Current Concepts
in Echocardiography
Friday, September 18, 2015
Saint John Regional Hospital – Amphitheatre, Level 5D
Chairman: David Bewick, MD
Learning Objectives:
• Evaluate and employ contemporary approaches utilizing echocardiography in patients with
valvular heart disease, cardiomyopathies and disorders of the pericardium
• Review the role of echocardiography in the emergency room
• Incorporate current and emerging clinical evidence in the comprehensive echocardiographic
assessment in the patient with a prosthetic valve
• Discuss the practical utility of echocardiography using a case based format
Target Audience:
Cardiologists
Internists
Sonographers
Allied Healthcare
0730 – 0830 Registration – Level 1, Amphitheatre
Valvular Heart Disease – ACC/AHA 2014 Guidelines – Why
Do We Need New Guidelines?
• Re-classification of stages of valvular heart disease
• Evolving indications for intervention
• Complex patients with valvular heart disease
Severe Heart Failure – Moving Beyond The EF
• Diastolic dysfunction / indices
• Quantification /strain imaging
• Role of 3D volume measurement
• MRI / CT
The Ejection Fraction is widely accepted and utilized as a primary indicator
of myocardial performance, but is known to have significant limitations. This
presentation will review its limitations, methodological pitfalls and alternative
imaging modalities that may provide additive and useful information.
Unusual Causes of Heart Failure and The Role Of Echo
Echocardiography is the initial imaging modality in patients with heart failure. It is
critical in determining the etiology of heart failure and guiding future management.
This presentation will use a case based approach to some of the less common
causes of heart failure and how echocardiography can be used in their diagnosis
and management.
