Welcome and Introduction
Learning Track: Rhythm Management
Challenges in the Management of Atrial Fibrillation
• Contemporary use of anti-arrhythmic drugs – when should I worry?
--
Pro-arrhythmia, QT prolongation, medication interactions, electrolyte disturbances
• Lenient Versus Strict Rate Control?
--
A 65 year old man has permanent AF and 24 hour Holter shows average
heart rate 100 bpm, range 80-140 bpm. He feels well. Is this rate control good enough?
ICDs and Ventricular Tachycardia
• AICD indications – what’s inappropriate in 2015?
• Does patient age affect risk of death/rehospitalisation after primary ICD?
• Management of VT/VF storm in advanced heart failure
Some patients with low ejection fraction may not benefit from prophylactic ICD implantation.
How can you identify such patients and not refer for consideration? Is patient age one of those
adverse risks? VT/VF storm in advanced heart failure is difficult to successfully treat. We will
discuss what not to miss and what to avoid.
Avoiding Sudden Death
20 Year old female runner presented with syncope and QTC 490 ms
• How do you make the diagnosis of a familial arrhythmia syndrome?
• The Cardiac Channelopathies: Who needs genetic testing. Who needs an ICD?
• ARVC in Atlantic Canada – How common is it?
1000 – 1030 Nutrition Break – Please visit our exhibitors in the Light Court.
1030 – 1200
Moderator:
Martin Green, MD
Challenging the Experts
Expert Panel: Dr. Sean Connors, Martin Gardner and John Sapp
• A 76 year-old woman with CHA2DS2VASc score of 4, palpitations and brief AF
on implanted pacemaker – how much atrial fibrillation buys you anticoagulation?
• A 25 year old man with a Brugada pattern ECG
• My 280 lb 54 year old patient with obstructive sleep apnea has AF
and wants an ablation – weight loss and lifestyle?
• 23 year old male with severe asymptomatic PR, dilated RV and transient,
asymptomatic 3 rd degree AV block detected on Holter
1200 – 1300 Lunch – Please visit our exhibitors in the Light Court.
Please note that 25% question/answer time is included in each lecture/presentation time allotment.
