Dear Parents, Guardians and Friends
GOSPEL VALUE ~ INCLUSION
Semester Two! Unbelievably we are entering our second half of the school year. Welcome back
to all and a special welcome to the new members of our community. There are several new
students in Year 9, Kirra Greer (9.1), Tahlia Rogers (9.2), Katelyn Hunt (9.3), Josephine
Koppe (9.3) and Keely Mullins (9.3). In Year 10 we welcome Louise Mukamugema (10.4) and
in Year 11, our exchange student from Italy, Eleonora Mele.
We also have new staff with us and I warmly welcome Brian Hawke who replaces Mr Vitale ,
Leanne Arnold who replaces Mr Park, Rita Foster who replaces Ms Battistel and Sarah Forrest who
replaces Mrs Christensen. Welcome to Ms Margaret Paul and Ms Cecilia Ankomah who join the
cleaning staff.
Sadly, this week we say farewell to a member of our college community – Mrs Del Williams who
has decided to retire after 17 years of dedicated service. Del was one of the first people I had the
pleasure of seeing on my visit to the college last year and her warmth and friendliness was evident
from that first encounter. She introduced me to her team of cleaning staff and it was clear they
worked so well together. Del was among the college‟s first group of secondary students at St
Margaret Mary‟s College, and her daughter Linda was a student here also, so her association with
the college is life-long. I have no doubt that she will return from time to time to say hello. Her
cheery presence will be sorely missed, as the students and staff here love her and wish her the
best of health and happiness in her retirement. She richly deserves some rest and relaxation, and
I know she will spread the Maggie spirit wherever she goes! God bless, Del!
This week St Margaret Mary‟s College will recognise NAIDOC, which is a time to celebrate the
history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. On Thursday
at 12.20pm the college will hold special lunchtime celebrations.
The “Bella Voce” families and friends will be welcoming a group of American students this week.
These lucky students are travelling and experiencing school life in an Australian school and we are
pleased to provide hospitality to them. Thank you to the families who have been able to help.
Our Inter-House Athletics Carnival takes place this Friday and it will be wonderful to see all the
House colours again! I have no doubt that students will enjoy the event, and I remind you that it
is normal school day and all should attend. (Further details are in this newsletter)
Please ensure you make your appointments to see the teachers at the Parent Reporting evening
this coming Wednesday, 18 th July. This is an excellent opportunity for two-way communication
to occur with the express purpose of improving student outcomes.
The Year of Grace is upon us – and all throughout the Catholic Church in Australia, there is a
concerted focus on ‘Starting Afresh from Christ’. We are encouraged to:
Listen to the Word of God – to foster a relationship with Jesus Christ
Have experiences of remembering – becoming more aware of God‟s grace in our daily
lives
Focus on encountering and responding to Jesus Christ in our daily lives
Pause for reflection: Identify times we have reflected the face of Christ to others; the helping
hand, extending our care and sympathy, being a shoulder to lean on, listening to others in our
busy moments Are we prepared to accept the diversity and differences we experience in people?
Be resolute to continue these generous responses.
Blessings!
Kathy Park
Principal
The St Margaret Mary’s College community acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land on which the College stands,
the Wulgurukaba and the Bindal-Giru People, and pay our respects to the elders both past, present and future.

COLLEGE LEADERSHIP TEAM
SEXTING
You may have noticed in the Townsville Bulletin on Tuesday a detailed article about the dangers of “Sexting” for
teenagers.
Townsville school-based police officers warn that the practice of sexting, which involves teenagers taking nude
photos and sending them to friends, is becoming normalised behaviour, and that this concerning trend is
occurring more with girls.
There are serious legal consequences regarding sexting since such photos and images are viewed as the
creation of child pornography.
Please remember to talk openly with your daughters about such issues and their possible consequences,
following the Guidelines for Parents listed below.
Mardi Christ – Deputy Principal - Pastroal Care
mchrist1@smmc.catholic.edu.au
Guidelines For Parents
The following tips can help guide teens in the choices they make when using mobile phones, web cams and
sending messages.
1. Talk with your teen about sexting and the social and legal consequences it can have.
2. Remind your teen to delete any sexual content they receive from others and to avoid forwarding this
type of content.
3. Remind your teen to consider the feelings of others when taking photos and distributing any content by
mobile phone or online.
4. Learn how to use your teen‟s mobile phone and talk with them about what they can and can‟t do with
it.
5. If you are concerned that a sexting incident may be a criminal matter, contact your local police.
6. If your teen is exposed to inappropriate content or involved in creating such content talk with them
about it. If necessary seek professional support, including support through the Cybersmart Online
Helpline at http://www.cybersmart.gov.au/report.aspx The Cybersmart Online Helpline provides free,
confidential online counselling for children and young people. Your teen‟s school may also be able to
provide guidance or support.
INVOLVED IN NATIONALLY SIGNIFICANT
RESEARCH ON STUDENT WELLBEING IN
SCHOOLS
Schools in the Archdiocese of Townsville have been invited to participate
in exciting new research on student wellbeing in schools being
undertaken by the Centre for Children and Young People at Southern
Cross University.
This project, supported by funding from the Australian Research Council and three other partner organisations,
is the first of its kind in Australia and aims to improve what we know and do in our schools in relation to
student wellbeing. The research is timely and important given the special emphasis we place on supporting
wellbeing in schools.
One of the most important elements of the research is that students, as well as teachers and Principals, will
have the opportunity to tell us about how schools can help with their wellbeing. One of the other unique aspects
of the research is that a group of children and young people are advising on the design of the project to help
ensure the research questions speak to the experience of students.
All schools in the Townsville Archdiocese will have an opportunity to participate in the research. The first stage
(July 2012) involves teacher interviews and student focus groups with 6 schools (3 primary and 3 secondary).
St Margaret Mary‟s College is one of the six schools chosen to participate in this first stage of the project.
We will write to you if your child has been invited to participate in one of these focus group discussions, and is
happy to do so, since their involvement will require your consent. We are keenly interested in finding out from
the research the ways in which we can continue to improve student wellbeing at our school.
The second stage of the research (proposed for Oct-Nov 2012) will involve an online survey with all primary
and secondary students in CEO Townsville schools being invited to participate.
SUBJECT CHANGES FOR YEAR 11 STUDENTS
Adjusting to the standard required for Year 11 subjects can be difficult to appreciate until you have experienced
a subject for a Semester. Hence, a few students may find that they cannot cope with the work standard
required in a certain subject. The start of this semester is a good time to review progress in subjects. This
review may result in students needing to reappraise their time commitments to their school work and/or
applying themselves better. This reflection may also result in the need to look at an alternate subject. Students
who wish to discuss their SET Plans should make an appointment with Mrs Glenwright. Students wishing to
discuss subject changes can also make an appointment with me. All subject changes for Semester 2 should be
completed by Friday 20 th July.
THE POWER OF PEERS – A MENTORING PROGRAMME FOR YEARS
8 AND 9 STUDENTS
Term 3 will see the continuation of a wonderful programme that has been operating at SMMC over the last 5
years, The Peer Lounge. The Peer Lounge is a peer mentoring programme that allows students in Years 8 and
9 to work with Year 11 mentors in a fun and supportive environment.
The Peer Lounge operates with students in groups of ten, from Years 8 and 9. These junior peers work with
three Year 11 Peer Leaders. The programme runs over 8 weeks and involves 40 minutes on Thursday
afternoons from 3:30 – 4:10pm. The Peer leaders run each session with a supervising teacher on hand in each
of the rooms. This year‟s enthusiastic group of Y11 leaders are: Lily Mitchell, Catharina Offermans, Marthaline
David, Elena Donohue, Kyra Morrison, Amy Kuskopf, Holly Morton, Amy Johnson and Bo Ryan.
The Peer Leaders work with their junior peers on activities that help them learn to use positive self-talk, apply
skills that promote optimistic attitudes, develop and promote empathy, demonstrate perseverance and develop
resilience.
This programme uses leaders to help train future leaders in the community. The participants learn about being
empowered in order to help others to be empowered. For further information, or if you would like your
daughter to be involved in this highly worthwhile programme, The Peer Lounge, please contact me
2012 SMMC INTERHOUSE ATHLETICS CARNIVAL PROGRAM
FRIDAY 13 JULY – TOWNSILLE SPORTS RESERVE

It was week two of Term 1, and
dozens of keen SMMC students
packed in to the school theatre to
audition for what would soon be the
exciting production of „Narnia: The
Musical‟. Together, students,
teachers and other volunteers from
SMMC, Ignatius Park and Saint
Patrick‟s College put together a
great performance of the wellknown
C.S. Lewis tale, The Lion,
the Witch and the Wardrobe.
After many rehearsals, „Narnia: The
Musical‟ was brilliantly performed
on stage at the Riverway Arts
Centre. A cast of around sixty
students from all three schools
delivered what was an interesting
and exciting performance, which
showcased the hard work that all of
the cast and crew had put into it.
This year, many girls from SMMC
featured as leads in the show. Kelly
Wilson and Meghan Boon, who
played Lucy and Susan, did a
brilliant job at showing their „sibling
love‟, and gave excellent portrayals
of these two famous characters.
Madison Tomarchio, who played
Mrs Beaver, charmed the audience
with her brilliant accent and cheery
singing and Yasmin
Jayawardhana did a fantastic job
as Mrs Macready. Steph Mears,
who played the role of the White
Stag, danced beautifully. All cast
and crew finished off with a wellexecuted
show, which was definitely
something to be proud of!
Special thanks to Mrs Bonaventura,
Mrs Bent and Ms Sheriff, as well as
many more staff, students, parents
and friends for all of the hard work
and countless hours they put into
this production. Finally, a special
congratulations and thanks to
Madison Tomarchio, Yasmin
Jayawardhana and Steph Mears, for
their dedication to production year
after year. It won‟t be the same
without you!
YEAR 11 SPORTS & REC TREK
Our bus journey began as we lugged half our wardrobe tightly squeezed into suitcases to school where the bus
awaited eager students and teachers on an early morning start. Spending the big $$ at Woolworths the
previous day students struggled to load all their items onto the bus. Despite the short 45 minute drive to Camp
Gedling the girls believed that the camp was far away from civilisation.
The first day proved to be action packed as students were separated into three groups participating in team
building activities, abseiling and orienteering. Team building assisted in students growing their trust in one
another to encourage and support their peers when it came to abseiling. Abseiling proved to be too much in the
end for some as their fear overcame their desire to abseil down the 21 metre cliff face. However, an abundance
of eager and thrill seeking students took their leap of faith and succeeded with the help of instructor, Steve and
the great assistance of Wozza and Joe who manned the safety rope we were attached to. After an exciting
orienteering session with Mr Park students were able to master the intricacies of working with a compass to find
or set a pathway through the bush. The Year 11 SMMC Sport and Rec students will not be getting lost any time
soon.
With Ms Wiles being the mad footballer she is, the thought of missing a game of State of Origin was not an
option. After hours of constructing the grand TV with the assistance of Ms Quinn the projector was all set for
the night. Girls flocked to the dining room bringing their own „A‟ game dressing in their Queensland supporter
gear wearing jerseys and jumpers to support the Maroons on a thriller game in Sydney. With the support of
forty Queensland fans and the odd blues fans that were frowned upon, the dining room‟s atmosphere was filled
with rivalry. After screaming and yelling that could be heard throughout the campsite, Miss Wiles accepted
defeat as Queensland lost by four points.
The next morning the girls awoke to Ms Wiles and Ms Quinn furiously shaking tents. The day ticked off with a
buffet breakfast cooked by the students. The eventful day consisted of high ropes, knot tying and first aid.
Once again, the students were asked to step out of their comfort zone and mentally challenge themselves to
complete the high ropes course. Mr Park gave us the '101' on knot tying and made it out to be as easy as,
'Bob`s your uncle.‟ Our first aid knowledge gained at school was challenged when Ms Wiles gave scenarios
where we had to respond to with the right techniques. The day concluded with groups cooking on the fire and a
surprise visit from Mr Grubba to showcase his broken finger. The night was carried away with girls singing and
chatting around the camp fire, roasting marshmallows under the glistening night sky.
As much as we hated leaving the grounds of Camp Gelding, everyone sprung onto the bus ready to return to
warm showers, phone reception for all and comfortable beds. The camp was a great success allowing girls to
step out of their comfort zones and experience real camping. Thank you to Mr Park, Mr Grubba, Ms Quinn, Miss
Wiles, Wozza and Joe for making the camp possible.
YCS MULTICULTURAL FESTIVAL
Kebabs sizzled, corn chips crackled and infectious enthusiasm set the stage for the SMMC‟s YCS Multicultural
Festival. YCS is a worldwide student run movement which encourages youth to follow the example of Jesus
Christ and work together to make a difference not only in our own lives but the lives of others. One of the
initiatives adopted by the Young Christian Students in 2012 was the National Campaign for Refugees, which
proposes 100% respect for all refugees and asylum seekers. Leading up to the festival, the SMMC @YCS raised
awareness in the community about this social justice issue, Year 12 student, Caitlynn Shelley presented a
thought provoking and moving presentation of the marginalised and silenced journey of a refugee entering our
country. The St Margaret Mary‟s families along with the YCS team banded together to create many delicious
dishes on this day such as Nonna‟ s famous pasta, authentic Indian samosas, fresh rolls of sushi, Greek lamb
kebabs and mouth watering nachos. One hundred students and staff enjoyed the thumping beats of salsa and
hip-hop with the exhilarating latin inspired dance party- Zumba! A buzz electrified the oval and the smiles were
contagious. The Free Water stand stood to emphasise the fact that SMMC belongs to the 50% of schools in the
world that have access to clean water, promoting the great luxury of clean water and encouraging gratitude
and appreciation for this privilege.
Overall the day was a huge success thanks to the support of the SMMC community .The YCS team look forward
to hosting this event annually, promising a bigger and better event in years to come.
BOOK REVIEW OF THE WEEK
“LIFE AFTER”
This story is about the life of a young girl, Dani, after a terrorist attack kills her aunt and
unborn cousin in Buenos Aires. This sets off a chain of events that lead Dani and her
family to America as Argentinian immigrants. They know no-one and speak very little
English. Then Dani meets Jon, Jessica and Brian who help her adjust to life, after.
The main character, Dani, is a strong-willed girl who works very hard to keep the peace
at home and at school and is easy to relate to.
The writing is very clear and easy to read with a few Spanish words thrown in to further
develop some characters.
This teen fiction novel would be suitable for girls of any age who enjoy reading heartwarming
stories.
Parents and care-givers, this is your opportunity to be as nagging as
physically possible. St Margaret Mary‟s is receiving four recycling bins
specifically for cans, cartons, newspapers, glass and plastic; any item with
the recycling symbol is on the packaging (the triangle made out of arrows).
Please embrace recyclable items in your girl‟s lunches and feel free to hastle
them about recycling these items. If the privilege of these recycling bins is
abused, we will lose them completely which is an outcome we would like to
avoid.
