NEWSLETTER – February 2010
Carshalton Boys Sports College OFSTED Subject Survey
Inspection 26 th -27 th January 2010.
The overall effectiveness of English was judged to be “good”
Whilst the inspection focused on English, the HMI leading
inspector commented on many “whole school” aspects ……
Well done to everyone!
More recognition of the school’s
summer achievements also arrived
this half term….

News and Events since December
I would like to thank all the staff, Students and parents who raised £1200 for the Haite Earthquake
appeal.
All Monies will be going to Shelter Box http://www.shelterbox.org
Challenge Day February 4 th 2010
Well done to all staff who took part in
yesterday’s challenge day. A whole host of
activities ensured the boys had fun, made
progress and were given access to events that
couldn’t normally be offered in our school day.
A particular thank you to the many staff who
led on activities. Even Boris Johnson wanted to
be part of the day and was so desperate to
have his photograph taken with our boys, that
he ran over from his bike with his trouser clips
still in place! Matt Robinson
For Challenge Day the Yr10 BTEC pupils
completed their final day working with visiting artist Jennie Grover. The students have begun to
assemble their children's pop-up books which will go on display after half term. The wide range
skills, techniques and creative ideas shown by the boys is very impressive.
Lauren Avery

The boys really loved the challenge creating their own
building materials and then using it in a design of they
own making. They all seemed really proud of their creation
in the end. Randall Wilson
We took the Y10 food technology group to Jamie Oliver’s
cookery school ‘Recipease’ in Clapham Junction, where
they learned to make fresh pasta and tomato sauce (and
then scoffed the lot!). The boys impressed the staff so
much that they offered two of them work experience
placements next summer, and gave all of them a goodie
bag to take away. A fantastic day….the boys spent the
whole journey home asking how soon they could go back!
Sarah Tyson and Jenny Gaylor
I and around thirty other year ten students visited Kingston University as
a part of our Challenge Day activities. Having previously been visited by
ambassadors at school in two sessions
in the lead up to the day, on the day itself we participated in skills based
activities throughout the morning, which helped us all to learn the best
and most effective ways of learning and revising by using interactive
systems, before we moved onto look at the internet and how effective
and useful it really is by presenting to the rest of the group either a
positive or negative side of the argument. This was followed by a tour
around the campus, which
I found a useful tool to get an insight into what university life at this
particular campus would be like and then to finish off our brief visit of the
site, we had lunch in their ‘food store’. Louis Montebello.
Once then arriving back at school, Mrs Ellis then
talked to us about ‘Ucas’ and how we able to
apply to universities, as well as what we require
and how we can found out. This was with
assistance from
Dan Kent and Matthew Bosley, who spoke to us in
smaller groups about their personal experiences
and how they applied. Overall I found the day to
be very useful and it has definitely opened my
mind up to all the options there are available and
has made me think more about what I want to do
at university and how I am going to get there. I
bought these specimens back from the museum
with me! Beverley Rose

Schools recognised for community cohesion – 19 January 2010 SSAT press release
14 specialist schools and academies have been recognised for their outstanding work promoting
community cohesion at a national ceremony.
The schools from across the country have all achieved the Cultural Diversity Quality Standard
(CDQS) which was developed by the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust (SSAT) to promote
cultural diversity, race equality and opportunities for achievements for all students.
The celebration, organised by the SSAT, took place on 18 January 2010 in London at the offices of
Deloitte, the professional services organisation, who sponsored the event.
Ted Cantle, Chair of the Community Cohesion Institute, who coined the term 'community cohesion',
was the keynote speaker.
He said:
'The schools who have been successful in achieving the Cultural Diversity Quality Standard are
beacons for other schools who have not embraced the community cohesion agenda as readily -
they can inspire others and show them that it is possible to achieve fantastic things, whatever the
challenges.'
Year 11
Year 11 have been working on a Plastics Assignment for Additional Science
GCSE. This photo show Nathaniel Kirby-Miller and Nemat Jafari testing plastic
bags for strength and elasticity. This bag came from Purley Sports Centre and
was extremely stretchy and strong. Nemat is showing the original size of the
strip of plastic cut from the plastic bag.
Petra Flint
Year 10
Year 10 are now very much heading towards key examination and assessment dates, especially
with English coursework deadlines, Maths GCSE module 3 exams on March 2 nd for all except sets 1
and 2, and Science GCSE modular exams for several students on 4 th and 5 th of March .
You will shortly be receiving a letter from Mr
Harrison (Head of Maths) and Mrs Morris (Head
of English) regarding things that are happening
for your son specifically in these two subjects. If
this letter has not arrived to you by Monday 15 th
February, please contact me via email
(blaker@carshaltonboys.org) or phone (020 8644 7325) during the half term and I will give you
the details of the letter personally. It will include key information regarding important deadlines
and exam dates and give you an insight into how you can best be
helping your son’s to prepare for these at home. If your son is in any
way unsure of his entry and preparation requirements for Science
exams, please contact me ASAP and I will direct you to the correct
person in the Science department for this information.
You will of course also have an opportunity to speak with your son’s
teachers at year 10 parents evening on Thursday February 25 th . This
will be a vital opportunity for your son’s to celebrate with you their
achievements and for you to gather information about how they are
doing and what you can help them do at home to improve upon their
grades. Please make every effort to attend this event.
Finally it is important to highlight the key role that good attendance and
punctuality will play in helping students to achieve to their full potential over the coming months.
We have a weekly rewards assembly on a Friday for those with 100% attendance and punctuality
for the week and tutors are also constantly reminding the boys of the importance of being in school
every day on time. Thank you for the work you do on this from the home end of things – I
appreciate teenage boys may not always want to wake up in the mornings! but the
encouragement and support you give pays off in the achievements that the boys make so thank
you once again.
Barry Laker and the year 10 tutor team.

Year 9
A very busy time for the Year 9 lads!
After a very well attended Year 9 Parents and Options
Evening, the boys now have to make sure they look in to
exactly what subjects are going to pick to ensure they achieve
good levels at Key Stage 4.
Twenty one pupils received the first award of the Swan badgehanded
out for bettering their target minimum grades in at
least two of English, Maths and Science this year. Many
congratulations to those boys who achieved this feat and
here’s looking at being able to hand out more of them at
Easter.
Well done to Tanwa Sripan, Champ Briggs and Marco Abrunhosa for coming 1 st , 2 nd and 3 rd
respectively in the Individual Rewards League and to 9F for picking up the In It To Win It Cup for
the first time, with 9S coming a close second. The set up for these two competitions has changed
slightly, with the emphasis more on attainment linked to target minimum levels, and effort and
behaviour taken directly from their interim reports.
Another successful Aim Higher trip to Kingston University took place last week with the boys again
being fine ambassadors for the school
The year 9’s have also been involved in writing war poems in English, I have included a couple of
lines from two of the poems, and a fantastic photo of Keian Francis-Smith and Lance Chigariro in
the trenches’ of World War 2.
“ Blood shot, Body rot, Bloodshed, Young bled, Guns shot, Men fought, men died, Generals did not
try” Josue Samuel 9N
“Will you succeed? Or will you fail, because it’s not like prison, you can’t get bail” Troy Hendry 9S
Andy Brown and the year 9 tutor team
Year 8
The Successful and very proud year 8 ‘Achievement’ Badge winners.
I am pleased to say that despite the best
efforts of the weather and in particularly the
snow Year 8 continue to be working well.
Each Friday in our Year assemblies the
students have focused on a range of topics
all researched and delivered by the students
themselves.
8C Stay safe.
The main year focus continues to be on
8E Achieving economic well being.
the importance of punctuality and
8F Be healthy.
attendance along with homework and
attitudes to study. These are particularly
8M Enjoy and achieve.
important as they set solid foundations
8N Literacy.
for future success. Please ensure that
8P Making a positive contribution to our community.
your son seeks to maximise his
8R Child soldiers
attendance as all studies show a strong
8S Numeracy
link between this and academic
achievement. Homework will build on the work undertaken in the classroom and starts to put in
place the discipline required to achieve.Let’s keep it up!
PE Department
Rugby
Lots of fixtures being played across all year groups and CBSC regularly coming out on top. We’ve
enjoyed making some new friends in our rugby games recently and have been playing Boxhill and
Graveney, as well as visiting old friends such as Emmanuel, Sutton Grammar and John Fisher.
Football
We’re approaching the important time of the year and have lots of teams still involved in the hunt
for Silverware. Particular improvements from the Year 9’s this year have been noticed as a result
of their hard work over the previous 2 years. They are still in the 4 th round of the London Cup and
Semi final of the Sutton cup. A great example of continued effort and determination.
The year 7 Football Team marched on to the fourth round of the London Cup on Tuesday beating
Lammas School 7 - 1. The students played superbly, with goals from Donte Whyte 2, Ryan
Bywater, Adam Latter 2, Kyle Hall and Casey Cain. Notable performances from Harry Kington,
Donte Whyte and MOM going to Perry Weller, however the whole team were outstanding. They will
go on to play Petchey Academy in the next round. The team are due to play in the fourth round of
the Surrey Cup and are still in the Sutton Cup. Well done to the Year 7 Football Squad.
Basketball
The recruitment of a high standard coach to work with our Senior basketball teams has seem
dramatic improvements and some positive results. We’re looking to develop our programme and
develop links with local clubs and have a big drive on our basketball over the coming years.
Sport Leaders
The boys mentioned below were selected for a conference
on Potential Leaders of Tomorrow on the 21 st January 2010.
The day was designed to invoke discussion about theories
and concepts using sports analogy. The conference
provided the students with skills to be able to reflect on
experiences, show independence and develop responsibility
within their lives. The students had a fantastic time and
took a huge amount of skills and ideas from the workshop.
In addition the host, a former Silver medallist Olympian
and the teachers from Rutlish and Bishopsford commented
on how impressed they were with their attitudes.
Mitch Longo, Greg Allen, Charlie Saunders, Amarley Tomlinson, Kyle Izzard,
Gavin Mckelvie, Sam Brown, Gerald Chigariro, Jake Cunningham, Jack Greenaway
Year 7 Biathlon
On the 24 th January three students from CBSC entered the South
West Schools' Biathlon Q12 and represented Carshalton Boys Sports
College at the Bath University Sports Training Village. The students
George Boyland, Kane Nurse and Dylan Nurse, were up against
students from South west of England. The students finished all
performed outstandingly at a regional event and as a Team managed
to win the qualifying section, beating many established Biathlon
schools. George Boyland finished a respectable 11 th while Dylan and
Kane could only just be separated, Dylan finishing 2 nd overall and
Kane 3 rd . Dylan by the smallest margin will go on to represent CBSC at the British Schools’ Modern
Biathlon Championships to be held at Crystal Palace National Sport Centre on 21st March 2010.

Summer Sports Programme
Work is well underway on our summer PE and Enrichment programme. We are looking to use
Sutton arena, Sutton Tennis Centre, and other venues around the local area. If you have any
ideas of sports or activities you’d like to try, please let the Mr Middleton know asap and we will look
at all suggestions.
Exams and Coursework
Deadlines loom for a whole of host of pupils across
varying year groups studying PE and Sport courses. It
might be practical moderation, BTEC deadlines, or
examination dates. Either way we advise hard work
and organisation and wish you the best of luck.
