4. Courses Outlines Programme-generic Courses DCO10106 Introduction to Programming The aim of this course is to introduce students the concepts, techniques, and practical skills of problem solving using computer programming. Students of this course will be trained to develop computer programs that are applicable in many modern computing environments as well as in their subsequent courses and professional development. DCO10111 Basic Calculus and Linear Algebra The aim of this course is to provide students with the basic concepts and techniques of linear algebra and calculus, and at the same time, demonstrate how to apply mathematical models and methods to solve problems in business, science, and engineering. It also aims to nurture students’ mathematics problem solving abilities which facilitates their mastering of subsequent courses. DCO10113 Foundation Statistics This course helps students understand the basic concepts of descriptive statistics, probability distributions, and the ideas of statistical inference. It also develops students’ quantitative reasoning skills which can apply to the various disciplines such as engineering, business and environmental studies. DCO10303 Understanding the Network-Centric World This course introduces the basic mechanism of the communication network, helps students to setup their own home network, and troubleshoots their broadband equipment. It enables students utilizing the network in a smart way and increasing their productivity in their disciplines with the latest technology. DCO21111 Discrete Mathematics The aims of this course are to introduce students the theories and applications of discrete mathematics; and simultaneously develop their ability to tackle scientific and engineering problems analytically, critically and rigorously which benefit their further development and studies. DCO21119 Ethics in Technology This course aims to examine the obligations, roles and professional conduct of a technologist (engineer or applied scientist) in the modern society; stimulate a basic awareness of the legal, environmental and socio-economic factors (economic, etc) which have a significant impact on and the use of technology; provide the students with an AEng Handbook 13
