Bryan Oros (left) and Jeffrey Wallace (right). 2010 Staff Honorees In April, a dinner was held at The Gallery Grille in Greenville in honor of employees and board members who celebrated 10, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 45 years of service during 2009. The evening featured comments given by G. Bryan Oros, executive director, Jeffrey Wallace, board president, and Tammy Lininger, Villas administrator. Missy Nitch, an Activity Aide on The Garden’s neighborhood, and Unit Manager Deb Noey saw the opportunity for residents to bake cookies and other desserts as an enjoyable recipe that blended conversation, baking together, and being able to offer others the tasty results. Nancy Dunmire, a member of the St. Paul’s Board of Directors who is known for her outstanding culinary skills, and her son Andrew, who designs the kitchens and other areas of Eat ‘n Park Restaurants, were able to offer advice and a source for a convection oven that was compact, portable and produced outstanding baked goods. An oven was acquired on consignment to determine if it would meet the needs of the resident’s at St. Paul’s and if there was sufficient interest among the residents. Soon the aroma of cookies baking filled the neighborhood in The Gardens. It brought back memories of mom making cookies, of late night baking for a son or daughter’s school activity the following day and of gathering with family and friends to make cookies for a holiday or wedding, or just to enjoy baking with friends. Visitors had an immediate reaction as they entered the neighborhood. “Cookies baking?” was a frequent question. And residents, staff and visitors unanimously deemed the baking a success as they sampled the warm cookies. Contributions from friends of St. Paul’s have provided for three of the ovens. Based on the demand for the ovens and contributions, additional convection ovens will be added to various neighborhoods. “The ovens – and their delicious desserts – have been a hit with anyone who visits the neighborhood during baking time,” commented Tammy Lininger, Villas Administrator. “Convection ovens cut down on the baking time and because they are portable, we can move them from one neighborhood to another as needed.” “Our residents on The Gardens are enjoying both baking and eating the cookies and other desserts,” said Missy Nitch. “I am pleased to be associated with St. Paul’s which offers residents many opportunities to take part in activities that they enjoyed and that were part of their lives for many years,” Nancy Dunmire added. “I am looking forward to baking scones with residents.” Cookies aren’t the only item on the baker’s menu. A staff members recently brought in frozen dough and the residents made delicious cinnamon rolls (one resident admitted to eating three because they were so good). Toaster pastries are also a favorite!
