Best of luck Louise Brown
Year 10 basketballer Louise Brown will represent the
Australian U’17 team against New Zealand in the
Oceania qualifiers from September 22 nd to 24 th at
the Australian Institute of Sport.
Louise has had to overcome some injury concerns
over the past couple of months to be available for
the tournament. We wish her well!
State Golf
Congratulations to golfer Cameron John who will
represent the Victorian Team in Adelaide next term.
Cameron has performed very consistently over the
past couple of years in all tournaments and is a
worthy state representative.
State Champions
It has been a very busy few weeks with a number of
teams winning state titles. They include:

The Year 7 netball
The year 7 and Year 8 Boys Soccer
It is a reward for all the hard work that the coaches,
players, physios, exercise physiologists and other
McDonalds Cup Finals
A reminder about the McDonalds Cup Grand Finals
that will be taking place on Friday, October 14 th at
Eltham Basketball Stadium.
The draw is as follows:
Intermediate girls vs CLC 2.30pm
Senior girls vs Box Hills SS.C 5.30pm
Senior boys vs Box Hill SS.C 7.30pm
The intermediate girls will be transported by bus for
the afternoon games, while the Senior Girls and Boys
are asked to make their own way there.
Students are required to be at the courts one hour
prior to the commencement of their game.
Upcoming trips
Junior netball
Our Year 7/8 netballers are travelling to Westfield
Sports HS in Sydney between October 21 to 23 to
play games on the Saturday and Sunday.
USA Basketball Tour
Fifteen boys, two teachers and Coach Alex Palozzolo
depart November 30 for a 22 day tour with games in
a variety of cities including Nashville, Mayfield and
Louisville with sightseeing in Los Angeles prior to
their return.
Australian Schools Championships
From December 5-9 our Intermediate Boys and Girls
basketball teams will take on the best basketball
school in the country. Bendigo will again be the
venue as our girls aim to go one better in 2011.

Netball Victoria Zone Academy Assessment Day |
Interview with Jacquelyn Carroll by Micaela Addie
What is Zone Academy?
With the player pathway, most players start at a club
level which is a domestic team, then you have
representative level which is playing for your
association. Above that is regional level, which
includes teams such as Henderson and Dandenong
Valley. Zone academy is the next step above that.
There is a screening day where players must try out
to get accepted into the academy for the following
year. After this trial day the selectors will choose up
to a group of 40 players to represent the Central
East Zone Academy in 2012. The Victorian 17 and
under 2013 team is selected from all players within
the 2012 6 Zone academies throughout Victoria.
How do you get chosen to trial for Zone
Academy?
There is a tournament held at an association where
coaches and selectors watch players. If they believe
certain players have talent and they believe they will
be successful, they talent identify them. The players
that have been talent identified on this day receive a
letter and application to try out for Zone Academy.
What do selectors look for on the day?
Before the trials began the coaches briefed the
players and explained what they would be looking
for throughout the day. They told us that they were
looking for:
The ability to listen to instruction, take on
any advice and put it into practice and onto
the court.
Intensity through doing every drill and
playing the hardest you can play.
Execution of every pass and the knowledge
of where to pass and receive the ball and
court sense.
What are the key things for doing well at trials
& what advice would you give?
Just play as you normally would play. You
have got nothing to lose, just to gain.
Listen to your coaches and instructors so
you can execute the drill in the best way
possible.
Think positive and always stay focussed.
Do everything with intensity. There is no
point of being there if you do not perform
the best you can
Remember to enjoy yourself and have a
good time. You are there because someone
believes you have talent

Year 9 & 10 Netballers playing with the BIG TIME!

RSA Netball Coach
In Term 3 our Year 9 and 10 Netballers
started playing in the Knox Midweek
Competition every Wednesday. The
competition is tough and challenging and
our players need to use their court smarts
against experienced and considerably older
players. We have had some great wins,
some tight matches and few loses throughout
the fixture so far. As a development
program our teams are ineligible for finals,
however this has offered us the opportunity
to try out many combinations and maximise
court time for all.
As an added bonus the players have had
the opportunity to play alongside ANZ
Championship players Kara Richards
(defender Adelaide Thunderbirds 2011) and
Ashlee Howard (goaler West Coast Fever
2011). This experience has demonstrated to
many of the players the intensity at which
you must work to play at your best across a
whole game. Their leadership and coaching
on court adds another dimension to court
application of skills learnt in training. As we
progress through the fixture a number of
players from Netball Victoria Elite programs
will be invited to play alongside our
netballers.

Congratulations to the Year 7
RSA Netballers

RSA Netball Coach
Throughout Terms 2 and 3, 9 Year 7
Academy Netballers represented Rowville
Secondary College in the School Sport
Victoria State Titles.
This involved four tournament days where
the girls competed against schools firstly
from the Rowville area and eventually
ended with the three Conference winners
attending the Finals Day held at Waverley
Netball Centre.
The girls had been working extremely hard
at training on perfecting their long court
systems and court structures, as well as
improving their attacking and defensive
skills.
On Monday 5 th September two matches
were played to determine who would finish
1 st , 2nd or 3 rd in Victoria. The team was
challenged in both matches against by two
very skillful, strong and well drilled teams
(Trinity College and Catholic College
Bendigo).
Finally the girls were able to test their skills
against tough opposition. The girls had to
fight right to the end with a narrow 2 goal
victory to determine that they were the best
Year 7 Netball team in Victoria for 2011.

RSA Golf
Term 3 training efforts will be put to the
test in the first week of the school break at
the 2011 Boys and Girls Championship of
Victoria.
In the second week the squad will be
travelling around Melbourne to a number of
other day events.
The Aaron Baddeley International Junior
Championship conducted the Victorian
Qualifying recently at the Yering Golf Club,
and good finishes from RSA players which
included Nick Mills T2 U/17, Harry ONeill
Top 10 U/16 and Cameron John T2 U/14.
These players will move forward to the
Australian Final to be played at the Heritage
Golf Club in October, where the leading four
boys at the event will go to China and
represent Australia in the International
Championship.
Finally, Cameron John has won a place in
the Victorian 12 and under team, after
shooting a championship record score of 62
(10 under par) at the State Final held
recently at Kooringal Golf Club.
He will now travel to Adelaide with the
Victorian Team to play the National
Championship in November.
Thank you for the support of the parents
and staff who came and supported the girls
I know that extra support they received
really spurred them on to win!

VCE VET Sport and Recreation – Trees Adventure

VET Sport & Recreation Teachers
On Thursday the 8 th of September the year 12
VCE VET Sport and Recreation classes visited
‘Trees Adventure’ in the Glen Harrow Gardens in
Belgrave.
Trees Adventure is a high ropes course
with challenges that really tested the very
confident and athletic group. The students were
given safety instructions and were then able to
test out the various courses, which varied in
difficulty.
Many students overcame their fear of
heights and found physical strength they never
knew they had.
The VET Sport and Recreation students
showed off their leadership skills by the
constant support and encouragement towards
their peers and teachers.
All students returned to school with a
sense of achievement from the excursion, which
for many will be the last of their school years.

PHYSIOTHERAPY SESSIONS
A notice to all families: We, as a school, are very
fortunate to have Rowville Sports Medicine on site
offering consultation to students free of charge. We
ask that if you choose to use this service that you
please remind students that it is vital they turn up to
appointments. We are seeing an increasing amount of
appointments being missed and as many of you know
this not only costs money but more importantly wastes
a session that another student would have
appreciated. Please let Simone Farrugia know in
advance if your child will be absent for a scheduled
session.
If a student missies multiple appointments with the
physio with no prior notification then they will be at
risk to be ineligible for further sessions.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation and
understanding.

Parents please note that any payments for the
Rowville Sports Academy must be made through
Kerri Manning at the RSA office located at the
back of the Performing Arts Centre.
