covers communieations of over II half·<br />

million-miles. Possible? Yes, indeed. As<br />

II matter of lact, communication was<br />

made between WA7CJO in Phoenix,<br />

Arizona. <strong>and</strong> G3WDG <strong>and</strong> G4KGC in<br />

Engl<strong>and</strong> on 106Hz moorbounce. What<br />

follows Is the account from G3WDG<br />

covering this contact <strong>and</strong> some 01 lhe<br />

methods he used 10 make II.<br />

G3WDG <strong>and</strong> G4KGC made rwo EME<br />

OSOS on 106Hz. This is be6eved kI be<br />

the firs! made 011 this b<strong>and</strong> from the UK.<br />

The initial eso was with WA7CJO in<br />

Phoenix, ArIzona, 812230. This was the<br />

second anempt. The first lest on January<br />

30 was parti ally successful as<br />

WA7CJO was heard at good signal<br />

strength at G3WDG's location for II 01"1&­<br />

wayoontact<br />

"The anlenna in use In the UK was a<br />

to-root solid dish (Andrew 11 GHz version)<br />

mounted on an EVA: mount origlnaRy<br />

Intended for satellite TV use bU1<br />

modifl8d lor motor drive. The tish was<br />

scraped off from a local electronics<br />

company where G3WOO used to work.<br />

During Christmas 1992 the foundation<br />

was laid lor the tower <strong>and</strong> a week be·<br />

lore the first tesllhe dish was pu1 into its<br />

mount <strong>and</strong> the elevation azimuth drive<br />

motors were also Installed.<br />

"The rest of the equlpmenl consisted<br />

of a Hughes 28 watt TWT amplif ier.<br />

WASVJB <strong>and</strong> KY7B ~ in acquiring<br />

this tube <strong>and</strong> in relurtlis/W1g the powet<br />

supply. The TW T was driven by a<br />

G4DD K-00 4 <strong>and</strong> a G3WDG-001-designed<br />

transmitting module lor use in<br />

the 10 GHz system . An early design<br />

G3WDG-004 prototype HEMPT preamp<br />

was used to drive the receive converter.<br />

<strong>and</strong> a G3WDG-002 10 GHz converter<br />

was used in the 10 GHz converte r.<br />
