Miami will hand it to Penn State

I'm having a little trouble looking
into my crystal ball right now. It's
been clouded by all the preseason
magazines I've read; seems everyone
is down on the Big Ten these days. It's
the hip thing to do. Even the Big Ten
coaches don't know what to think of
the 2001 season, other than to say its
anyone's game. Well, almost anyone's
game. (Sorry, Indiana.)
Who knows what the college football
gods have in store for the most
powerful Midwestern football conference
this season? (Sorry, Mid-American
Conference.) However, this will be
a tough first week for most of the Big
Ten, and there could be a few mild
surprises.
Illinois at California
Let the Reisman hype begin. I, for
one, have gotten many a mile out of
my complimentary Kurt·Kittner-for­
Heisman reporter's pad I was given at
media day, though it isn't half as cool
as our new Antwaan Randle El mouse
pad. Too bad I don't

gettovote.

Ron Turner's crew
gets started down the
road toward another
mediocre season with
a West Coast swing
against one of the most boring teams
in the PAC-10. While the Bears may
play conservative football, they will
be impro'(ed over last year's 3-8
record, and the first team to find this
out will be the lllini.

Miami (Ohio) at Michigan
No doubt several Hawkeye fans will
be looking for the outcome of this
game to gauge the
strength of the Red- Q 0
Hawks. Don't bother. Mmjlili.ti+
Michigan isn't the Q\7Q
type of team that
allows one to accurately
gauge a mid-major's ability on
the gridiron.
Even without QB Drew Henson,
who's fielding ground balls in - of all
places - Columbus, Ohio, the
Wolverines should be able to start
their quest for a Big Ten champi~
onship relatively unscathed.

Would the real Miami please stand
up? I'm very confused
right now.
Looks like the
folks in State College
might have
been a little
befuddled, too,
when they made this whopper the
season opener.
Joe Pa will have an uphill climb to
tie Bear Bryant's record for most victories
by a Division I coach when
Larry Coker makes his Miami debut.

Purdue at Cincinnati
Someone not named Brees will be
running the Boilermakers
offense when
Purdue tangles with
the pesky Bearcats.
Redshirt frosh Brandon
Hance is the
lucky man with very
large shoes to fill.
Cincinnati nearly stunned Wisconsin
last season and may come close to
pulling one out again against another
Big Ten foe. The Bearcats' defensive
issues may make Hance's starting
debut remind folks in West Lafayette
of Brees, if only for a week.
Purdue 28, Cincinnati 13
Wisconsin at Oregon
And you thought Barry Alvarez had
a bad limp now. 'Just wait until after
this one.
Perhaps the most entertaining of
all first-week games for the Big Ten is
this matchup
featuring the ~

truly mighty
Oregon Ducks
and Big Ten
leader (if only for
a week) Badgers.
Entertaining only because Iowa fans
take great pleasure in watching the
Badgers lose, even more so when they
lose badly.
Enjoy this one, Hawkeye fans; the
Badgers may not lose many other
games this season.
