participants viewed <strong>the</strong> issue <strong>of</strong> future prevention. According to <strong>the</strong> second perspective,<br />
conflict was seen as a symptom <strong>of</strong> a grievance. Participants who analysed conflict from<br />
this perspective tended to be aware <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> historical and contemporary grievances <strong>of</strong><br />
minority communities in Sri Lanka and <strong>of</strong>ten self-identified with those grievances. They<br />
reflected on how minority communities have been deprived <strong>of</strong> rights such as land rights,<br />
employment opportunities and education. They claimed that <strong>the</strong> deprivation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se<br />
basic rights—which led to those historical and contemporary grievances—was at <strong>the</strong> root<br />
<strong>of</strong> conflict. These participants emphasised <strong>the</strong> need for raising awareness and mutual<br />
understanding between communities, and cultivating values amongst <strong>the</strong> next generation<br />
in order to guarantee basic rights and ensure non-recurrence <strong>of</strong> violence and conflict.<br />
