If you’re after a
true blue country
experience, you
can’t look past a
homestead, station
or farmstay.
Set on acre after acre of unspoilt natural
bushland, the word ‘peaceful’ is but one
descriptor. This is without doubt where you
come to stay when you want to get away from it
all. You can watch beautiful sunsets, sit around
an open fire gazing at the bright explosion of
stars and experience the back-to-basics way of
rural life.
Homesteads and farmstays can be found in
various locations throughout the state, stretching
from Victor Harbor to Kangaroo Island to Beltana
in the northern Flinders Ranges. While sheep and
cattle stations, which are fast opening its doors
to travellers, are located in the furthest reaches of
the South Australian Outback.
Each property has its own unique history and
points of difference, so it’s advised to do your
research. Accommodation styles can range
from modest shearers’ quarters to classic
country farmstays to elegant homesteads.
Some places are self-catering, others include
meals – in fact, large cooked breakfasts shared
with a friendly host family and homemade dinners
using local produce can often be a drawcard.
Experiences on offer can also vary. There may
be opportunities to meet some true characters
who are happy to show you what real country
life is like or you might have the option to tour
stretches of pristine land where the only noises
are coming from local wildlife and birdlife.
Great for families, these are places where kids
can be kids – they can get dirty, get up close
with farm animals and appreciate the outdoors.
A homestead, station or farmstay is a unique,
down-to-earth holiday and accommodation
experience all rolled into one.
