But, I was passing through town last week and noticed a gas sign on the Conoco station that read $2.45 per gallon. Corky’s is historically not only the cheapest gas station in the county, but also provides Remi or Mike to, get this, actually fill your tank for you (shades of the 1960s). I always like to ask the boys, “Can ya get any service in this joint?” “No,” Mike always answers. “Fill it with the cheap stuff,” I reply, and then he proceeds to fill the tank with unleaded gas. Unlimited Internet - $40.00. 926-8603. $2.45 a gallon in Gypsum, I wondered? That is lower than Kansas City and Denver prices. I looked down at the gas gauge in my car and it read “empty,” so I pulled in and filled up, feeling very good about only paying $2.45 per gallon. And, then I noticed it. A new Kum N Go gas station magically appeared across the street in that forever vacant lot in front of the Columbine Market. Now, I understood. Competition has arrived in Gypsum! The next day, I had to be back in Gypsum again and noticed that $2.45 per gallon was gone, and was replaced by $2.58 per gallon. Geez, that didn’t last long. I didn’t really need gas, but I decided to buy some at the new Kum N Go, just to check out the inside of the store, which looked pretty nice. Unfortunately, it took forever to get the credit card to work in the new pumps, because the store was in the process of lowering the price by a penny, so it could be a cent lower than the Conoco across the street. While waiting for the computers to come back up, I decided to shoot some pictures and talk to people at both gas stations. Clearly, I was in the middle of a goodole-fashioned gas war. I liked that, having grown immune to paying some of the highest gas prices in the country in Vail for the last 35 years. This was an event of epic proportion. A real gas war in Eagle County. I have never seen that before. So, when the Kum N Go dropped it’s price to $2.57 right in front of me, I felt badly because I had just paid $2.58. Then, I drove across the street and took pictures of a girl at the Conoco, dropping her station’s price to $2.56 minutes later. Na - na na, na - na - na! G y p s u m g a s s t a t i o n s b a t t l e f o r c u s t o m e r s ! Just like two little kids trying to best each other. It felt “really good” taking advantage of this. But, I’ll still buy from Corky’s in Eagle. They have consistently had the lowest prices in the county for years. Besides, I wouldn’t be happy if I couldn’t ask, “Can ya get any service in this joint?” L e v i G . Business Briefs - Vail, Colorado - www.BusinessBriefs.net - Aug 26 thru Sept 29, 2010 - Page 3 Vail Council wants to add debt, without voter approval Publisher’s Opinion If you ran a business in Eagle County, would you borrow $12 million in this economic climate, and pay it back, along with $7 million more in interest? This publisher wouldn’t, and neither would Vail Councilman Kevin Foley. Should government do it without voter approval, as required by the state constitution’s Taxpayer Bill of Rights (TABOR), which was initiated by voters state-wide and passed in 1992? It appears that most of the rest of the Vail Council thinks so, as no one else objected to that idea at a 1pm meeting of the council on Tuesday, August 17th. This Vail meeting was held 30 minutes prior to Council’s usually wellnoticed work session, while acting as another legal entity known as the Vail Re- Investment Authority, with only three-to-four days notice of the meeting, and conveniently minutes before the Channel 5 Public Access camera would arrive to shoot the regular work session meeting, to prevent voters from being informed. Vail’s experienced bond counsel, Dee Wisor, cited a 2001 Colorado Appellate Court decision, offering his opinion that their decision eliminates the need for voter approval for borrowing money in this instance, thereby overturning TABOR.. This case was never brought before the Colorado Supreme Court, but most Colorado courts have been known for overturning voters’ rights. And, the courts wonder why the “Clear the Bench” campaign wants more judges removed for usurping voters’ rights in the November election! If the loan idea passes at the Tuesday, September 21st meeting of the Authority, it would indebt Vail taxpayers for the next 20 years. The Authority doesn’t even know what it wants to Gary says, “Boyz Toyz & Sonz now rents ATVs!” spend the money on. Did I mention that Vail has approximately $50 million in reserves that it could use instead of borrowing money? Did I mention that Vail will have $3 million more in cash available at the end of the year that it could apply to this, plus it could tap $10 million from the voter-approved tax for a never-to-be-built conference center, that voters could simply approve for this new purpose, thereby saving the need to borrow $12 million? But, to do that, the council would have to ask for voter approval. They obviously don’t trust voters to do that? The fact is, the Vail Town Council doesn’t trust the voters to approve indebting themselves for 20 years, in what could be a loan up to $26 million, plus $14 million or more in interest! They are right.
