Dear Parents, Guardians and Friends
Honouring the Past and Forging the Future
Gospel Value: Love
While we all enjoyed a long weekend for the Queen’s Birthday, let’s spare a thought for our
teachers who would have spent many hours in marking exams and assignments and then
reporting on our students’ progress. This period of time is very full for our teachers and
students and I commend them for their persistence and preparedness in fulfilling these
obligations.
As the term rushes to the end, there are members of our community engaged with preparing
for the capital works, which will begin these holidays. Business Manager, Ann Chalmers has
supervised an efficient plan for vacating the buildings which will be demolished during the
coming school break.
As was communicated to you last week by School Safety Officer, Mary O’Toole, the removal
of the materials containing asbestos will be done in accordance with the Queensland
Workplace Health and Safety Act (2011) and will also comply with Occupational Health and
Safety Regulations (2007) Asbestos. All the asbestos removal will be carried out by an
asbestos licence holder.
Grab your Op-Shop gear and your runners and come along to the great family day out –
Beat the Street Fun Run (or Walk!) Senior Leader Katie Gould has been busy planning
for this special event to be held on Saturday, 15 June 8.30am for a 9am start. Gold coin
donations from all participants will go towards the fundraising of Ms Collette Brickhill (APRE)
who will participating in the St Vincent de Paul CEO Sleep-out for Homelessness.
We should all be familiar with the Beatitudes, a set of teachings by Jesus that appear in the
Gospels of Matthew and Luke. Below you will find a contemporary take on the Beatitudes – a
commentary on “attitude” – well worth considering…
Blessed are those who can laugh at themselves; they will always have entertainment.
Blessed are those who can distinguish between a mountain and a molehill; they will save
themselves a lot of trouble.
Blessed are those who can rest and sleep without looking for excuses; they will become
wise.
Blessed are those who are intelligent enough not to take themselves too seriously; they
will be appreciated.
Blessed are you if you can look seriously at small things and peacefully at serious things;
you will go far in life.
Blessed are you if you can admire a smile and forget a scowl; your path will be sunlit.
Blessed are you if you can always interpret the attitudes of others with good will, even
when appearances are to the contrary; you may seem naive, but that is the price of
charity.
Blessed are those who think before acting and who laugh before thinking; they will avoid
foolish mistakes.
Blessed are you if you know how to be silent and smile, even when you are interrupted,
contradicted or walked on; the gospel is beginning to take root in your heart.
Blessed are you especially if you know how to recognize the Lord in all those you meet;
you have found the true light, true wisdom.
TERM 2 BLOCK SPORT RESULTS
SMMC A played their final game against William Ross. Our team continued their winning
streak, defeating WRSHS 31-13. SMMC A remained undefeated throughout the whole six
week block. The girls showed extraordinary Maggie Spirit and should be so proud of their
efforts. Well done girls!
In the last game of the season, SMMC took on William Ross High School. In a great display
of Maggie's spirit, Emily Balanzategui offered to play for the under-strength WRHS, and
shot for them for the entire game. SMMC were too strong for WRHS and took an early lead
which they maintained for the game, with the final result 20-9. Thanks for a great season
SMMC B1!!
SMMC B2 managed a win in their final game of the season, beating Thuringowa SHS in a
nailbiter, 20-19. Special mention to Tyler Beaumont and Annika Brice who both played
one half each for the opposing side because they were short. A great effort by all.
SMMC A travelled to Town High for the third time this season to play their final game of the
season. The girls played with great spirit and enthusiasm and demonstrated some
sensational skills. The game was a high quality display of basketball and came down to the
last 2 minutes. In the end TSHS took a 59-57 win. The girls had a wonderful season with
some great basketball played. Many of the girls now look forward to Open Basketball next
term. They were an absolute pleasure to coach – Mr Grubba.
SMMC B1 played Annandale CC in their last game of the season. The girls tried hard again
this week and showed improvement from the start of the season. Well done girls!
SMMC B2 had a great last game against SPC. The girls have had a great season and have
shown great Maggie Spirit through their support and encouragement of each other. We
thank Judy Sailor who volunteered to referee the entire game. Great job, girls!
SMMC A showed great spirit, and had heaps of chances in the first 10 minutes of their game
against The Cathedral School. They got tired after that effort and The Cathedral School had
a lot of chances in the next 10 minutes - but Erryn Doxey was fantastic Goal Keeper!
Halftime score was 1:1. Then in the second half Darcy Bailey scored another goal, this
time via Amanda LeCornu and we grabbed the lead. - ALL THE EIGHT GIRLS were
excellent. Emily Sweetland was the once again amazing with so much energy.
Chelsea Pasterello, Jess Ley and Darcy Bailey played like professionals - tricks, runs,
passes all good.
Erryn Doxey in the goal - what an amazing day for her (saved 10-times)
Lucy Campbell scored our first and tried to grab every ball she could.
In defense Priashanti Babao was lightning fast.
Amanada LeCournu played well and scored the third!
Great Season, girls.
The side travelled to Murray and faced Kirwan SHS in their last game of the season. The
girls came out hard and never looked back. The game was played in great spirit and in the
end SMMC took a 3-1 win. Good work, girls.
The Vicki Wilson girls played Pimlico SHS this week in the VW competition. Caitlin Niven
filled in for this game and played a strong game for the side. In the end the girls had a
comfortable 35-10 win. The girls play Kirwan SHS on Tuesday 18 June. If they are able to
win this one then they will probably progress to the regional finals. Good luck, girls.
VISIT TO THE RAAF BASE
On Wednesday, 29 th May, we attended a RAAF Work Experience at the Townsville RAAF Base. We met our tour
guide at the front gate and received guest bags which included a bright orange shirt so we could be recognised
on the base. Our first stop was the RAAF airport where we learnt about all the people who worked to keep the
airport functioning. We also had a look at the cargo area and loading equipment. The second stop was to a
station that they had set up to show some of the equipment, food and bedding they have to use when out in
the field. We sawl the computing and food rationing systems along with the tents they sleep in. Next we moved
to the base gym and completed a fitness test to give us a guide of how fit you must be to join the RAAF. (We all
passed!!!)
At lunch we had a variety of delicious foods, sides and drinks at the Mess. We had
spare time to mingle with other people who were also on the tour. After talking
with the others for a while we hopped back into the tour bus and went over to the
safety equipment storage to look at the life rafts and learn a bit about the
procedures which would be followed in an emergency. Outside we looked inside a
plane and we also got to see some of the F18 Fighter Jets take off from the base.
The next stop was to air traffic control where we learnt about the variables you
must consider when directing and guiding planes. In the control tower we saw the
men who actually talk to the pilots directly about their flight path. After this we
moved onto the dog squad area where they teach the dogs how to attack people
who are a threat to the community. Finally, we finished our tour with an
informative presentation on the career options available to us in the RAAF. Overall
we had a fantastic day and learnt a lot from the opportunity.
