2010 – Celebrating 90 years of Education in the City
August 25, 2010 marked the 90th anniversary of George Taylor & Staff – the forerunner of Taylors College – opening its doors
in Melbourne. A party to celebrate the 90 th anniversary was held. Guests included past staff and students, university
representatives, Melbourne agents, past owners of Taylors College and present staff and students. Kaye Boniface, our
receptionist who has worked at Taylors for 46 years and Katie Phan , the chairperson of the Student Representative Committee
officiated in the cutting of the 90th birthday cake.
Founded in 1920 by teacher George Taylor, George Taylor & Staff was one of a number of coaching colleges established to
tutor students of the University of Melbourne. Within a few years ‘Taylors’ had overtaken most of the other coaching colleges
in terms of student numbers. Throughout the 1930s and 1940s Taylor’s College tutored thousands of students in preparing for
entry to the public service, teaching and nursing exams and during these years the Correspondence and Night Schools of the
College tutored many thousands of students. So successful was the College at providing this service that it opened a campus
in Sydney in 1936. With the advent of World War 2 many young men needed to improve their educational qualifications for
service in the armed forces and so Taylor’s assisted them in gaining these qualifications. Following the war many more
students sought assistance from Taylor’s College in augmenting their educational qualifications, many going on to university.
Approximately 10,000 service and ex-service personnel enrolled in courses offered by the College. The College enrolled its
first student from China in 1925. In the 1950s the College enrolled a large number of students who had been sent to Australia
to further their education under the Colombo Plan. The 1960s saw the College open a campus in Hong Kong and subsequently
another in Kuala Lumpur. The College also established a Hotel Management School in Hong Kong. In the early 1980s the
College began enrolling students at its Melbourne campus from south-east Asian countries – Malaysia, Singapore, India – and
in the 1990s China became the main source of students studying for university entrance through the College’s programs.
Between 1920 and 1970 some 320,000 students gained educational qualifications through the College.
Taylor’s College remained a family-run business with George Taylor at the helm for fifty-four years, until 1974. For fifty years
George Taylor was assisted by Miss Inez Sexton who served as vice-principal. In 1997 Taylors College became part of the
Study Group network of companies.
