And, without question, Wah Wah Beach Bar is THE place to go! JJ & Kim Johnston had a vision for an out of date property known as “La Ruina,” Spanish for The Ruins, which was a small hotel in front of a 1,000 year old Mayan ruin. JJ, who formerly worked in commercial real estate development in Dallas, Texas, was also no stranger to the music business, and decided to live his dream on the beach in downtown Playa. Besides operating Wah Wah Beach, JJ is also the leader of a 70s, classic rock and country coveband affectionately known as “The Nasty Bastards.” Don’t let the name fool you. These are nice guys who play great cover music that is easy to listen and dance to. Bigger is definitely better! The Johnston’s dreamed big and turned the old rooms into a big kitchen, storage and bathrooms, and built a huge stage for dances and concerts. The stage is 70 square meters and the dance floor has plenty of room with a 50 square meter dance floor. An amazing 8 meter wide video viewing area Nightime at Wah Wah Beach Bar in downtown Playa del Carmen, Mexico. This shot, taken from the beach, shows the private terrace and the huge video screen! Wah Wah is “The Place” to get married in Playa del Carmen! (that’s about 24 feet wide) by a 6 meter high (that’s about 18 feet high) giant viewing area is behind the huge stage. The large, centrally located circular bar features (4) High Definition 46” LED wide screens with your favorite sports team on each TV, during the day and night as needed. The 7,000 square foot facility includes a 12 meter high (that’s about 36 feet high) palapa (grass and wood roof), the largest palapa roof on the beach designed to help keep the rarely occasional bad weather out. This on-the-beach bar and restaurant was built for parties, weddings, fundraisers, concerts and dances. And, it was built for live music! Sundays are special at Wah Wahs! Every Sunday, the chef has a Pig Roast Buffet for around 100 Avon - Red Mtn. Grill pesos (about $9.00 US). This is an unbelievable value for people who like to eat great food. The Business Briefs publisher always likes to get their early to be near the front of the line. Your 9 bucks also gets you some terrific live music, often by the 8- piece Cuban Salsa Band. And, get this - Wah Wahs gives you free lounge chairs and umbrellas on the beach! Most everybody else requires you to buy something or pay to rent the chairs! The pig roast and music starts around 2pm and goes until 5pm. Take a break at 5pm for a short siesta, get a shower, then come back at 7pm for Jam Session, a 7-piece rhythm and blues combo that plays 50s, 60s and 70s music. This is a great place to spend a Sunday on the beach in downtown Playa! Eagle - Grand Ave. More great music throughout the week! nights, from 7 to 10pm, Wah Wahs features Dani Kosh & Procer, a 4-piece band featuring a wide variety of classic rock, current rock and alternative progressive music from Dave Mathews to Saturday nights, Wah Wahs features JJ’s Nasty Bastards Band from 6pm to 10pm, again covering 70s, classic rock and country! Genius Kong, a 90s 4- piece hard rock band, On Wednesday Led Zeppelin. On Thursday and On Friday nights, Wah Wahs features from 7 to 10pm. The menu is quite good! Underneath the giant palapa roof is the stage, the dance floor with a table in the middle, and the giant video projection screen for a private event.The food and drink is fabulous and the prices are reasonable!
