The Church of Ireland College of Education offers a three-year undergraduate course leading to the
Dublin University degree of Bachelor in Education (B.Ed.), a professional degree which provides for the
academic and professional requirements of primary school teachers. The course covers content and
teaching methodology in all subjects of the primary school curriculum. It also enables students to
engage with the theoretical aspects of education including psychology, sociology, curriculum studies,
philosophy and history. Teaching Practice and placement in schools is a core feature of the B.Ed. and is
embedded in each year’s programme.
To be considered for admission to the College students must satisfy the entrance requirements of the
College and the Department of Education and Skills. In addition to specified Leaving Certificate subject
requirements, students must pass a suitability interview and medical examination. At present, all
available places on the B.Ed. programme are reserved for those who are members of recognised
Churches in the Protestant tradition, and who are aware of and willing to support the distinctive ethos
of Protestant primary schools.
The College also provides a one-year Postgraduate Diploma in Learning Support and Special
Educational Needs which is open to all serving primary and post-primary teachers, as well as those
working in special schools and other recognised education services, including those who provide
Learning Support, Resource Teaching and Resource Teaching for Travellers. A circular letter is available
from the Department of Education and Skills for each academic year which includes all relevant
information and application forms. These can also be accessed from www.cice.ie in January/February
for the following year’s entry.
The Master of Arts (Education) focuses on Learning Support/Special Educational Needs. The course is
open to graduates of the Postgraduate Diploma in Learning Support and Special Educational Needs or
equivalent. The Course begins in January of each year. Information and application forms may be
accessed from www.cice.ie in October/November.
The College runs a one-year Certificate Course for Special Needs Assistants which is open to those
special needs assistants who have satisfactorily completed the relevant twenty-hour Introductory
Course for Special Needs Assistants delivered through the network of education centres. Applicants
must be currently employed as special needs assistants in mainstream primary or post-primary schools
or in special schools. Information and application forms are available from www.cice.ie in April/May for

Sunday Readings

Common Prayer (the listings for a Third Service are not included). Copyright approval has
been given to reproduce these. Those for weekdays from tables approved by the House of

Press 2003).
The ‡ prefaced to Gospel readings in the Second Service listing is a provision to be used if
that service is a celebration of Holy Communion.
Weekday Psalms
Psalter provision is given for Morning (M) and Evening (E). During seasons a selection of
psalms appropriate to the season is arranged. In ordinary time psalms are for the most part
read in course. The final cycle of the year omits some psalms well-used during the seasons.
An optional provision indicated by [B] is the provision in the Consultation for Common
Texts Revised Common Lectionary Daily Readings: normally the same psalm for the
Thursday, Friday and Saturday preceding Sunday and another for Monday, Tuesday and
Wednesday following.

Listing A is from the two-year programme which covers almost the whole Bible in
semicontinuous reading over the two years. This may be used at either the Morning or
Evening office. In the alternate year the New Testament readings are mostly from the
gospels. This year they are mostly from the rest of the New Testament. In this way the
whole of the New Testament is read over two years. The greater part of the Old Testament
is also covered over the two years.
Listing B is from Revised Common Lectionary Daily Readings drawn up by the compilers of
the Revised Common Lectionary and published in 2005. Readings for Thursday, Friday and
Saturday help to prepare for the coming Sunday; those for Monday, Tuesday and
Wednesday reflect upon it. Where MP and EP are celebrated this may be used either in the
morning or evening. Because of its link with the Sunday readings of the three year cycle,
when only one office is celebrated this may be used where an irregular congregation might
find the A table less than helpful. This listing is from Revised Common Lectionary Daily

The readings cited under HC are now published printed out by Canterbury Press as The
Common Worship Daily Eucharistic Lectionary (2008).
