware <strong>to</strong> create graphs showing our nation's "his<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> sacrifice." The graphs<br />

serve as visual reminders <strong>of</strong> those who fought for our country so we might enjoy<br />

<strong>the</strong> freedom we have <strong>to</strong>day, <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> reasons we pause each year on <strong>Veterans</strong><br />

<strong>Day</strong> <strong>to</strong> remember <strong>and</strong> honor <strong>the</strong>ir service.<br />

2. Give students access <strong>to</strong> Americans Killed in Action (provided) <strong>and</strong> American War<br />

Deaths throughout His<strong>to</strong>ry (Provided)<br />

3. Have students look over <strong>the</strong> lists. Talk about <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> conflicts from <strong>the</strong><br />

American Revolution <strong>to</strong> Operation Iraqi Freedom. In how many <strong>of</strong> those conflicts<br />

have more than 100 American lives been sacrificed? In how many <strong>of</strong> those<br />

conflicts have more than 1,000 American lives been lost? (Note: More current<br />

statistics from <strong>the</strong> wars in Iraq <strong>and</strong> Afghanistan can be found on <strong>the</strong> Department<br />

<strong>of</strong> Defense website at<br />

4. In order for students <strong>to</strong> see clearly <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> service men <strong>and</strong> women whose<br />

lives we remember, have <strong>the</strong>m create a graph in which <strong>the</strong>y illustrate all <strong>the</strong><br />

conflicts in which 1,000 or more lives were lost. Students might create <strong>the</strong> graphs
