VISIT TO THE RAAF BASE
On Wednesday, 29 th May, we attended a RAAF Work Experience at the Townsville RAAF Base. We met our tour
guide at the front gate and received guest bags which included a bright orange shirt so we could be recognised
on the base. Our first stop was the RAAF airport where we learnt about all the people who worked to keep the
airport functioning. We also had a look at the cargo area and loading equipment. The second stop was to a
station that they had set up to show some of the equipment, food and bedding they have to use when out in
the field. We sawl the computing and food rationing systems along with the tents they sleep in. Next we moved
to the base gym and completed a fitness test to give us a guide of how fit you must be to join the RAAF. (We all
passed!!!)
At lunch we had a variety of delicious foods, sides and drinks at the Mess. We had
spare time to mingle with other people who were also on the tour. After talking
with the others for a while we hopped back into the tour bus and went over to the
safety equipment storage to look at the life rafts and learn a bit about the
procedures which would be followed in an emergency. Outside we looked inside a
plane and we also got to see some of the F18 Fighter Jets take off from the base.
The next stop was to air traffic control where we learnt about the variables you
must consider when directing and guiding planes. In the control tower we saw the
men who actually talk to the pilots directly about their flight path. After this we
moved onto the dog squad area where they teach the dogs how to attack people
who are a threat to the community. Finally, we finished our tour with an
informative presentation on the career options available to us in the RAAF. Overall
we had a fantastic day and learnt a lot from the opportunity.
