We can die happy For the last three days, we’ve been living like rock stars. Literally. We’re at Hacienda Petac, a refurbished sisal plantation 30 miles south of the Yucatan capital city of Merida, where Peter Gabriel once stayed. Tomorrow we’re headed to reality via a bus to the Cancun airport and a flight home. But right now, we’re lying on chaise lounges by the pool, sipping jamaica lemonade, listening to the birds call, and writing the lead to this story. The pool is made to look like a limestone pit, if limestone pits were designed by Ralph Lauren. It’s surrounded by palm trees and flowers and artfully crumbling walls from the glory days of Mexico’s sisal empire. It’s 85 degrees, there’s a soft breeze blowing and we’re posting pictures on Facebook of us lounging in hammocks to torment our friends back home battling the blizzards of 2015 in Virginia. not so easy being a rock star. This is life at Hacienda Petac. Once a Mayan settlement, then a 17th century cattle ranch, then a sisal plantation, then a crumbling wreck, it’s now a restored full-service getaway for the rich and famous or, in our case, the grateful-forthe-kindness-of-strangers-and-scheduling-fluke. Petac can accommodate up to 14 and we piggy-backed onto a group of 10 who came for cooking lessons and relaxation. We arrived via a 40 minute cab-ride from Merida on an afternoon in late February. We were greeted by manager Colleen Leonard at the central fountain with the aforementioned jamaica lemonade (made with hibiscus flowers). Before us were the hacienda’s magical Scheherazade arches and colorful walls; all around were carefully groomed, palm-accented grounds with meandering stone paths. We glance toward the white Moorish arches framing the main house of the hacienda where we will soon be eating another delicious meal on a table painted in intricate designs with flower petals. Not that we’ve been hungry since we arrived. Just a few hours ago we feasted on poblano chili soup, shrimp tacos, fried plantains and mango sorbet for lunch. A young woman in a beautiful embroidered blouse is about to break our reverie. She’s carrying a tray of margaritas. Margarita or more jamaica lemonade? Decisions, decisions. It’s And it only got better from there. Colleen, who was as welcoming as a longlost friend, showed us to the Casa Ramon building and our flower-strewn bedroom (then tried to explain the high-tech walk-in shower, which had so many options it took us a day to figure out the hot water). "Bedroom" doesn’t begin to do justice to where we slept for two nights.
