Johnston Deb Moyer The Heritage Resident Council The Heritage Resident Funds Dr. Bill Thomas, founder or The Eden Alternative, recently paid a visit to Conneautville, PA in support of a fundraising event hosted by Rolling Fields Nursing Home, another Eden facility. Proceeds from the event helped cover convention costs for this year’s International Conference held in Colorado this past June. Ten Eden Associates from St. Paul’s attended the event and had the opportunity to meet Dr. Bill and hear from him personally about this culture change movement. The Eden Alternative’s philosophy is built around 10 principles with its major focus on transforming nursing homes and assisted living residences from institutions to comfortable places to call home. According to Dr. Bill, “It’s about injecting life into senior communities.” St. Paul’s has been a registered Eden Alternative community since 2005 and recently completed a milestone by validating Principle Six which states, “Meaningless activity corrodes the human spirit. The opportunity to do things that we find meaningful is essential to human health.” Our focus over the past two years has been on building strong and personal relationships among residents and staff and creating meaningful opportunities. Validation simply means that we have met the criteria of The Eden Alternative regarding that particular Principle. At the Rolling Fields event, attendees also toured the facility, talked with staff about their Eden Journey, and listened to various speakers on aspects of the philosphy. 14
In May, St. Paul’s Auxiliry held it’s annual meeting. President Lois Eastlick presided over the meeting. The Auxiliary presented Tammy Lininger, Villas administrator, with a check for $10,000, the first installment of The Auxiliary’s Arms of Love & Service support of the purchase of new spas - one at The Ridgewood (pictured) and one for The Heritage (to be purchased at a later date). Other activities of the auxiliary’s fundraising efforts include the Annual Yard Sale and Car Wash as well as the bi-annual Book Sale. Since its inception, The Auxiliary has raised more than $260,000 towards projects, equipment, furnishings, and much more that benefit the residents at St. Paul’s Auxiliary Hosts Annual Meeting
