NYSSA <strong>Online</strong> Magazine President’s Message by Mike Fischer mfischer@nysnowmobiler.com New Year; New Issues Welcome to 2010! With Jim Jennings‘ shift to part-time support staff status, Dave Perkins assumed the role of Executive Director as of January 1. I hope all of you will join me in welcoming Dave to that slot, and congratulate him on his promotion. Dave has already jumped into the fire, and with several important issues facing NYSSA, will be busy navigating our organization through the minefields. Photo by Anne O’Dell One of the most critical items afoot is the lawsuit filed by the Adirondack Council (AC) attempting to stop the APA from moving forward with the snowmobile plan. NYSSA has decided to participate in the suit as an interested party, and will work to protect the interests of snowmobile trails within the Adirondack Park. Dave Perkins and Jim Jennings have been immersed in the work of the APA and will continue to provide representation for NYSSA clubs and members. Trail Funding Thanks to the strong registration levels this far, the NYS OPRHP announced an additional $500k will be added to local trail grants this season. Those monies will be included in the 30% Phase III awards, and will be based upon the current trail mileage rate breakdowns. Registrations this year had been running behind last season, but thanks to widespread snow cover that hit the state during the holidays, the numbers have caught up with last season‘s tally. It does appear that the decline in registrations over the past several years has indeed leveled out. Corporate Sponsorships and Partnerships As reported elsewhere in this edition, the BRP promotion is bringing more than $56,000 to 175 NYSSA clubs. In fact, 20 clubs each earned more than $1,000 by having their club members visit participating Ski-Doo dealers. It should be obvious that NYS snowmobilers are an important consumer group. The NYSSA discount program is growing in leaps and bounds, as our business partners look for a piece of the $1 billion pie that we bring to the state‘s economy. Western Region Meeting The NYSSA Board of Directors held the January 9 board meeting in western New York. The agenda included an open forum for club representatives to gather and discuss issues of interest to the region. Many local vintage snowmobilers attended the meeting to show support for NYSSA‘s efforts in seeking reduced registration fees for vintage collectors. As we look ahead to the 2010-2011 budget process, we expect to seek new ways to continue to provide regional meetings, and the opportunity for club representatives to participate in NYSSA‘s leadership.
