Report
Newsletter NO.1
Dear Parents.
A new school year is upon us; no doubt it will have its
ups and downs. Be that as it may. I would like to welcome
you all. both parents and boys. new and old. to
the 1978 school year.
At the Mass celebrated by our Archbishop to ask
God's blessing on our Archdiocese's educational efforts
for 1978. I noticed that a paragraph placed In the Mass
booklet as a rellection piece. was a quotation from the
booklet on Catholic Schools. This was produced by the
Sacred Congregation for Catholic Education late last
year under the title "The Catholic SChool". It offers all,
both staff and parents, who are making so many sacrifices
to support our system, much encouragement and
consolation. It is well worth purchasing.
I would like to quote one extract from that document
(p. 22) for your consideration:
" ... because of difficulties In the provision of adequate
staff and finance. In such a situation should the Church
perhaps give up her apostolic mission in Catholic
schools. as some people would like her to do. and direct
her energy to a more direct work of evangelisation in
sectors considered to be of higher priority or more suited
to her spiritual mission, or should she make State schools
the sole object of her pastoral activity? Such a solution
would not only be contrary to the directives of the Vatican
Council. but would also be opposed to the Church's
mission and to what is expected of her by christian
people."
New Staff: I am sure you will join with me in welcoming
the following staff members to the College - Br.
O'Neili from St. Kevin's. Br. Challis from Abbotsford, Br.
Fitzgerald from Treacy College and Br. Smith from Box
Hill. and also the following lay teachers who have joined
our staff this year - Mrs. Cantwell. our new Librarian. Mr.
Colvin, who has returned to us otter a year's study. Mr.
Douglas and Mr. Purchas, who are teaching in the Forms
1and 2 area, Mr. Hollyoak. who isteaching in the Forms 3
and 4 area, Mrs. Hayes and Mr. Dowling, who are teach-
2
ing in the Form 5 area. We also say goodbye to the
following staff members - Br.Chapman. who has been
appointed Headmaster at St. Kilda, Br. Coghlan, who
has also been appointed to St. Kilda, Br. Aron, who will
be doing full-time studies, Br.Jones, who has returned to
his own province of Western Australia; also the following
lay teachers - Miss Tout. Mr. Nieuwenhof and Mr.
McDonald.
Examination Results: The H.S.C. examinations for
1977 were very successful. with 85 out of 108 boys obtaining
their certificate. This Ispretty much the same result as
last year in numerical terms, but of those who did pass
the marks of individual students were much higher, and
this of course means that many more boys this year will
be able to obtain their first choice at University or Senior
Technical Schools. We congratulate all those boys who
have done well, and particularly:
John Love
Peter Bemman
Dux of Science
John Shanahan - Dux of Commerce
Paul Dawson - Dux of Humanities
. It is also important to mention the fact that boys who
did not do well would have also benefited from the year,
and the time spent in 1977 will be a valuable experience
for them. Many of these will eventually end up In the next
year or so with their H.S.C.
Work Experience: Many schools have been taking
part in Work Experience programmes during the last
couple of years and we here at Parade are introducing
our own scheme this year. We hope to start officially in
April.
Newsletter NO.2
For the last five or six weeks we have noticed at our
Sunday Masses the large candle on the sanctuary.
which has been alight during the Holy Sacrifice. This
candle is always placed in such a position from Easter
Sunday until Ascension Thursday. It represents the risen
Christ still on earth. Atter Ascension Day it Isremoved and
we are back in our normal dally routine, going through
the rather long period of time until once again the Easter
ceremonies will be with us.
Like the Church. of which it is part, the school is gradually
moving through its normal yearly process. For example,
you will be receiving the Term I reports very soon,
and most of these will be based on teacher assessment
and tests that Individual teachers have conducted
within their own periods. This assessment will be a
reasonable guide as to how your son is progressing at
the moment.
Future of the Higher School Certificate (Year 12)
Examination: The V.U.S.E.B.(Victorian Universities and
Schools Examination Board) will cease to exist on March
31sl, 1979. The V.U.S.E.B.has conducted the H.S.C. examination,
as we know it, and will conduct that exam for the
last time this year.
A new body, V.l.S.E. [Victorian Institute of Secondary
Education) will replace V.U.S.E.B.as from next year and
will take responsibility for year 12 assessment.
On April 5th, V.l.S.E. released a policy statement on the
future curriculum and assessment for year 12 students,
and the following points from that statement should be
noted:
(a) Timetable - There will be no major changes to
existing assessment procedures (as operating under
V.U.S.E.B.)in 1979 or 1980. The planned new strucfure for
curriculum and assessment will take effect for year 12 in
1981 - when the present year 9 students reach year 12.
(Thus our present year 10 and 11students will face H.S.C.
assessment in the form we have traditionally known,)
(bJ Basic Scheme - The new scheme (as from 1981)
will allow for two groups of subjects: (a) group 1subjects
which initially will be the existing subjects offered in the
H,S,C.,(b) group 2 subjects which will be totally devised
and assessed within the school.
Students will continue to study five subjects (in broad
terms) which can consist of any combination of group 1
and group 2 subjects, e,g" Four group 1 subjects and
one group 2; or no group 1 and five group 2.
(c) Units - To allow for further ftexibility, courses of
study will be sub-divided into UNITS.An element of study
of one term's duration istermed a unit. Thusmost year 12
students will undertake a course of 15 units (which is
equivalent to 5 subjects).
It is emphasised that the pattern to be adopted by
VISEfrom 1981has been sketched inbroad outline, Much
detailed work and careful negotiation has yet to be
undertaken. An example of an unresolved issue is the
time at which examinations in Group 1 subjects should
be held. The possibility of holding these examinations in
the last weeks of the second school term deserves investigation.
Another matter requiring resolution Is whether
English,as a subject or as a core, should be compulsory
for all year 12 students.
Parade Welcomes New Associated Catholic
College: Parade College Is a member of the Associated
Catholic Colleges, a group of nine Catholic
schools. We have much pleasure In welcoming a tenth
school, St.Paul's Altona, into our group as from Athletic
Season In 1978,
Associated Catholic Colleges - Sportln", Activities:
TheAssociation runstwo types of competitions:
"Official" - This means that a member school must
compete as on the date of the fixture. A school cannot
decide to withdraw from an official sport.
The Official sports are football, soccer, cricket. athletics,
cross-country and swimming.
"Unofficial" - At the start of the season a member
school can nominate if it wishes to compete in the particular
year.
The Unofficial sports are other than those mentioned
as official.
School Policy with Regards to Sport: The school's
policy with regards to the participation of your son isthat
if he isneeded for an official sport, he mustmake himself
available both to practise and to play.
During Term 2 we are committed to Wednesday fixturesfor
some football teams. Thismeans that some Form
3 and 4 footballers and a few soccer players have to be
out of school on a Wednesday afternoon. The internal
school arrangement that has caused thiswas not made
lightly. These boys are usually required to study on the
Form3 and 4 sportsday. On one or two occasions Ihave
prevented a boy from playing on the Wednesday. The
decision. if it needs to be made, of playing or not playing
in these special cases is finally the Headmaster's.
School Camps: Three weeks ago the Forms3 and 4
camps were held at Santa Monica. which isa very lovely
spot - about eight miles from lorne. At these camps the
staff were fortunate to have a number of fathers -
Messrs.Bernie Branagan, Ernie Ellul.Kevin Busch.Trevor
Smith. Bernie Spence. Greg Dunlop and Kevin Gronow.
to whom we are extremely grateful for all their help inthe
cooking area. in particular. and for supervision in general.
It appears that the camps were successful in accomplishing
what they set out to do, and we hope that
the final camp for these classes. to be held in Term3. will
be blessed with the same good weather they had in
3
Term1.Forms1and 2 will be having camps inTerm2. and
these will take the form of a parallel school situation and
will be held at E.R.C.More will be communicated to the
parents concerned early next term.
At the present time the Form 6 boys are away on
Retreats. one group is at lake Eppaloch. another at
Phillip Island and a third at Dayiesford. We hope that the
boys are able to avail of the spiritual helps given during
these three very important days, The same hopes are
extended to the Form 5's who are on similar Retreats.
which are taking place at the school itself. at Edmund
Rice College and at lower Plenty.
Congratulations are Due to the tollowlng: Our
U/18 Basketball team (Captain Brendan Prendergast).
our U/16 team (Captain Jamie Kennedy), Both won
premierships last Saturday. and well done to the U/14
team (Captain Paul Conway) who were runners up.
Praiseis also due to our U/13 Tennisteam (Captain Paul
Liccione) who were our only tennis group to play infinals.
Individual congratuiations go to Chris and Andrew
Fenech, who won selection in the Victorian Water Polo
U/18 side. and Chris has had the distinction of being
selected in the Australian side to play Japan later this
year.
In the past. Victorian Under 16 Australian Rules Football
sides have been selected from State Schools. This
has changed this year. Although the final team will not
be seiected until the end of the holidays. Parade sent
five boys fortrials and the five - Anthony Canavan. Terry
Twomey. Steven Hall. Noel Gilmore and Vin Hanlon -
have all reached the final thirty. and we hope they
survive the next and final cut-off. .
Many thanks to Forms I and II, who took part In the
Bundoora Community Aid Abroad Walk against Want
and raised $518for that worthy cause.
Newsletter NO.3
late in June all Brothers'Schools celebrate a special
feast. the Feastof Our lady of Perpetuai Help, ThisIiIle of
Our lady has always had special veneration in Brothers'
Schools. because early in the Brothers'historywhen our
Founder. Brother Rice. was still alive. it did appear that
perhaps the work he had so far done would fall away.
Brother Rice's brother had been to Rome and had seen
the original picture of Our lady of Perpetual Help and
had suggested that BrotherRice pray to Our lady under
thistitle. He did this. making a promise at the same time
that. if the probiems were overcome, in all our schools
the Brotherswould give this picture an honoured place.
The troubles were overcome and Brother Rice kept his
promise. in a few days. when I move to Rome to undertake
the course that I have to do. I intend to visit this
church in order to say some prayers before this picture.
This is something that i have wanted to do. but never
thought that I would be in a position to accomplish.
All parents are to be commended for their efforts
during the month of June. looking at the Calendar it was
amazing to me how full it was. with functions on continuously.
I suppose I should not have been amazed. because
Iwas part of the Committee that sat and planned
the events in order to space them as much as possible.
However. on behalf of the Brothersand staff. I thank all
those parents who did magnificently. because we all
realize that a great many of you have other schools to
cover besides Parade College.
Many thanks to the Fathers' Committee under the
leadership of Mr. John Giddens. but with special mention
to Mr. Barney luby for his tremendous efforts in or-
ganizlng this function and the Dance that went with it.
790 tickets were sold and the Fathershave been able to
give a cheque for well over S2,000each to both Parade,
Bundoora, and Parade, Alphington.
Working Bee: Last year our Working Bee in the middle
of the year was dogged by bad weather and not
much could be done outside. Thisyear the weather was
not much better, but the amount of work done was
amazing. On the Monday after the Working Bee, I
noticed many staff and boys looking at the changes that
had been brought about by the hard-working Fathers
and the many boys who helped them. The main area of
work was in laying down and upgrading paths, and thi~
required a large number of men. A complete horses
yard was built in the afternoon, as well as an entlfe
playground laid out and gravelled at Edmund Rice
College, for our junior boys. Many thanks to. all those
fathers who came. Special thanks to the organisers, particularly
Mr. Max Synan.
Affairs In the College: .,.
1. Our Work Experience Programme ISnow In function
and boys are taking part in thisunder the main direction
of Mr.TerryHollyoak, who has put a tremendous amount
of work, other than his normal school work, into ensuring
itssuccess. On your behalf, and on behalf of the boys, I
would like to publicly thank him for this,
2. TheForm1and 2'shave moved up to Edmund Rice.
They had a very muddy baptism in that area, but things
are much better now and at the moment these boys are
completing their school camps under a parallel school
situation. This means that they go to school as normal
from 9,00 to 3.30 dressed in their normal school uniform,
and then have recreation, night study and prayers during
the rest of the evening. I was in charge of the two
Form2 camps and Iwas very impressed by the standard
of co-operation of the boys, Itmust be terribly embarrassing
to you at home to be continually able to sit down
and not to worry about doing the washing-up or dryingup,
or to have your son insist that he would ciean his
room. However, the boys were doing these things without
much prompting from me, and it made both camps very
pieasant. Congratulations to all parents of Form2, and I
am sure that Brother Wynne and Mr. Douglas will have
the same experience as myself with the Form 1 boys,
Congratulations to Peter Conroy (H.S.C.).who partici:
pated in the Interlocutor Debating SOCiety,Schools
Single Competition. Peter reached the grand final Inthe
Open Division.
Congratulations to Chris Fenech who is leaving for
overseas soon with the Australian Junior Water Polo
Team for a series of International matches.
Inter-School Sport - With five competition games
completed, and four remaining, both Parade football
teams are undefeated. In the senior area the premiership
appears to be a two-way contest between Parade
and St.Bede's Mentone. Theseschools meet at Parade
2.00 p.m. July 26th. Pundits agree that the result of this
game will decide the flag. In the junior area things are
pretty much the same. Itwill be Parade or Mentone. Iam
sure you join with me in wishing all our teams every
success for the rest of the season.
Absence of the Headmaster Overseas.
During the absence of the Headmaster overseas. all
enquiries should be directed to the Deputy Headmaster.
Br. Swaney. who will be administering Parade for this
period. I am sure that BrotherSwaney will find the tasks,
as I have. made easy by the co-operation of all con-
4
nected with the College.
The Headmaster will be returning to Melbourne on
January 16th.1979. . .
Finally I would take this final opportunity of wlshrng
one and' all every health and blessing for the remaining
months of 1978.
Yourssincerely in Christ.
A.C.C. Carnival: Friday. 13thOctober. saw the College
participate in the Associated Catholic Colleges
Athletics Meeting. The boys had been well prepared.
thanks to the painstaking effort of the coaches. Bylunch
time Parade were clearly in the lead, Thismade the day
interesting for the large body of boys who attended. and
it was only In the latter part of the afternoon that De La
Salle. Malvern. reached the front by their many wins in
the sprint events, Parade finished fifth, However. there
was only a lO-point margin between second place and
of the team. including the reserves,
Art Show: Once again the Annual Art Show was a big
success, due to the untiring efforts of the Art Committee
followed the inspiring address of John Barrack,
Developments: The external walls of the Squash
Court are almost completed. After a long lapse they
should be ready for Brother Wright's return,
Swimming Pool: Concreting and heating installations
have been finalized and the cover over the pool
should be In position by late November, This will add
considerably to the school's facilities in the physical
education area, as the pool can be used throughout the
year,
Developments: The new oval has been surveyed
and levelled and is at the moment awaiting top soil. It
has been fully drained and reticulated and a wind
break has been planted, It will possibly be completed
next year,
I would like to take this opportunity of wishing your
families every blessing for the coming season of Christmas,
My greatest regret after having served my time at
Parade Isthat when Ifinally realized that Ienjoyed being
there I no longer had the time to do so. Inearlier years at
Parade the term "School Spirit" was thrown around so
much by members of staff and by successive College
Captains that Igrew weary of hearing It.I know now that
one can only appreciate "School Spirit" when one
reaches H.S.C.A strong bond has developed among
members of this H.S.C.class, a bond that hopefully will
continue throughout our lives,
Sporting-wise, 1978was a successful year for Parade.
TheCricket 1stXIcruised undefeated through the season
for an easy victory in the ACC competition. the Athletics
saw Parade lead for half the day only to falter in the
sprintsand the Football 1stXVIIIremained unbeaten until
the final two games. Hockey took off at Parade thisyear,
in porticular the Senior XI enjoyed a memorable social
and competitive season. On behalf of the students involved
I would like to thank the coaches of the senior
sporting feams - Br. O'Neill, Mr, Joss, Mr. Hughes, Mr.
Pyrgos, Br, Fitzgerald and others. I would like to pay
special tribute to Mr.Bruce Walsh for hisuntiring contribution
to the organization of seniorsport at Parade over the
last two years.
I would like to express my gratitude to the teachers
who persevered with usduring our development. Iwould
also like fa thank the ladies In fhe Office, the Ladies'
Auxiliary for their support during the year, and the
mothers who provided their invaluable services in the
running of the canteen.
Theonly thing left to be said issimply. that Iwas proud
to have been a member of the H.S.C.class of 1978 at
Parade.
V ALE - REVENI
To a school. each year brings something ofa triumph,
and something sad. ForParade, the year brings the sad
news of Brother Moloney's transfer, He is going - to be
Senior Moths. teacher at SI.Kevin's.
We feel that it isn'tcredibie, though we know it istrue.
May the boys and staff of 78 express something of their
sense of loss?
When Parade moved from its ancesfral home, the
"break" was felt by all Paradians. Thistransfer is much
like fhaf: for nearly 30 years WP.M. has been Parade's
feacher of SeniorChrisfian Doctrine, SeniorMathematics
and SportsMaster, indeed, somefhing of fhe cragginess,
10
fhe solidity, and fhe unbowed character of the Blue
StonePiledistinguisheshim yet. Surely,30 years - almost
a third of the School's history - musf give him an embedded
place therein. How can we measure his contribufions
of blood and spirif fa this piace - "not made
wifh hands'"
In searching for a tribufe to match the man, the service,
the loss,we can only offer the simple eloquence
that nations usewhen they assemble ten thousand crossesIn
rows, simple and white. They make a geometry of
thanks and praise - like the ten thousand days of thirty
Art
Over the past one and a half years, Parade College
has been establishing Its Art/Craft Department with a
view to broadening the spectrum of education available
to its students,
As the current Art staff at the College, we have carefully
noted the amount of enthusiasm shown by the Junior
students presently undertaking the course and are
pleased by the many encouraging results.Stillbeing In
its formative years the extent of the subject is understandably
hampered by limited equipment and space,
However, the recently completed art room has set the
basis for Ideal accommodation for such a subject, Inthe
future, our efforts will be concentrated in the area of
gradually attaining the equipment necessary to provide
students with a greater range of activities, Some of the
areas that may be developed are basic photography,
advanced printmaking, textile crafts and sculpture.
The nature of the art / craft course isequivalent to that
of any other subject available at the school. By this we
mean that basic Instructionat Junior levels Inthe areas of
drawing, painting, simple printmaking and elementary
three dimensional forms Isabsolutely essential. The abil-
Ity of any student to confidently and honestly express his
ideas by use of art forms dependS almost solely on his
practice and complete understanding of the basic
techniques involved.
The aim of the course Isto stimulate the creative Imagination
of the pupil and to develop his sense of
awareness In every day life through visual aesthetics. At
the same time we are seeking to provide an avenue for
personal expression, and for him to experience a sense
of discovery when confronted with varied materials. The
course is organised so that the students are able to
develop an Interestinthose aspects which will assisttheir
formal and informal studies in future years.
Next year the Art/Craft course will be extended to
Form4 level. Presently,It isa compulsory subject for Form
1to 3 inclusive, but will be offered as an elective In Form
4. Dependent upon the interest and enthusiasm of these
students, It can be assumed that Art and Craft will
gradually become a final year subject. Judging by present
standards, the development of study in this area
should provide something to which we can look forward.
Woodwork
Thisyear saw the craft of Woodwork introduced as a
subject for Forms3 and 4. It has been a successand has
proved to be extremely popular with all the classes
concemed.
The boys had to work under anything but ideal condItions
for the firstterm while the old bike sheds and storeroom
were being transformed into a work-room. The
completion of the project has provided us with a well
equipped environment In which the boys can go about
acquiring a new set of skills.
The rationale behind the establishment of a woodwork
class was to give the students the opportunity of
producing something practical with the co-ordination of
mind and hands. In a school of high academic ambitions,
thissubject was seen as an opportunity to give the
boys a useful craft, as well as a respite from the high
concentration of study.
The aims of Woodwork are to show the student the
many benefits that working with wood can offer, in porticular,
the ability to use correctly and safely the various
tools and equipment associated with this craft. The student
will see the inter-relationships with the other subjects
we will be introducing and by working on projects of
increasing difficulty, he will be able to porticlpate in
practical work outside of school, such as in the home.
The future is not limited just to Woodwork. In due
course, we hope to Introduce basic metal-work, electrical
and other practical areas.
An introduction to Welding has commenced for Form
4 Students with a brief outline to the metal-work area.
As well as working on their nomnal class u;slgnments,
the students have responded enthusiastically to the various
projects given them around the school: finishing off
the work-room, a table for the Brothers' dining room,
construction of a saddle shed, mending seats in the
sports areas, and our latest effort a yacht. which we
hope will be the vanguard of a sailing fleet for sports
days.
If the enthusiasm of the students to Woodwork and
practical subjects isany Indication of itspopularity and
necessity in today's world, then the decision to establish
it at Parade has been more than justified.
Parade began the season well with an outright win
over North Melboume and continued the season by
winning two of the four remaining games. Unfortunately
the chances of Parade winning a premiership were
ruined when the game against Chadstone was washed
out and the game against Essendonwas lost in a close
struggle.
The most consistent pertormances in the batting were
displayed by Tony Corcoran and Vin Hanlon whiist
Gregor all bowled well.
Thanksmust go to TonyCanayan. who captained the
side, all the players who were faithfui to training and to
Renata Bartolomei for his scoring.
Eventhough the team did not win a premiership there
isplenty of talent in the team - no doubt many of these
players will go on to the FirstXI in the 1978-79season.

The Junior SChool's enthusiasm for all sports showed up
early In the year when Parade were able to field 3
separate Under 13 cricket teams. Unfortunately enthusiasm
alone does not always decide the winning
teams. Although there were a number of notable batting
successes, in all three teams it was the bowling department
which proved our downfall. Special mention must
go to the following:
ADAM POWICK - 33 runs against Aiphington. Adam
finished the competition with an average of 96 runs after
losing his wicket only once in the season.
Football
First XVIII
It was not anticipated by some that the Parade First
XVIII would be a great force in the A.C.G. competition.
Yet after Round 7. having won every game. we were
ready to virtually play 51.Bede's for the Premiership.
A good number tumed up for the early training runs.
and some promising footballers began to stand oul. Our
firstpractice match very eerly Inthe seeson. was played
against Marceliin. who defeated us soundiy. We then
played Rostrevor College. Adelaide. and that is when
we knew we had the makings of a good team. Down at
3/4 time. Parade bounced back to snatch victory by 1
goal In a very high standard match.
A game against ReservoirHigh ended in an eQsywin
to Parade. Xavier. however. proved to be a very different
story.Playing durtng the holidays. with a weekened
team. Parade matched the strong opposition for most of
the game. but Xavier was too strong inthe finish. We won
well against 51.Leo's. Box Hili. but did not have it all our
own way. The last practice match was against 51.Paul's
Altona. and that ended in a convincing win. Our preseason
build-up proved quite adequate and encouraging
for our first competition match against North.
Round 1. In very weI condilions Parade apd North
slogged away in a low-scoring game. Parade was
down by 14 poinls wilh nve minutes to go. when we
suddenly snapped two quick goals. Theball was rushed
forward and Mick Flynnsnapped an impossible goal to
give us victory on the bell.
Round 2. Braybrook did not put up much opposition.
and Parade kicked 12goals to nil In the firstquarter. The
game levelled off a little. but Parade displayed some
good teamwork later on.
Round 3. We were expecting a harder game this
time. and EastBrunswickmatched usby keenly competing
at every chance in the firstquarter. Parade's strength
began to tell. and resistance crumbled in the remaining
three quarters.
Round 4. Parade met a very small, but extremely determined
side at Essendon. The ground was very ~et.
and goals hard to score, Parade jumped the oPPOSition
in the 1st quarter, and this was to be the decisive influence,
The rest of the game was a grim battle with Essendon
doing a lot of attacking.
Round 5. On a drier ground, Parade used to advantage
its skill in teamwork and play-on football. The result
was a consistent game in which Parade did not lose
concentration at any stage, and kicked at least five
goals each quarter,
Round 6. De La Salle always provides stiff opposition,
and this game was no exception, Parade's bad
kicking early in the game did not allow us to break away
early, but a strong second quarter showed our dominance.
Round 7. After six successive wins, the competition
saw Parade and St. Bede's the only unbeaten teams.
Players were very keyed up for this one, as we were
about to play oft for the premiership - a remarkable
achievement for this fine Parade side who were not
considered to be a force in 1978, It was a tight game,
played at great pace and pressure. St. Bede's were 6
pelnts in front at half time, and neither side was giving an
inch. The third quarter was the key, because 51.Bede's
got the break. Parade levelled the scores early in the
quarter, but then St. Bede's kicked 3 quick goals, and
then bottled us up in the last quarter. Congratulations to
the Premiers, St, Bede's.
Round 8: The Parade team suffered a let-down after
the big clash, and could not raise the necessary enthusiasm
to defeat St. Kilda. We could not take advantage
of the strong breeze, and despite a third quarter
revival which regained us the lead, we were overrun by
a young, fast and most impressive St, Kilda side, This loss
meant that we were to only share second place for 1978,
The retum of Shane McCarthy [1978 Captain] made a
significant difference to the side, He proved an excellent
leader and inspired the team with his rugged ploy.
Vice-captain Dale McCann was an outstanding
centre-half back, and did not produce a bad game,
Deputy Vice-captain, Peter Bentley came back after
injury to be a tenacious player on the wing.
Peter Wood gave away inches at centre half forward
but tumed in some fine performances. Paul Ryan was a
dashing half-back flanker and teamed very well with
Dale McCann, Mark Backway was a good solid defender
all year, Chris Ray often steadied the side from full
back; Chris Gilmore was a consistently good winger;
Brendan L'Huillier was capable of inspired football at
times; Michael Munday was very handy around the
goals; Mick Flynn was a useful tap-ruckman who always
got his kick in; Ron Deylon improved greatly through the
season to become a reliable back man,
The Form Five contingent was very strong, and will
form a strong nucleus for 1979, MfJrk Lawson was a clever
centreman who used his strength; Terry McGough
proved to be an intelligent ruck-rover and won many
kicks; Phil Hammond saved time after time from the
back pecket; Frank Gleeson roved well all year; Jeft
Breeding played very well when on the ball; Steven
Smith was a great half forward; Jim Madden was a
handy rover; Anthony Barry showed talent at times.
Other players who contributed to the team's success
were Simon Purcell, Ian Wheeler, Alex Morelli and
Michael O'Hara. Thanks to our officials for their hard
work; Tony Todaro (Manager) Michael Love (Runner),
Kevin Jemmeson (Boundary) and Greg Nance (Goal
umpire).
Thanks perticularly to the ladies who provided refreshments
after the home games.
1978 was basically a successful year for the Junior
XVIII. The side. led by Teny Twomey. was undefeated
until the second last round, when they went down in a
hard fought game to the eventual premiers, Sf. Bedes,
inthe practice matches Parade did not showtheir true
form but performed better to succeed in the Ae.e.
matches,
Throughout the year there was not one player who
didn't contribute something. Up forward, Murray Dinan
was the focal point of the attack and what he missed
was ably snapped up by TonyCorcoran who was lead-
Ing goal kicker for the year. The strong marking of Beers
and Flynn also proved a headache for opposing
backmen.
At the centre bounces the combination of Wenkowskl,
Twomey, Wood and Canavan got the ball down to the
scouting rovers In Salmon, Wilson and Gilmore.
These players were backed up by a strong defence
led by centre half-back Steven Hall.Theease with which
Vln Hanlon went about hisjob in the back pocket bamboozled
many opposing rovers.Thereliability of Stuckey
and Lotan was reassuring to their team-mates as well.
Overall, Parade was runner-up to St.Bedes, who were
probably the better team. Therewere many players who
have not been mentioned who contributed greatly
throughout the year and a lot of credit must go to Mr.
The team is quite satisfied at finishing third on the
ladder this year considering the players varied from
week to week. This was due to many players proving
themselves and being given the opportunity to play with
the Senior side. Obtaining third place with these constant
changes of players showed that the team had the
abiilty to adapt and stiilpresent a fine exhibition of team
work on most occasions.
Many times it was due to formidable backline of M.
O'Hara, A. Boffa, P.Taylor and D.Woodruff that we were
able to tum from defence to attack. Strong marking and
dashing play by these players, ably supported by N.
O'Sullivan, M. Fleming and B. Mullane, enabled us to
drive the ball deep Into the forward line through the
agency of our most capable centreline of L. Smyth, M.
Pegararo, L. Dynes and D. Spillane.
Our teamwork was rewarded with the accurate kicking
of R.Schuyler, J. Viero, F.Palamara, S.Gleeson and
M. Foster. Everyone's task was made easier with the
height of our rucks M. Lane, S. Watson and D. Bibby
combined with the speed and agiiity of our numerous
rovers, C. Jackson, S. Barry and R.Kontos.
We were constantiy pulled out of the depths of
despair by the humorous optimism of our coach Mr.
Cosgriff; unfortunately In a couple of games our comeback
started too late. B.Barnes,J. Moroney and M. Pelly
should also be mentioned as giving consistent performances.
In terms of results, one might be Inclined to be discouraged
at the season put in by the Under Thirteen
footballers. However, the efforts of the boys were most
satisfactory. Physical size is a dominant factor In Junior
football and the boys Invariably found themselves outsized.
In spite of this, the quality of football produced
was, on occasions, outstanding. Under adverse conditions.
the boys always obeyed Instructionsand always
gave of their best. A coach cannot ask more of his
players than this.
The Agony and the Ecstasy-
The Under Thirteen B Football Team moved off to a
slow start this season with four consecutive losses. It was
small relief to recognise that we were up against the
toughest opposition early In the season. However, the
drought was broken with an Infusion of new blood into
the team through the season and a 5 goals 8 points
resultant draw with De La Salle. The agony was over! In
the next five matches we registered four glorious
triumphs, with the most heartening and splendiferous
conquest being over Alphlngton. The team was Instructed
at three-quarter time to score in every minute in
the last quarter, and their obedience was abundant. The
transition from agony to ecstasy was rampantly
exemplified by the six goal loss to St. Kllda in the first
match and the subsequent two goal victory over them In
the last confrontation of the season. Many thanks to all
those concerned with this encouraging start to many
football careers. Special thanks go to the parents who
lent their suppor!, and also to the umpire, John
McDonald, who performed a thankless task. Bestwishes
gc to the players for the rest of their football lives.
A.C.C. SOCCER
Thisyear's season was the second yeer ot competition
within the A.e.C. It proved successful from the point of
view that the Saccer XI established itself as one of the
forerunners of success within the A.e.e. competition,
Although we finished third, it was a most rewarding
and enjoyable season.
Most gratitying for the teem was the interestdisplayed
by the Junior School in our home games and in the
training for the 1stand 2nd XIteams. Many thanks to Mr.J.
Pyrgosfor the many hard hours and ceaseless attention
he lavished upon the team.
Congratulations to St.Kilda for winning the competition.
1. GREG BUSCH: Although he suffered from "acute
shortness",he proved to be an essential part of the
team.
2. MICHAEL CUMMINS: Unfortunately plagued by Injury
during the seeson; however, when called upon
he always performed well.
3. MICK EPIFANO: The most consistent and steady
player upon the field - despite a slight mishap,
Michael formed an important part in the backbone
of the defence,
4. ROSS ITALIANO: A late acquisition to the team - he
was an extremely solid and reliable defender.
5, PAUL CONNELL: One of the stronger players In the
teem - he provided the most service to the team;
his anticipation of the play proved invaluable on
several occasions.
6. JOHN MONTEMURRO (Captain): He provided
guidance and advice at all times, The teem often
relied upon his judgement to get them through a
hard game,
7. CHRIS RYAN: An unpredictable player who
showed flashes of brilliance. For every goal he
scored he just missed about 4 others.
8. ROCCO PARADISO: Has tremendous potential -
he will develop into a fine player if hisperformances
of this year continue.
9. ROBERT WEGNER: He performed consistently well,
scoring some brilliant goals during the season, His
speed and agility will make him the focal point of
next year's team.
10. STEVECASHEN: Hasan Inbuilt ability to score goals
- he is hampered only by his height. He will be an
important part of next yeer's team.
11.GIANNI CAMPOBASSI: A very skilful mid-fielder
who played an important part in directing the flow of
play throughout the season,
12, VAUGHAN BEAN: Our central striker - a vital link in
the team who acted as the centre of attack, continually
harassing the defence - a fine player.
13. MARK MACDONALD: Theyoungest member of the
teem who displays tremendous skillsanci ;Jotentlal.
However, sometimes his aggression would be more
fitting on a football field.
14, GABRIEL GENNAI: The continually complaining,
never compromising member ofthe team. However,
he proved to be a solid utility player. An especially
good performance was his game against St.Kilda,
the last game.
15. JOHN SMOLKA: Heplayed a numberof games and
when called upon he performed admirably. Hewas
a fine example of a player who does his best but
doesn't complain if he does not get a game.
Second XI Soccer
The Second Eleven had quite a successful season, Of
our eight games, we won five and drew one. The team
performed very well Indefeat, too, especially incontaining
the unbeaten Altona to two goals.
The role of Captain was reliably filled by Shoun
O'Neill, with Kelvin Raywood as his deputy, These two
provided effective leadership both on and off the field.
The whole squad is to be commended for the sustained
interestand enthusiasm it showed throughout the
season, Although each game produced one or two
outstanding players, the overall result of third on the
ladder isdue to the consistent effortsof each member of
the squad.
the pleasure of coaching them at Olympic Pool In the
they had put In, (Some senior boys, I hope, will take
notice of the Juniors' attitude towards training,)
Congratulations for the Juvenile Cup must also go to
Ion Bibby and Mark Johnston for all their time and effort,
The Parade team trained at TryBoysYouth Club and
although the pool wasn't very wide (only three lanes) It
proved to be an excellent training venue for most boys,
Training started at 7 a,m, and went through until 8,15
Athletics
It is some years now since a HouseAthletic Sportshas
been held at Parade. In its place we have now introduced
inter-room carnivals and decathlons. These engender
a good deal of interest and enthusiasm. They
also promote a sense of unity, and offer an opportunity
for students to develop leadership qualities.
Information gained from these activities helped in
selecting athletes for the training squad. Unfortunately it
was the end of second term before anything more was
done toward preparing the team for the AC.C. Carnival.
The resultsof this year's decathlons were
Interstate Athletic Carnival
At the Instigation of Brother Greening, a Christian
the last weekend of September. The meet was held at
the National Athletic Stadium in Canberra. The schools
involved were - St.Patnck's College, Goulburn, St.Patnck's
College, Strathfield, St. Edmund's College Canberra
and of course, Parade; unfortunately St. Kevin's
College Toorak had to withdraw Inthe week prior to the
meet.
We traveiled by bus, departing early Thursday morn.
ing (Showday) and returning mid-morning Sunday.
While in Canberra we stayed at UrsulaCollege at the
Australian National University.Thetrip was a tremendous
success. Everyone who went is eagerly looking forward
to next year's. I must thank Michael McLaughlin, Secretary
of the Old Paradians Athletic Club, who came along
to help Brother Challis and myself,
Unfortunately. due to October tests, only two H.S.C.
students were able to make the trip. Nevertheless, our
overail performance was very good, particularly in the
distance events and field events. Our first place gelters
were: D. McCann (800); P. Wood (400); S. Kos (800): J.
Members of the athletic squad participated in four
other warm-up meets in preparation for the Ae.e. Carnival.
These were at Aberfeldie, Glenhuntly, Fawkner
and BoxHill.Thelast of these was conducted by Parade.
A,C,C. Athletic Carnival
As was indicated at the preliminary meets, the distance
and field events were to be our strong points. A
number of early wins in these put us at the top of the
progressive totals, and meant that excitement was high
in the Parade camp. It was weil into the afternoon's
program before we slipped down the ladder to finishup
in fifth place out of the ten coileges. Eventhen we were
only twenty points off second place.
Cross Country
Our most outstanding performer in this year's A.C.C.
Cross-Country was DAMIAN BRASIER.who won his age
group for the third consecutive year. With ninety runners
in each age group. it is a very good effort to make the
top ten. Those who achieved this were D. McCANN, G.
MANDiLE, R. WEGNER, M. SMiTH. S. McCORMACK, C.
LAWSON, G. BARNES and C. GLASL.
These efforts and the all-round depth of talent helped
Parade take off third place, nearly 500 points clear of
the fourth team.
Cross-Country champions for 1978 are: -
Senior: Dale McCann
Under 17: Damian Brasier
Under 16: Craig Lawson
Under 15: Shaun McCormack
Under 14: Craig Sexton
Hockey
Thisyear Parade fielded (for the firsttime ever) hockey
teams. Theyplayed inthe Independent School's Hockey
Association. and met with a fair amount of success. The
most slgnifcant point though was that hockey provided
the means for quite a number of boys to represent the
College. whereas without it. they would not have had
such an opportunity. Overall we had some 60 boys playing
the game for the school. Besidesplaying the game.
there was the opportunity for coaching. In this we were
indebted to Mr. Doug Stewart of the Greensborough
club. who not only gave up much of his time to coach
and umpire. but also arranged for players such as Jim
Irgine. vice-captain of the Australian team to give demonstrations
to the teams.
At the conclusion of the season a presentation night
was held and the following awards were made:
Best. Fairest BestTeam Man MostImproved
Open Shoun O'Neill John Smolka Brendan Harrison
U16 Corio Contebaro Stephen Murphy Brendan Meese
U15 Greg Busch Stephen Foster Joseph Dunlop
Ul4 Brendan Ryan Ricky Theunissen Paul Yammouni
Finally a word of thanks should go to all the parents
who helped in many capacities throughout the season.
especially with the transportation of teams to places as
far afield as Mt. Eliza and Geelong.
Opens - The opens fared particularly well against
opponents with far more experience. Undaunted by this
they set about each game with a rare style of enthusiasm
that marked their play with unique eamestness
- a fact not loston our opponents or their supporters. The
attack was iead by Shaun O'Neill vice-captain and
chief goal scorer. He was ably supported by captain
John Smolka along with Peter Wilson. John Viero. Kelvin
Raywood and T."Keve" Stone.Theredoubtable half line
centred around the volatile Mark O'Connor. flanked by
stalwarts Brendan Harrisonand P."Paddy" Connel. At full
back was the hard hitting Rob Bakkersand Mark Neal.
Edi Petehand Damian Cosgriff shared the machinations
as goalies. The Opens finished third on the ladder.
Under 16'5 - Theteam that took all before them after
coming from nowhere. After quite a deal of bad luck.
the team developed into a very skilful side who produced
some dazzling displays of teamwork. all of which
augurs well for next season. Full credit for the rennaisance
must go to Mr. Gronow who took over as coach
during the season. Captain and forward was Carlo Contebaro.
He was supported by Michael Barker. a goal
sneak who had the unerring knack of being at the right
place at the right time. Other forwards were Brendan
Meese. Paul Guest and Tom Anderson. The half line got
plenty of work but Michael Gronow. David Gillingham
and TonyFitzpatrick were more than equal to it.We were
indeed fortunate to have the hard hitting Steve Murphy
at full back along with PeterCooper and George Bakos.
Marc Addicoat did a stirlingjob in goals. The Under 16's
ended up second on the ladder. and had there been a
trophy for most improved side. they would have won it
hands down.
Under 15'5 - In many ways a history-making side!
Our firstpremiership hockey side (and in their firstseason
too) and the first Paradian to score a goal for his school
_ Gerard Buykx.just happened to be in thisside. Stillthe
side deselVed all the success it gol. Itplayed consistently
well. being undefeated in competition games and in
fact conceding only one goal for the season.
Fullcredit must go to the skilful and inspirational play
of Greg Buschwho was assisted in attack by the mercurial
Gerard Buykx.the consistent Mauro Gentile and redoubtable
trio of Joe Dunlop. Adrian Maiolla and Tony
Doolan. The very tight half line consisted of Mlck Vangyzel.
the hard running Steve Smithand Steve Foster.Full
Backs were Matt Theunissenand Eric Hormann. Last but
definitely not least was goalie Mick laccabucci who
received many admiring accolades from both supporters
and opposition for his daring saves. A side who
thoroughly deselVed their championship.
Under 14'5 - Our junior side was blighted with bad
luck all season. Starting off in brilliant form. they were
regraded into a position where most of the team were
playing a year above their age. Stillthey put up a very
game performance - besides seeing a good deal of
the countryside as they toured from MI. Elizato Geelong
in search of foes! Again we were lucky to have a player
of great skill leading this side - Brendan Ryan. who
unlike most others had played the game before. Others
in the attack included the indefatigable Rick Theunlssen
and John Kolenda. who on his day was unsurpassable.
Paul Hayes. Andrew Prest and Stephen Lloyd also
played well in attack. The half line consisted of Paul
O'Connor. Nev. Kerr.Adrian Nugent. Brendan Hyde and
Peter Vangyzel. Full backs Angelo D'Amore and Paul
Yammouni proved more than a handful for most opponents.
Luc Addicoat backed up the team with a good
season in goa Is.
The under 14'scame fourth this year. and hopefully
with a more settled season. should do better next year.
LOOkingto next season. we are hoping to field as
many teams again. with the hope of also forming an Old
Boys'team. based on thisyear's Open side. but naturally
open to anybody
interested in playing.
Volleyball
Volleyball was introduoed to Parade through Physioal
Education classes and it was tram the interest developed
there that three school teams were tormed.
The regional oompetition was held at Heidelberg
YMCA for Division 1 teams, Montmorency High for Division
2 and Heidelberg Teoh. for Division 3 teams.
Parade had entered one team in Division 1 and although
the initial skill level of the team was below standard
it quickly improved, mainly due to the excellent
oompetition. Theteam consisted of Brian Barnes,Robert
Wegner, Aida Basile, Anthony Scully, Paul O'Connell.
Stephen Fahey, Stephen Ispanovlc and Anthony Farrell.
The team finished second last, but the boys should be
very proud of their efforts, particularly in view of the fact
that they took sets off both teams that played in the
Grand Final.
The real excitment came inthe two teams in Division3.
Both teams won through to playoff in the Grand Final
and the improvement in skill level was remarkable over
57
the last 3 weeks of competition.
KurtElder'steam, Parade 1,were the favourites, but it
was Michael Neison's Parade 2 which took out the first
set 15-13. Parade 1 fought back to take the next two sets
15-2, 15-3 and the game looked to be all over. Some
quick adjustments to the team iine-up saw Parade 2
fight back to take the fourth set 15-2 and the scene was
set for the final and deciding set.
At 10 all In the final set it was still anyone's game;
however, a last minute spirited display by Nelson and his
team saw them become Division 3 Champions by taking
the set 15-12.
Debating
FORMS 5 AND 6
Despite the strong Parade tradition of debating. the
school was not involved in any formal inter-school competition
in 1977. At the start of 1978, however, the Debating
Association of Victoria invited usto take part In their
competition, and an appeai to the students produ~ed a
strong and enthusiastic response. As in all such activIties,
there was not a place for everybody who tried auf, and
the final teams consisted of Peter Conroy (Capt), Mark
Neal, PeterWilson, and for the iast debate of the season,
Shaun O'Neill. in "A" Grade, and from Year 11, Alex
Morelli (Capt), Tony Todaro and Peter Rayner in "8"
Grade. Damlen Cosgriff, Anthony Coon and Steven
Scroggie took part in invitation HS.C. debates against
C.L.C Eltham, and Damian Neyion, John Smith and
Peter Thomas did the same as Year II representatives,
Both of the D.A.V, teams did very well indeed, especially
considering the inexperience and nervousnessof
all the debaters at the startof the season. The"A" Grade
team lost only one debate - the first one against SI.
Kevin's, which was, unfortunately just enough to. keep
them out of the finals. Mark Neal did very well, Winning
the adjudicator's vote for the best speaker in several
debates The "8" Grade team did even belter, sweeping
all before them with a forceful and aggressive style
of debating. Undefeated inthe home and away rounds,
they disposed of Saiesian College in the quarter-finC;1ls,
only to be beaten fair and square by a very well equipped
Wesley team in the semi-final. Peter Rayner and
TonyTodaro shone out, winning the adjudicator's award
twice and three times respectively. Thiswas a fine effort
for a team new to the business, and augurs well tor 1979.
Thanksare due to all those who took part, and to those
parents, relations and friends whose support for the debaters
was constant. as well as to Mr. Crennan who was
CHESS TEAM
Parade entered a relatively new area at school competition
this year with the forming of the Parade Chess
Team. This came as a resuit of chess sets being installed
in the Library for the use of the students. Chess has been
played in inter-school competition for a number of years.
Br. Wright arranged for Parade to be represented in this
competition and offered any interested students the
chance to test their playing skills in an elimination series.
Ten students were finally selected from approximately
thirty-five entrants.
Each round was played after school at the host team's
school. We often found ourselves far afield in places we
had never heard of; however. this added to the variety
and interest of the competition. We soon found thaf most
of the opposition players were very proficient at the
game; however the Parade team acquitted itself quite
well considering our comparafive lack of experience.
Distinguished performances were made by James
Warden (form five) and his brother Ben Warden (form six)
who. in the fourth round. played a marathon three hour
match at Mt. Scopus. Eventually we finished sixth overall.
Special thanks are due to Br. Wright for fumishing the
opportunity for the establishment of the team and congratulations
to the players for their excellent efforts.
Parade once again entered a team in the HSV7 programme.
"IT'S ACADEMIC". After a very good start.
which saw us leading up until the start of the last round.
we unfortunately were not quick enough to "beat the
buzzer". The team which won our heat, Donvale High.
59
eventually went on to compete in the State Final. Congratulations
to team members for their participation -
Paul Pika. Russell Lew Kee. Luke Smith and Gordon
Falconer. These boys were selected from over forty year
10 boys who tried out for the team.
School Mass
On March 17the school assembled as a bOdy for the
firsttime. Theoccasion was the School Mass.the launching
event for a continuing stable spirit and endeavour
between the staff and students for the coming year.
Mass was celebrated by Fathers Creed, Gebbie, and
Bergin.
The ceremony also provided the occasion for the investiture
of the College Council. John Dinan, last year's
College Captain, gave a short impressive speech and
then presented ChrisRyanwith the captain's badge. This
was followed by the twelve council members being
presented with their respective badges by the three
celebrants.
Santa Monica
Form 3 Be 4 Camp
Tents were pitched at Santa Monica. a lovely spot
about eight miles from Lome. The camp site had
facilities for only forty. but we managed to accommodate
170 boys. As soon as we settled in, boys were
assigned to work groups for the purpose of dealing with
every-day chores. Thiswas done with a view to fostering
independence and self-sufficiency. The boys executed
their duties with enthusiasm and gusto sothat they would
leave themselves with ample time for activities such as
nature walks, orienteering, biology and science walks,
canoeing and sports. Swimming appeared to be the
most favourite pastime, mainly due to the fine weather
we were experiencing.
Evening activities were structured by the boys and
included a fair amount of drama. Virtually every teacher
In the school was "taken off", and I am surethe teachers
who were there will have had something to think about.
One of the highlights of the evening was the teacherfather
hunt. Itconsisted of staff and fathers being given a
five-minutes' start and then being hunted out in the thick
scrub. The sight of 160 torches glowing in pitch black
surroundings was quite a spectacle.
I would like to thank the teachers and fathers who
assisted in making this camp a most enjoyable experience.
Achievements
Paradians, both current students and old boys, have
had notable achievements in sportsover the past year.
This is undoubtedly a reflection of the tradition of endeavour
and sportsmanship that is fostered at Parade.
The following Isa listof boys that has come to the attention
of the editor.
Steve Cashen, Form 5, has had a good season with
the Carlton Cricket Club in their second and third
grades. He was also associated with the team that won
the W. J. Dowling Shield for Cariton for the season 1977-
78
Ċraig Considine. HSCclass of 1976,was a representative
for hiscountry at the recent Commonwealth Games
held in Edmonton, Canada.
Chris Fenech, Form5, had an eventful year inthe sport
of water polo, being selected for the Victorian and
Australian U-18teams and the Victorian and Australian
Schoolboys teams. He toured North America as a
member of the Australian U-18squad.
Philip Heffernan, Form 5, has had a fair measure of
success on the squash courts. He won the Balwyn Open
Plate and was runner-up in six tournaments.
Mark Lawson, Form 5, !'lasenjoyed a successful season
with the Collingwood Football Club. The highlight of
hisyear was playing inthe U-19Grand Final althe MCG.
Joseph Rosario, Form 4, won the Victorian U-14Table
TennisChampionship. He was also a semi-finalist in the
Australian U-14Championship.
Walkathon
This year the Walkathon was an all-time record
S12,000.The Committee consisted of Brian Barnes,Chris
Jackson, Maurice Lane, Bernard Peters, Ryan Vanderwert
(members of the 1977 committee), Chris Ryan,
Shane Aitken, John Montemurro, Shan McCarthy
rH.S.C.);Tony Todaro, Alex Morelli, Michael Smith and
Stephen Hewatt (Form V).
After many weeks of enthusiastic planning, lost note
books, thumb biting, etc" the day was changed from
21stSeptember to 15thAugust. The wet weather almost
meant a cancellation of the date; however, a break in
the clouds sent everyone scurrying off, which ruined
Brother Swaney's military-like precise 5-minute intervals.
Some ran, some walked, some skate-boarded, some
loafed, but all got back sate and sound to catch the
buses at 1.15p.m. Free drinks were handed out by the
ladies (a heated bus shelter would come In handy).
The enthusiasm was so high that the cross-country
runners, who were not available on 15thAugust. ran ilthe
following Wednesday. (Thisyear there was no need to
"invite" disappearing members to a Repeat Performance.)
The top amount this year was collected by Tony Todaro,
Form V Room 8 - S219.80.Special commendation
isdue to Peter Rayner, one of our blind students, who
collected S50.50and walked the whole 20 km. Form I
Room 22 - under the able direction of BrotherWynne -
collected the magnificent sum of Sl,669.20.Eightboys in
Room 22 collected over S50.00each.
The response from the whole school was a very generous
one. It isinteresting to note that last year's prize went
to a FormIboy, Michael Kent - S325.Thisyear it went to
a Form V student. Who knows next year?
Reverend Father Bill Meese, a Dominican Priestand
an Old Paradlan, has already received the sum of
Sl,500 towards a hospital In the Solomon Islands. He will
be coming to Parade early In the next year to address
the school.
Thewold-be thespians who represented Parade in this
theatrical venture were: Terry Dwyer. John Smith. Peter
Thomas. Vincent Ryan and Andrew Perri.
The story is about a very staid bourgeois banker who
becomes. as it were. hisIntercontinental aunt's protege.
In the process of ftltting around the world. our banker
learns a great deal of what life isabout. includln~ love.
The story concludes with his failing in love and Withthe
discovery that his aunt Is really his mum.
The production was very colourful and. with the aid of
a 22-piece orchestra. one could claim it to be a resounding
success.
An inevitable feature about school plays isthat every
year someone loses a shoe. and this year it was me.
Art Show
The fourth Parade Ari Show was held on Friday 29th
September. Saturday and Sunday in the COllege Hall.
Fernsand shrubsand brightly coloured flowers were in
abundance amongst the exhibits. and soft music
played as the Committee members and a happy crowd
of parents and friends heard an interesting talk by artist
Mr. John Borrack who opened the Exhibition.
The guests gathered to enjoy savouries. champagne
and chicken before moving around to view the 450
paintings. These were artistically arranged and most
interestingly displayed.
66
Demonstrations of pottery. glass-blowing. macrame
and china painting drew enthusiastic viewers during the
show. and on the opening night. artist Margaret Dawson
gave a demonstration of landscape painting which
proved a great attraction.
Boys from the College showed their skill at woodturning
in a special section of the Hall. and other exhibits
included weaving. jewellery. leatherwork and hand
crafts of various kinds.
Altogether the 1978 Art Show was a triumph for all
those associated with it. and a most rewarding effort for
the COllege generally.
Horse Riding Classes
Horseriding was one of the new projects initiated at
Parade in 1978.The early success of the project was due
to the great support we received from a number of
people connected with the school. In the space of five
hours the parents were responsible for the full construction
of our horse yards during the second working bee.
These were constructed out of treated pine and are
situated almost opposite the Brothers' residence. The
middle school Woodwork classes undertook the full
construction of a Saddlery near the yards. Thanksisalso
due to the many parents who donated equipment and
to the four families who supplied horses.
During Third Term 65 boys from Forms 1-4 went
through the classes.Classesof 45 minutes in length were
heid for groups of sixon a weekly basis. Those students
who developed a reasonable degree of competence
were eligible to choose riding as an option for sport and
could also request to ride at the college on a Saturday.
Riding during these times has been supervised by Brs.
Challis and O'Neill. It is hoped that we will be able to
expand our existing programme in 1979.
Queensland
Trip
We leff Parade at 6 a.m .. Friday. September 25th.
bound far Parkesin southern New SouthWales. Thiswas
a very long and tedious journey by coach. The main
attraction of the firstday was a tour of the C.S.l.R.O.radio
telescope at Parkes. From there we went to Goondiwindi.
Queensland. where we spent our second night.
Thefollowing day took usover the Tropic of Cancer into
Rockhampton where we spent our third night.
Mechanical difficulties with the coach delayed our
arrival in Airlie by eleven hours.it was nearly 11p,m" too
late to pitch our tents. sowe spent the night inside a iarge
shed with no walls.
The fiffh day was set aside for a cruise through the
Whitsunday Passage, Our initial stop was at Hook Island
where we checked out the reef in a gloss-bottomed
boat and then from on underwater obseNatory off the
island. Both views were absolutely fantastic. We then
went off to South Molle Island. and we were seNed a
superb lunch on boord, We also took advantage of the
large swimming pool on the island to cool off from the
hot sun,Affer looking around and collecting a few Items
we soiled for Daydream Island. Herewe saw an Incredible
swimming pool - it was filled with sea water and it
was designed to zig zag in all directions, As if that weren.t
enough. it even had a bar in the centre, That night
we went to watch and compete in the local toad races,
Unfortunately we had no winners. but we had a close
second in "Roda's rooter Mk, 2",
The following day was our first long-awaited break.
Some of us hod a fantastic time cruising around the
island. others went swimming. while the remainder
chose to see the sightsaround Airlle Beach, When night
fell, it was down to the local disco to swing to the sound
of the Bee Gees.
The following day saw us travelling down the Bruce
Highway to the Bundaberg Rum Distillery for a most
fascinating tour. We had not reaiized till then that sugar
cane had such interesting industrial applications, The
68
coach then journeyed on to Noosa Heads. Hereagain it
was out with the bathers. what with the temperature
soaring to 33°C and our campsite being virtually on the
beach.
Unaccustomed as we were to the intense heat, there
were quite a few cases of sunburn, Two students had to
be taken to hospital for treatment. Thenight life at Noosa
Heads was quite uneventful. almost as exciting as at
Parkes,
Finally the day had come for our excursion to Surfers
Paradise, On the way, we stopped off at a plantation
where we sampled some luscious tropical fruits,We arrived
at about 3 o'clock. pitched our tents. and then
went for a long swim, This was all the more welcome
since we had been cooped up in our hot and humid
coach since 6 o'clock that morning, In the evening,
those who dared ventured onto the Surfers Paradise
disco scene,
Thenext day was equally exciting and could be rated
as the best day of our trip, We strarted off at the famous
Sea Worid where we saw some of the most Incredible
aquatic acts anyone could hope for, We saw men feeding
seven-foot sharks,sea-lions jumping through hoops
and playing musica/lnstruments. and dolphins leaping
fiffeen feet into the air and flying through rings of fire, We
then mode our way to Gllltraps Auto Museum where we
saw a selection of eiegant automobiles from the past,
That evening we settled down to a beautiful fruit dinner
cooked by our gourmet chet. Gene. But suddenly the
rains came, and with our tents tucked away, we scrambled
across to the Christian Brothersschool in Southport
for the night.
The next day was a full day's journey to Port Macquarie.
broken only by a visit to the "World's Biggest
Banana", The following day was spent entirely on the
bus. this time headed for Mascot Alrpcrt in Sydney, We
arrived five minutes before departure time, but we all
managed to board the plane,
I would ilke to end this report with a special thanks to
BrotherChallis and Brother Fitzgerald for putting up with
us and for their patient efforts in organising the trip,
Anthony Lolon (Form 4)
Western
Aust. Trip
Our tnp to the State of Excitement began with an
uneventful 31/2 hour flight to Perth.Upon reaching Perth,
we went for a picnic lunch at the very picturesque Yanchep
National Park. Many of ushired row-boats and the
teachers were clearly outshone Inthe fine art of rowing.
The next day we boarded a ferry for RottnestIsland in
beautiful sunny weather. An expensive bike ride enabled
usto see most of the island as well as the natives
(including the famed "Barry Quokka"). We saw the
same sights again, as it fumed out, on a bus tour of the
island. Thereturntrip on the ferrywas very soothing - the
teachers were warned about one hardy student who
had eaten a hamburger before the trip but we noticed
thatthey themselves didn't stay on the deck for very long.
Next day an expensive, free morning in Perth we vis-
Ited the EICabala Blanco horse sfud and saw a number
of exciting sights (and a few Anduluslan horsesas well).
The staff were treated to a sing-song feafuring "Meathead"
on the returntrip to our caravan pork where some
"bockies" got set up for the trots that night.
Day four tock usfrom Perthto Augusta, via Fremantle,
Busselton, fhe "Jewel" limestone cave and Cape
Leeuwin lighthouse which is at the South-western tip of
Austraiia.
The next day we set out for Aibany, travelling through
a forest of immense Karri trees. We stopped for a few
hours to climb the Gloucester Tree lockout which is the
highest tree lookout in the world.
Themorning of day sixwas quiet until a frantic teacher
started complaining that someone had stolen histowel.
It later turned up as three-quarters of a towel and a face
washer. We then left for Australia's only operating whaling
station at Frenchman's Bay near Albany. Itcould also
lay claim to be the most vile-smelling place In Australia.
We were all sprayed with air freshener as we climbed
back on the bus. Mr. Josswas given an extra long spray
even though he hadn't been near the worst port of It.
Following this we saw some more ordinary sights(to save
embarrassing a certain Maths teacher, we won't mention
the blow-hole).
Day seven took us from Aibany to Esperance, we
passed through the StirlingRanges on the way, with Ray,
the dnver, sitting on about 75 mph as he did throughout
the trip.
After Esperance, with itspink lake, and Norseman with
Its truncated pyramid we were onto the Nullabor (the
treeless plain that has trees). Meanwhile our cultural
teachers were leading the "bus choir" in the singing (or
slaughtering) of such classics as - "The Old Lady Who
Swallowed a Fly", "The House of the Rising Sun" and
"Swanle". We camped on the Nullabor that night after
travelling about 500 miles.
The next morning a number of runners (including an
out-of-condltlon driver), set out to run across the Nullabor.
They were picked up at vanous stages (Ray first),
and we headed on. Our next stop was at the town
Nullabor where a certain Mr. Jossamazed the locals by
wearing a can-opener around his neck. After crossing
the W.A./S.A. border we reached our next campsite at
Ceduna.
Thenext day's travel was to PortAugusta via IronKnob
with its big trucks and Whyalla with its big ships.
Day eleven began as we looked forward to a tour of
the Barossa Valiey but our hopes were dashed as a
pollee car pulled usup Justoutside PortPirie. We thought
that Ray must have vloiated some road law but the
69
police accused us of stealing 10 HANDBAGS! - of ali
things, from a shop in Whyalla the day before. After over
an hour of fruitlesssearch, the pollee apologised and let
us go our own way.
The delay prevented us from reaching the Barossa
and so we went straight to Adelaide. The highlight of
Adelaide was the view of the city lights.
We rose at 5 a.m. on day twelve for the last leg of the
Journey. Lunch was had near Dlmbocla where Peter
Wilson presented Ray and John with our tokens of
gratitude. One of the teachers was presented with a jar
of peanut butter and we were on our way. Schocl was
reached at about 7.00 p.m. and our twelve days of fun
and frolic were over.
Mr.Joss, the tour organizer, Br.Francis, Mr. Cosgriff, Mr.
Jennings and Mr. Hughes mustreceive special thanks for
their efforts which made the tour a success. Extraspecial
thanks mustbe given for the work done by the dnver and
the cook, Ray and John.
Principals Report
The year 1978 began at a great tempo due to the
impetus of the Silver Jubilee celebrations, for which a
great deal of preparation had been made during last
year. Thistempo was maintained during the year with
innovations which proved quite successful and hopefuily
they will remain so,
We bade fareweil to Rev, 8r.S.Lavery to St.Leo's, Box
Hill, thanking him for his enthusiastic managing of the
Grade 5 of 1977.We also lostthe keen servicesof Mr. Ray
Fittwho, with hiswife Betty, offered histeaching prowess
to aid the education of the aborigines at Yarralin near
Darwin. We wish them well.
We also bade fareweil during the year to our
groundsman, Mr. V. Lancaster. Vem had been with usfor
five years and kept the grounds Inthe good order you so
often praised. Unfortunately, he was forced to retire
through recurring back troubles. He was ably replaced
by Mr. R. Moore.
Mr. G. Shoily was retained on the staff as fuil time P.E.
and Mr.J.Sinclair was added to the staff as a fuil time Art
teacher.
Due to the seeming unavailability of the services of a
regular chaplain, we were fortunate to gain the services
of Rev. G. Clarke C.P. who takes a period of Christian
Living in each of the Forms1 and 2 and is able to organize
one of the priestsof hiscommunity for any priestly
function he may require for the classes. Our thanks to
Rev. Father J. Macklin, the Superior of the Passionist
Houseat Templestowe for making his men available for
us and also for his celebration of the inaugurai Father-
/Son Mass and Communion,
On March 15thwe celebrated our SilverJubilee with a
Supper Dance at the Southem Cross Bailroom. Archbishop
F.Little graced us by his presence and addressed
the 400 guests on living up to the Christian traditions
as shown and stressed over the years by the Parade
Family. We also had present Mr.and Mrs.R.Williams who
had traveiled from Albury for the occasion and In his
address Ralph gave us the history of the College at
Alphinglon. Also at the main table were the Principal of
Victoria Parade 1952, Rev. Brother J. Carey, by whose
foresight Alphington was acquired and developed,
and the present Principal. Rev. Brother J. Wright. Our
thanks go to the organizing committee which had been
working since early 1977for making the function so successful.
The second event of the Silver Jubilee celebrations
was also very successful. Most Reverend J. O'Connell,
auxiliary bishop of Melboume, was the principal celebrant
of the open-air mass, assisted by old-boy priests of
the College. Thismass was offtered by some 1200participants
who included local dignitaries, parents, boys
and friends of the college. Our thanks to the boys of St.
Vincent's Boys' Home for providing the music for the
occasion.
During the year the staff has endeavoured to instilinto
the boys the high standards parents have asked, yet I
feel in some cases boys are forced into a double standard
situation and some are unable to handle it. If you
want the best from your boy in the school situation, then
you must insist the same in his home environment, his
associations outside of school such as footbail clubs,
scouts, parish groups: in his affitudes towards people -
family, relatives and friends, Ifeel parents need to supervise
their boy's activities and friends in the age brackets
for which the coilege caters. To know what is the right
72
thing to do or say, and then do it, can be done if we insist
often enough and firmly enough.
As In the past, so toe this year, the boys have been
generous with their time in helping with the various appeals
that are repeatedly coming to us for help. The
Freedom from Hunger Campaign, the Austin Hospital
Doer Knock appeals had the usual band of coliectors.
On a wider scale the classes aided the GAMA most
generously, together with Yoeralia, Guide Dogs for the
Blind, Poorman's Mass Appeal. Legacy Badges. Our
Mission appeal has been used in helping the boys at
one oflhe Brothers'Schoels in India at Asansol; In provid-
Ing aids at the Brothers'Novitiate in New Guinea where
we have ten native boys training to be Christian Brothers;
Special Appeal for the Melbourne Overseas Mission in
New Guinea, the remainder was sent to the Diocesan
authorities for the missions.
As in the past the boys were encouraged to take part
in the various sperts catered for in the coliege. Thisaspect
we feel is impertant towards the interest to be
shown academicaliy. We have noticed a lack of interest
Inschoel work inthose boys dodging their respensibillties
In this field of coliege life and a waning of interest.
studies and behaviour in those playing for the coliege
and also for outside clubs.
We thank Mr. Ian Bibby and those who helped In
training the co liege swimming team at the beginning of
the year. The team showed the results of good hard
disciplined training by the success in the various carnivals
In which we participated. Our congratulations and
thanks to those boys for those many very early arduous
mornings.
Our thanks too, to those parents who helped our sporting
teams of a Saturday morning either by being actively
engaged with a team or by their encouragement
by simply being present Saturday after Saturday. In
cricket we were moderately successtulwith three teams
reaching the finals. So toe In footbali we had a
happy season with the boys endeavouring to play the
spert as it should be played. Four of our seven teams
reached the finals.
Our congratulations to Brother T. Giles and Miss P.
Roeney for their successful and tireless efforts Saturday
afternoens at the basketbali stadium. In the first and
second terms we were weli to the fore, at times playing
teams much bigger in build and yet were far from disgraced.
We did not take as active a part this year in tennis
as in the past, partly due to a seeming lack of interest
which we hope is just a passing phase. Boys need to
remember that to succeed, particularly with a game like
tennis, It demands a lot of self-sacrifice to practice hard
and often.
Our cross-country boys again trained hard this year
and won several sections of the C.J.SA carnival at Royal
Park. Unfortunately, due primarliy to the usual winter
colds and flu, we could not carry on the good work at
later carnivals.
Paul O'Donneli, Shayne Annett, Robert Woed, David
Williams, Kevin Colium and Dermott Spiliane represented
us with the Senior Coliege at the ACC As this
repert goes to print we hope the endeayours and training
wlli be weli rewarded at the C.S.SA carnival.
Once more the annual camps were heid successfuliy
despite unfavourable weather. My thanks to those parents
who helped and the teachers who shared the
experiences of this side of coliege life.
The Fathers' and Mothers' Associations held their
many functions which help to knit the "Parade Family" so
73
well. We thank these committees for the time and effort
spent and congratulate them for the great success they
achieved. Perhaps one of the most successfulnights was
the Father/Scn Communion which was held for the first
time, hopefuliy It will continue and become one of the
features of the annual calendar. The Father/Scn Sperts
Nights were very successful with some 80% of the college
taking part. ,
The annual Barbeque was a great success with ali
having a great time. TheExecutive Committee isalready
busy planning for next year's for they feel it should be
better. We raised some 57,000 at this year's B.B.Q.
I thank ali these committees for their efforts for the
coliege and particularly the executive officers for their
suppert to me during the year.
I thank all the parents for supporting the coliege so
well.
I am most grateful to the staff of the college. Brother E.
Duckworth for his work as deputy and Form r Master,
MissionColiector; To BrothersT.Glies, T.Cole and MissP.
Rooney for so ably guiding the steps of our Primary C
Classesand for their efforts put into the sperting teams for
which they were respenslble.
To Mr. W. Bottriell, Form 2 Green Master - Music Man
and manager of some sperting teams. To Mr. I. Bibby,
Form 2 Blue Master for his untiring zeal in training the
major school spertsteams of swimming and athletics. To
Mr. G. Carter, Form i Blue Master, for his co-operation
with sperting teams. To Mr.J.Sinclair and Mr.G. Sholiyfor
endeavouring to improve the art and physical attitudes
of the boys.
To Mrs.E.Breeding for her work In organising the Tuck
Shop and the many Mothers who served the boys, we
say thank you!
Tothe Librarians, Mrs.G. Vermont and MissF.Laurie for
their untiring work in this very important part of College
life.
Tothe office staff of Mrs.P.Howeli and Mrs.L.Geary for
their patience and understanding In the most trying situations.
To Mrs. Jayne for her excelience in loeking after the
needs of the brothers.
To Messrs.V. Lancaster; F. Brandon and R.Moore for
keeping the grounds in so impressive a manner.r
To Drs.N.Sistand A Stella for looking after the health of
the Brothers.
Iwould like to thank too, Mr. Bob Aliweli for hisefforts In
the Special Reading Class; Mr. Frank Russelifor hisefforts
to improve the public speaking prowess of the boys; Mr.
John Williamson for his efforts with our deaf boys.
Particularly are we thankful to Mrs. Barbara Bibby for
her time and effort in accompanying our singing classes
and her expertise at those important times of masses
and Drama Nights.
To Mr. Ron Bourkefor hiswork in keeping the accounts
of the college In such an exemplary manner.
Lastly, I thank the boys for the endeavours and cooperation
during the year. You did weli!
Treasurer: Mr. B.Toomey
Committee: Mr. J. Gonzales; Mr. T.McGeary; Mr.
P. Peyton; Mr. R. Webster; Mr. H.
Plustwik; Mr. P. Casamento.
The year' 1978 was significant as we celebrated the
SilverJubilee of our college and through the formation of
a joint Ladies' and Fathers' Committee, functions befitting
the occasion were organised and successfully run.
The theme for the year was to foster a closer relationship
between the fathers and their sons, and to generate
a closer bond of responsibility and interest between the
fathers and the college.
A highlight of the year was the Inaugural Father and
SonCommunion Dinner.TheChristian spiritof the Parade
Family was evidenced when looking back from the altar
at SI.John's and seeing not a vacant seat available. Our
thanks are extended to Brother Adams for his preparation
of the liturgy, Father Macklin for celebrating the
mass and to Mr. Francis Bourke for addressing the
gathering at the dinner.
TheQuarterly Meeting was an outstanding success,as
we were fortunate to listen to an inspiring address from
that wonderful philosopher, Father Brosnan.
Our main ettort for the year was to assist with the
capital required to construct the new basketball courts
and by the medium of Working Bees, assistwith maintenance
and new works as required by Brother Adams. I
would like to thank all who willingly attended and
worked so well at the working bees; despite the fact that
a small fence now has 25 coats of paint and one working
bee was called off by the Chain Gang boss 5 minutes
prior to the sun coming out, much was achieved.
Through a Jointmoney raising venture with the Bundoora
Committee, we raised approximately 52000 towards
the courts.
Although we have been unable to receive a grant
from the Government to assist with the erection of the
much needed new Primary classrooms, the task of
monetarily supporting the Brothersinorder to provide our
boys with a Catholic education is nothing new. and in
this our Jubilee Year, we are reminded of the sacrifices
our predecessors made. Thiswill provide uswith the spirit
to again support Brother Adams in his tireless endeavours
to provide the necessary amenities for our
boys and their teachers.
Should we gauge the success of the Father and Son
Sports Nights by monitoring the determination of the
boys. the hope in their eyes when Dan has his turn, the
level of laughter and the number who participate, we
can say they were again successful.
The Fishing Trip at the time of writing this report is still
some weeks away but this report would be inconciusive
without mentioning that we expect the Jubilee Year to
conclude the Fathers' year with the much awaited
Father and Son trip to Fraser National Pork in the first
week-end in November. The only requirement not organised
to date is the co-operation of the fish.
.In conclusion, we. the Committee wouid like to thank
BrotherAdams for his suppori and guidance throughout
74
the year and we pray that the projects he has undertaken
on our behalf are brought to fruition.
Iwouid like to thank the members of the committee for
their support and willingness to give of their time and
labours whilst in office for the ultimate betterment of our
college.
Looking back over the year of 1978, it has indeed
been an exciting and a busy one for all concerned at
In .""arch we held our first function for the year, a
basket lunchecn in the school hall which was preceded
by Mass, celebrated by Father Tony Griffith of the Macleod
parish. Our Guest Speaker was Dr. A. W. Wlllee
PhD" who spoke on "Health. Happiness and Funthrough
Fitness"and proved to be most entertaining.
The remainder of our functions for the year were
equally enjoyable and successful. the highlights being
our Annual Dinner with Guest Speaker Mr. Vin Darroch,
the Fashion Parade by Anne Jesulenko and the Progressive
Dinner with the Fathers' Committee joining us and
organising a Dutch Auction to tinish off the evening's
festivities. Among our many other activities for the year
we have also supported the Edmund Rice Juvenate by
means of the Sliver Circle.
I would like to thank Mr. & Mrs. A. Ferrazza for their
generosity In lending their home to ustwice thisyear; Mr.
& Mrs. A. Carrazza for the use of their home for the
progressive Dinner and the parents who have attended
or supported these functions in some way.
Iwishto pay tribute to members of the committee who
have worked very hard and have offered tremendous
support to me throughout the year. Through their efforts
we have raised a total of 52.700 which Isa very pleasing
result. To Mrs. Margaret Mcintyre, retiring secretary. my
personal thanks for her encouragement and efficiency
which has made my task so much easier.
Finally, to Brother Adams and his staff, a special
"thank you" for hishelp to me and my committee and for
his unsparing efforts for the boys of the college.
1953-1978
Report
The year 1978became very significant to many past
and present members of the Parade family as a year to
reflect and celebrate on the achievements of the past
25 years.
Two major functions were organised to coincide with
the official opening of the College 25 years previously
on the 15thMarch. 1953.Thefunctions were in the form of
a Jubilee Ball held at the Southern Cross Ballroom on
Wednesday. 15th March. and an open air Mass celebrated
on the slopes of the picturesque grounds of the
Preparatory College on Sunday. 19th March.
Approximately 320 people attended the Ball at which
we were fortunate to have the current Archbishop of
Melbourne. Sir Frank Little. as Guest of Honour. Among
the Official Guestswho attended the ball were. Mr. and
Mrs. Ralph Williams (President of the Old Paradians Association
in 1953) Mr. and Mrs. Rene Stella (President of
the Old Paradian Association 1978) Rev. Brother Carey
PrinCiPalof Parade College 1953).Rev. BrotherAdams
Principal of Parade Preparatory College 1978) Rev.
~ rother Wright (Headmaster Parade SeniorSchool 1978)
and Mr. and Mrs. Tony Villanti (President of the Silver
Jubilee Committee).
Thesuccess of the evening could be gauged from the
numbers of mini re-unions being celebrated throughout
the nigh!. with many past students. Brothers. Lay
Teachers and parents recalling events and swapping
comical anecdotes with one another.
A table comprising students from the Foundation Year
of 1953added the required touch of nostaigia by wearing
their old school caps. Although the caps were
somewhat the worse for wear. they still wore them with
the pride you would expect from such a group.
A booklet depicfing the historical growth of the College
and of the many people involved in itsgrowth was
prepared for the Jubilee Celebrations and presented at
the ball. BrotherK.Smith,a past Principal of the College.
made reference to the fact that the page headed
"Progress Has Its Penalties", was also the page that displayed
his photograph. Following some humorous byplay.
it was agreed that we should write it off as a
printers' error.
A highlight of the evening was the presentation of a
plaque commemorating the Silver Jubilee of the College
to Rev. Brofher Adams from the Old Paradians
Association and presented on their behaif by Mr. Ralph
Williams. who in 1953 presented the deeds of the
"Flowerdale" property to Brother Carey.
TheOpen-Air Mass, celebrated by an Old Boy Bishop
of Parade. The Most Rev. P.J. O'Connell DD. and concelebrated
by Rev. Fathers A. Callinan. J. O'Shea. P.
Purcell and M. Mifsud. all past pupils of the Preparatory
College. was held on Sunday. March 19th.
Despite the rather windy conditions a large crowd
estimated in excess of1200 people gathered to join with
the celebrants in offering a Thanksgiving Mass for all
who have made the Preparatory College what it is teday.
77
We were very grateful to Brother Parton for moking the
St. Vincent's Boys' Home Band. under the direction of Mr.
S. Mcintosh. available to provide the musical
background for the Mass.
The altar was constructed and set on the Western
slopes of the college grounds overlooking the ovals. fhe
base of the altar was in the form of two semi-trailers
provided by Mr. Lou Arthur Jnr. a member of one of the
Coilege's most generous families throughout its25 years.
The singing of the boys from the Coilege under the
direction of Mr. W. Bottrieil was beautiful and we were
fortunate to have Brother Cauchi. a former teacher at
the College. leading the congregation with his magnificent
voice from the altar. Brother Cauchi was also the
soloist in the chanting of the Responsorial Psalm.
The Gitts of Bread and Wine were brought to the altar
by the Bibby Family who through the long association of
Ian as a teacher at the Coilege and his wife Barbara
who for many years has provided the musical accompaniment
forthe College choir. together with their lovely
family. many of whom have. or are. attending the Preparatory
Coilege. worthily represented the Parade family
in bringing the Gifts to the altar on their behalf.
The Readings were read by Mr. Stan Ogilvie (a former
teacher) and Mr. Frank Russell (currentiy the Speech and
Drama teacher) and the Prayers of the Faithful were
read by Mr. Lou Arthur Jnr. (the son of Mr. Lou Arthur who
was one of the prime instigators in the purchase and
early growth of the coilege). Mrs. Mary Ni9i1 (Foundation
President of the Ladies' Auxiliary). Mr. Phil Ryan (Foundation
President of the Fathers' Association). Brother Parton
(Former Principal of the Coilege) Mr. Rene Stella (Current
President of the Old Paradians Association) and Master
Hans Hatton (present day pupil of the coilege).
78
The scene as depicted that day looking down over
the ovals. which provided a magnificent setting for such
an occasion. was one of serenity. peacefulness and
togetherness. as the Parade family. past and present.
gathered to pray together in order to celebrate the past
25 years in the most fitting way possible.
Our thanks are extended to Rev. Brother Adams who.
despite having just returned from a study trip to Rome.
involved himself untiringly with his support for the Silver
Jubilee Committee and also for his efforts in preparing
the Jubilee Mass Liturgy.
The Committee. under the leadership of its Chairman
Mr. Tony Villanti, would like to thank all who helped and
participated in making the Silver Jubilee celebrations of
our College the success that they undoubtedly were.
FORM TWO GREEN
We found at the beginning of the year that Mr. Ray Fitt
had left us to teach at an Aboriginal Mission in the
Northern Territory. and we wish him every success in his
new work. He would no doubt be pleased to know that it
took two Teachers to replace him! Mr. Sholley became
our Physical Education Teacher and Mr. Sinclair took us
for Art and Craft. The Art room took on a new look when
we painted it (under Mr. Sinclair's guidance) complete
black and the effect was. to say the least. startling. Br.
Clarke. from the Passionist Monastry at Templestowe
later visited us once a week for a Religious Knowledge
period. Otherwise. we found ourselves faced with the
"old" Teachers of 1977.
Amongst the highlights of this year was the New
Games Day held in the first term with the boys from
Bundoora. A thoroughiy enjoyable day was spent by
everyone except our Mothers who had to work overtime
to get the mud off our clothes. The oval proved to be a
little (!) wet for the occasion. and the Teachers fared just
as badly as the students in the conditions.
At the end of Term 2 we had two days of sports electives.Thesewere
arranged by Mr. Sholley who then flew
to Europe for four weeks and left us to it. The electives
proved to be very successful and enjoyable - as was
the trip - and we are looking forward to the next occasion.
We chose between roller skating. bowling. squash
and swimming and spent the morning at one of these
activities under the supervision of Teachers and Parents.
The Jubiiee Mass was held on the oval at the beginning
of the year. The occasion was spoiled to some
extent by the very strong wind. but a large crowd was
present and we took part In the singing of the Mass..
Later. a class Mass was held in the Hall. to be followed
by a Massfor the combined FormsOne and Two.Thelast
was a particularly fine Mass as everyone did his best to
participate as far as possible.
We were visited in the early part of the year by Miss
Rosemary Twomey. a member of the Victoria Police
Force. and for a period of 85 minutes we were treated to
a full and very interesting account of the work done by
our Police Force. We are grateful to Miss Twomey for
giving up her time while on vacation to speak to us.and
her visitwas certainly one of the highlights of the year for
the class.
We fook the usual active part In inter-Schooi sport on
Saturday morning. and the class was well represented
with a total of eighty boys taking part in some form of
representative sport for the College.
The Annual Camp was again at Tallangatta. It was
the first visit there for most of us and the camp was a
memorable one. An extract from a diary kept at the
camp sumsup one day. and gives some insight into the
way the camp was conducted. Our sincere thanks to Mr.
BillO'Halioran and Mr. Greg Dunlop who accompanied
the Teachers to supervise us during the week.
Our thanks are offered to all at Alphingfon who have
assisted in making our stay here so profitable and enjoyable
and we hope that what we have learned will
help us in our first year at Bundoora in 1979.
THURSDAY (extract trom Camp Diary).
A beautiful morning. a white frost. a very quiet house
af 7.30a.m. and 2 "C. After some Herculean effortsby the
supervisors. everyone was more or less awake and
found his way to breakfast. Soon afterwards. beautiful
sunshineand to Dartmouth Dam. There.we saw a film on
the construction of the dam. were given an informative
brochure. and a working model of the dam was
explained to us.then up to the dam itself. a very impressive
and awesome sight. Lunch below the Dartmouth
township - in beautiful sunshine. Vegemite. jam.
peanut buffer. salad. cheese and lettuce. meat and
pickles sandwiches. with fruit and cordial. A visit to a
sawmill on the way home. and the inevitable milk bar at
Mitta Mitta. Back at the Centre. a new determination to
beat the record for the hill run.Thebest known time for a
Parade boy (Damian Brazier. 1976) was 18 minutes.
Stephen Jones (16.10).Dermott Spillane (16.20). David
Jackson (17.20)and Tim Cheesewrighf [17.40)all came
in ahead of the previous record. Some free time. then
tea - braized steak. vegetables etc. - followed by
assembly. Then followed one of the camp highlights. an
Impromptu concert. with the supervisorsas "New Faces"
judges. Top awards went to Dino Lorenzin and Mark
Huglin. both on piano. Some very good comedy
sketches by groups scored well. and Impersonations by
"guest artist" Mark Carrazzo reduced the audience
[and the supervisors)to hysterics. After the concert. some
FORM 2 BLUE
We have enjoyed being the senior boys at Alphingfon
thisyear and we are looking forward to our promotion to
Bundoora. However. we would like to look back on our
experiences during the year.
There were few staff changes and we were able to
quickly settle down to a busy year. We were sad to see
Mr. Fitt go. but we all wish him well In his work with the
aborigines in N.T.Mr. Sholly and Mr. Sinclair have taken
over the P.E.and Art.
Theboys from our room have been very enthusiastic in
the many sports we have - only two boys have not
represented the College in inter-school sport. We were
quite successful at football as many of our class played
important roles in the U/13 and U/14 Grand Finais.
Almost half the class played basketball in teams organised
by MissRooney and Br.Giles and we have had
many representatives in cricket. swimming and athletics.
During the last week of the second ferm. we had
electives for P.E.and sport and we had such a great time
at swimming. squash and ten-pin bowling that we are
looking forward to our next outing.
Another special day was that for roller-skating at Wesf
Heidelberg. We all had our fair share of bruisesand most
of us were able to skate quite well by the end of the
session.II was a great experience.
Our Form 2 Camp was held at Tallangatta. We spent
a very enjoyable week there. travelling around Tallangatta
and Beechworth districts and visiting the historical
museums and monuments. We also visited Dartmouth
Dam. the Hume Weir and the Trout Farm.
Joe Natoli suffered a nasty injury during a footy game
and was taken to hospital. He took some weeks to recover
but he was still able to enjoy the camp.
We had a wonderful day when we invited our counterparts
from Bundoora to share a games day on our
ovals. Fortunately. there was heavy rain the nighf before
and we were able to become acquainted with the mud
at close range. Theteachers joined in and some scores
were settled.
We have had a wonderful time af Alphingfon and
1978has not been an exception. but we must move on.
you had a frisbee you had to have a partner and you
scored as you threw it. There were stiltsto walk on, and
we played laps where we had to siton peoples' laps ina
was the Earth Ball. It was a big ball about 5 feet tall and
had the Earthpainted on it. The idea was to jump up on
"Form Ones Roller Skating"
On the second last day of the second term both Form
Ones visited the Rollarena In Dougharty Road. Thiswas
quite an event as many of the Form Ones had never
roller skated before, and didn't know anything about the
sport. After putting our boots on, and practising on the
outside carpet. we attempted to skate on the rink. Most
of us clung to the surrounding wall the firsttime around,
and then plucked up enough courage to attempt to
skate properly. After collecting a few bumps and bruises
most of us got the hang of it, and began skating very
well, inciuding many of those who were there for the first
time,
For Electives on the fifteenth of September, 1978, we
had a choice of swimming, bowling or squash. Twelve
boys chose to play squash. Thirty boys wanted to go
swimming, and thirty-eight boys elected to go bowling,
When the eleven of us turned up for squash, Brother
Adams said to go in. Everyone was eager to go with
friends in the firstfew matches then we played with any
person that was about as good as us at squash. At the
courts they also had a table tennis table which the
people who were waiting for their turn could use,
FORM ONE GREEN
On commencing school this year, we found we had
been placed in FormOne Green with BrotherDuckworth
(for better or worsel) as our Class Master. We also had
two new boys - David Williams and Don Marciano -
who have fitted in very well. Later in the year we gained
another member - Steven Walters. We also lost one of
our class - Graeme "Jobie" Kelly who isoff to America
for a year. We wishJobie all the best and look forward to
renewing old acquaintances with him in the future,
After Primary Classes, where we had mainly one
teacher, we had to get used to many different teachers
under the period system, We also had to cope with
French and Latin (double ugh!) and Science, with
BrotherAdams, which was much more advanced than
our primary work. One break from the "old faces" was
when Brother Clark of the Passionistscame to our ciass
once a week. We believe he thinkswe are the best ciass
he takes, and we think he is a pleasant change. Thanks
for your work with us, Brother.
Among the important duties in the smooth running of
the school isthe job of looking after the bins.Thisused to
be done by the Form Two boys, but this year Form One
Green took on the duty. The leader and organiser is
David Kegele, helped by Nicholas Scully, Simon
Toomey, Tony McNamara, Paul McCarthy and David
Williams. Theseboys have done a fine job in helping to
keep "Australia Beautiful".
Our contribution to the Missionshas been good and at
the time of writing this - our total isa little over $700. We
expect to improve thisby the end of the year. Thismoney
has aiready been used to help Missionwork in India and
New Guinea.
One of the highlights of the year was the school camp
to Swan Hill during the first term. We left Spencer Street
Station on April 23rd and arrived at Swan Hill about 5
hours later. We then travelled by bus to a Scout Camp
situated close to the Murray River, where we chose our
cabins. Among the educational tours, we visited a
wheat farm, a research farm, a dairy - where Paul
Darroch had a slight misunderstanding with a cow. We
also visited the Military Museum and the Sound and Light
exhibition at the Pioneer Settlement (probably the best
of all the tours).ThePaddle Steamer was also interesting
and novel. Later we went to a pheasant farm and an old
homestead, "TynTynder", These were very enjoyable.
On the Friday we rose eariy - cleaned up the camp
and eventually made for the station where we boarded
the train for home, Thanks to Mr. Bibby and Mr. Carter
and also the fathers who supervised usand did so much
to make sure the camp was interesting and enjoyable.
On the sporting side, our ciass had some noteable
sportsmen, Probably the best ruckman in the school is
Kevin Collum, who must be a future League star. He was
helped in the under 13team by David Williams (a great
asset)and many others who did their best for the school.
We also had quite a number of Cross Country runners
including Peter Barnes, Laurence Barker, Martin Heffernan,
Simon Toomey and Jobie Kelly.
In Swimming we had Anthony Martin as our star.
Another was Michael Newell.
Now for the awards in School. The most punctual -
Laurence Barker. The Quietest - Peter Barnes and Don
Marciano, The noisiest - Andrius Lipsysor Paul Dinan or
Paul Culhane - have your choice I The pupil who mislays
pens etc. - Peter Benetti - with some help from?
They boy who sits quietly best - between Tim Wilson
and Phillip Ryan. The best gambler - Jay Hewatt.
Finallya few words about the impression P.P.c.had on
Steven Walters who arrived during the second term. The
boys seem to have been quite friendly and Steven was
helped to settle in by David Williams. Thework has been
a little more difficult but the teachers have been very
helpful. On the whole, Steven found the transition fairly
smooth and has settled in well under difficult conditions.
GRADE 6 BLUE
With many new faces entering 6 Bluefor the firsttime It
would seem that our teacher would hold all the advantage,
before we grew united. Our unity soon grew. but
we never did manage to take over for BrotherGiles was
always one step ahead. Anyway. what an enjoyable
year it was with many exciting things happening in and
out of the classroom which helped us appreciate the
value of education.
It was worth remembering when David Nolan wrote
and produced a play about "David and Goliath" which
we filmed with the video equipment. On many occasionstoo.
our class debates drew some fine oratory skills
from Darren Buckley. Jonathan Ellks. Davin McKelson.
Vincent Hedger and Simon Zebrowski. However.
bananas are still bent despite the oppositions win. We
also have two setsof ever alert twins, so if we say the best
are Peter and Gary Atherton. then the homework prize
goes to Cameron and David Scott. Poor Brother. he
never discovered they swapped places in class. However.
while speaking of acting. nobody equalled our
own "Miss Piggy" of Muppets fame. by Peter Cole. who
provided hoursof clever entertainment with a variety of
imitations of well known characters. He was.always refreshing
atter a sessionof maths or English which were
delightful subjects themselves.
Class singing every Tuesday brought out the best from
Peter Smyth. Mark Leach and Stephen Carmody, well
supported by the rest of the chorus. Bestclassroom jobs
were done by Mark Kilkenny and Jonas L1psyswho were
conscientious in their work. Adriano Pilati was noted for
neat projects, and for neatness in all books Adrian Qulntarelli
and Craig Richards were commendable. Our
best class captain, who was very conscientious, was
Gavin Keogh, who was a tremendous help to Brother
Giles. Our most widely travelled was Tim Heydon who
had to go on an excursion to America just as we finished
a project on that country. Anyway. the restof usenjoyed
many excursions such as visiting the Botanical Gardens
where we studied trees and shrubsfrom many countries.
Some of our notable sportsmen were Grant Males.
Andrew Barbazza. John Doherty and Mark O'Connell in
basketball. The best cricketers were: Chris Bibby. Peter
Jackson and Owen Abrahams. while the champion
footballers were: Matthew Ryan. Bernard Powell and
Clete Blake.
We are looking fOlWard In the third term to our camp
at SilverCreek. which promisesto be exciting. especially
living together away from home.
While the school was away on Camp our class held
the Formula 10 BillyCart Championship which provided
thrills and spills for competitors. Mark Kilkenny was the
1978 champion. finishing first in 14.3 seconds. closely
followed by Clete Blake in 15.0 seconds.
Our most eventful year in 6 Blue has all too quickly
come to an end. but. as we expressed in our Class
Masses. our thanksgiving to God for all He has given to
us. so we face the future confidently with Faith in His
guidance.
GRADE FIVE
Well. there comes a time when little boys cease to pull
the ribbons in little girls' hair - at least in school. Wide
eyes took in the new surroundings with hope - mingled
with a touch of fear and uncertainly.
Alas. there was homework nearly every night - except
on Feastdays and Brother's birthdays - and there
was work in school too. Assignments here. speeches
there. and all sorts of tortures designed to make life
miserable.
Brighter things. however. were soon to come. Our
camp at Shoreham was the highlight of the year. For
both the boys and myself. A valuable lesson was
learned by some on our first beach walk when they used
the ocean as their path instead of the sand Subsequent
chaffing on the rain-ridden return left many straggling
behind carrying their pants. While I was congratulating
myself on the marvels of learning by experience. some
less jubilant mothers were wringing out the day's accumulation
of quicksand. As you can see. a great time
was had by all.
Sport was another plus for the newcomers. The weekly
ration of phys. ed. and sport - and the anticipation of
such - made life in the classroom much less intolerable.
As well. there were at least two - sometimes four -
sporting activities associated with the school through the
year and many boys jumped at the chance to represent
Parade.
86
The best builder of school spirit though was our prayer.
Our class celebrations ofthe Eucharist made us aware of
our oneness as both Christians and Paradians. As the
years pass I hope that both of these identities will grow
from the seeds that have been planted.

For the second year. the Under 14 team finished the
season as runners-up in the competition,
The roster included games against both A division
and B division sides. resulting in some woeful defeats
against the stronger sides. and some hard-earned victories
over the B division teams.
During the season. we were defeated convlncingiy by
SI. Kllda. Preston and Pascoe Vale. Owing to the unavailability
of a ground. we were forced to forfeit to La
this allowed us to play Malvem in the Grand Final. De La
contributed magnificently bolh as players ar,-i leaders.
Gomes losf during the year were fa St.Kilda and Presfon,
allhough we also recorded victories against these sides
at our other meetings.
Our season was marked by two highlights. Firstly, the
performance against the then top side of Pascoe Vole,
when with only 15 men, we notched a four goal win; and
secondly, the effort in making the Grand Final. This
game sow us six goals down at quarter time, but with
grit, a never give in altilude and plenty of ability, the
deficit was only seven points at the final bell.
Martin, Damian Moore and Mark Treppo were consistently
amongst the best players.
The 13B's won only one game for the year but produced
many players who mode the A side during the
season. Captain was Mark Somers who aport from
being in the best players each week, led the team with
determination and spirit. Although not successful on the
scoreboard, the team certainly developed a slrong
bend and will to win that is more important than just
winning the games. A good nucleus of players was
formed by Bernard Matisi, Vincent Long, Damian
Casamento, Phil Ryan, Bernard Phelan, Tim Wilson, Peter
Caddy and Mathew Neyion who contributed strongly
each week to the team's performance.
All in all, all enjoyable year, and mode even more so
by the wide support of parents. In particular, our Ihanks
to Messrs O'Halioran. Williams, Bowman, Somers,
Newell. Rodgers and Heffernan whose efforts each
week were very much appreciated.
Under 12A
The Under 12A football team complefed a very successful
year by being runners-up fo De La Salle wlfh only
the narrow margin of four points separating the teams in
the Grand Final.Theteam did not play well inthe firsthalf
of the Grand Final but fought back gallantly to make a
very exciting finish.
Our team was well led by two fine players. Peter Dynes
and Mark Elder. both of whom gave a number of inspiring
performances throughout the season. One key feature
of the team was the adaptability of quite a few
players. However. on the back line we were usually best
served by Brian Hartin, Andrew Carrozza, Michael Bottomley,
Gerard Foote, Peter Brennan, Shayne Annett,
and Tim Cabassl. In particular, Brian Hartin'sfine judgement
and clearing kicks often brought him under notice.
Peter Dynes, Peter Brown, Michael Batcheior and Brendan
Griffithsall occupied positions on the centre line on
occasions and usually contributed to our many good
victories.
Throughout the year our ability to kick big totals was
due to an abundance of taient Inattack. Playerssuch as
Clete Blake, Damian Mcinerney, John Doherty, Daniel
ZorzI.and Davin McKelson all combined well as a unit
and In one match kicked twenty-six goals In only sixty
minutes of football. Clete Blake was probably our most
reliabie and constructive player up forward.
Our following division was very strong but perhaps
lacked a little height but certainly nothing in courage
and determination, Mark Elder and Peter Barnes both
had excellent seasons. The other members of this team
within a team were Peter Garland, Adam Smal. and
Rabble Wood as rucks and Bernard Poweli as a clever
second rover.
Congratuiations to all team members and thanks to
fathers such as Messrs Dynes, Eider and Foote who
helped In a variety of ways. Better luck next year!
The Under 12BFootball Team played nine matches, losing
eight before achieving a well earned victory in the
last matched played.
The scoreboard in those first eight matches showed
heavy defeats, but the determined efforts and neversay-die
spirit of the Parade boys, combined with their
sportsmanship, earned the respect and admiration not
only of the Parade parents present, but also of the opposition,
as was stated on four occasions by the opposition
coaches congratulating our boys on their determined
efforts and the manner in which they played the
game.
As the St.Kilda coach stated to the boys, histeam had
the victory on the scoreboard, but the Parade boys had
the moral victory,
Thetremendous team spirit in this Bteam showed itself
in many ways, three exampies of which were as fol-
lows:-
(a) A different boy captained the side each week, His
duty included thanking the opposition at the end of
the match.
(b) The boys voluntarily, on suggestion, rostered themselves,
so that each boy, including the reserves,
played at least three quarters of football each week.
(c) Our sale victory in the last match was achieved by
coming from behind in the last quarter against a
strong wind. Thisvictory was purely a 'B' victory as no
'A' players played.
Based on the notes of the fathers, our best players for
the season were: Peter Jackson, Keith Fell, Andrew Delonna
and Michael TomasonJ.
Our sincere thanks are extended to all who helped us
and officiated at our matches.

Under 14 Cricket
In contrast to the teams of 1976and 1977,we fielded a
relatively weak side in the competition this year. As the
season progressed, it was pleasing to see the Improvement
taking place, particularly in our batting, and In
~ch match we compiled quite a good score in the
limited time available. However, the bowling remained
no better than mediocre, and we were unable to dismiss
the opposing teams In most matches. Fielding was a
consistent weakness, and. Inmore than one match cost
us a win, but overall, the season was quite a successful
one.
Under the rules of the competition, It Is unavoidable
that some players may not bat or bowl in each match,
and we thank the weaker players who came along to
every match to help the team, and perhaps went home
disappointed.
We are specially greattul to Mr.Jim Geary. for hishelp
Captains: A's Mark Beers B'sPeter Bibby.
Firstterm Saturday mornings were kind on sportsmen
this year as conditions were good for cricket. Our two
U/13 teams were thus able to participate to the fullest
and although not enjoying great success in terms of
winning, an enjoyable season was undoubtedly had.
The A's were rather inconsistent in that one week it
would be the batting that failed them and the next week
it would be the bowling. However, Mark Carrazzo, Martin
Heffernan, Danny Flynn, Peter Williams and Peter
O'Connell showed they have the ability to become
batsmen of high calibre. Of the bowlers, Peter Caddy
has great potential whilst Paul Fahey, Mark Beersand
Paul Street returned excellent figures In one or two
games.
Our Bteam had a disappointing season In relation to
winning but were definitely the most enthusiastic and
determined side in the competition. Led by Peter Bibby
and ably supported by his lieutenants - MessrsRyan
and Rodgers, the B'swere feared by all others for their
fierce fielding and quick repartee. Ofhers to contribute
with strong performances were Damian Moore, Paul
Murphy, Leigh Bowman, Brendan Evans and Mark
Treppo. Lets hope this spirit continues in P.P.c. sport.
Our thanks go porticularly to Mr, Rodgers for his untiring
efforts in transporting, umpiring and generally managing
a very happy and amiable team.
Under 12A team lost only two matches - both of which
were very close and exciting finishes,Theboys achieved
their fine resultsby giving a very even exhibition of all the
necessary skillsof cricket - no one feature of their play
was outstanding, In batting we exhibited good depth as
most team members were capable of scoring useful
nuns,In the main our most consistent nun-getters were
Peter Barnes, Clete Blake, Andrew Barbazza, David
Kegele, David McKelson and Brian Hartin.
Our fielding was generally of a high standard with
some excellent stopping, catching and throwing from
David Kegele, Paul Dinan, Des Mackay and Andrew
Carrazzo. Captain Peter Bames assisted our bowlers
greatly with his quick reflexes behind the stumps where
he figured in a number of dismissals. In bowling the new
ball was usually shared between Clete Blake and Brian
Hartin both of whom, on their day, were fine performers,
Much of the slower bowling was done by two very accurate
bowlers, David Dober and Paul Dinan. At times
these front line bowlers were supported by the everwilling
Andrew Carrazzo and David McKelson.
Perhaps the most memorable aspect of the season
was the excellent way in which the boys behaved,
especially in adversity, in one match where justice did
not favour us.
three of which we lost and the other was washed out
before we were able to bat.
Despite a definite tendency to drop our catches, the
team performed creditably, as evidenced by the
following scores:-
6/61 v. 51.Kilda 51B9
v, Sunbury 2/75 [washed out)
7/48 v, Preston 6/104
6/56 v, Malvern 6171
Our main aim was to see that every boy in the team
had a bat each week, thus resulting in many eOfly retirements.
Also, we endeavoured to give as many boys
as possible a bowl. which resulted in many no balls and
wides.
So,although we lost, each boy participated, which is
what is tnuly meant by being part of a school cricket
"team",
Bestperformances by batsmen were;-
Bernard Powell 30 retired v. Sf. Klldo
Damien Mcinerney 14 v. Preston
Chris Bibby 13 v. Malvern
and by bowlers;-
Damlen Mcinerney 3/13 v. Malvem & 3/22 v. Preston
Peter Jackson 2/9 v. Preston
Again our sincere thanks to the parents who supported
us and helped us with transport, umpiring and
scoring.
Under 12A Cricket
Although nominated as Under 12A and Under 12B
teams, the boys in thisage group were divided evenly in
ability. By playing two such even sides we probably
spoilt our chances of a premiership. What was called the
Basketball
Over seventy boys represented the college this year in
junior basketball, with teams In two competitions, the
C.Y.M.S. and the Junior Schools. Up to the end of the
second term six teams had played In Grand Finals, resulting
In three premierships.
We performed particularly well In the second term
with the Under 12's runner's-up, 12-19, and our Under 14's
winning 45-42, with best piayers Barry McBrearty, David
Dober, Paul Murphy and Andrlus Lipsys. The Under 16B
Grand Final was a heart-stopper. After finishing third on
the ladder, Parade met Cathedral College In a thrilling
final. Extra time was played to decide this match which
we won 43-41. Best players were John Dundovich, who
has an amazing spring, Damlen Charies, Kevin Meath
and Darren Wharton. We have entered eight teams for
the third term and expect more success.
successful. taking out the Under 12, Under 13 and Under
The next step was the A.C.C, where our success faded
away and we came home empty-handed.
Tennis
After several years of great interest in tennis. there has
been a noticeable drop in the enthusiasm of players this
year.
Our numbers in the coaching classes have been
down. and the interest in practising has been lacking.
Due to this lack. and other causes. Parade Preparatory
withdrew from the Junior VCLTA Competitions after the
first term. It Is hoped that in the Mure. we will again take
part in this fine competition; because. unless tennis
players take part regularly in competition. they will not
improve.
Our thanks to our coaches - Mr. John Reddock and
Mr. Jim Reddock - for the fine work they do with our
boys. Thanks also to those parents who assisted so well
with transport and supervision during the first term competitions.
