A “Thank You” Note—from Monsignor Greg
Dear Father John, Father Vic, Father Samuel, and the entire parish family of Saint Francis of Assisi in
Henderson, Nevada:
I was very happy to be home on the weekend of the Epiphany to celebrate my Silver Jubilee of
Ordination to the Priesthood in my home Diocese of Las Vegas. And, to celebrate a Sunday Mass at
Saint Francis of Assisi parish whenever I am in Nevada is always a joy for me. But the blessings and
surprises that you showered upon me this past Epiphany were beyond imagination: the beautiful chasuble
and stole adorned with the Franciscan Crest, the melodious string quintet accompanying your choir and
schola cantorum, and the moving polyphonic rendition of Ecce Sacerdos Magnus!
The lunch in the piazza that followed the Mass was equally splendid, and brought back many fond
memories of the shared fellowship I had with you. Though words never do justice, and only the Holy
Sacrifice of the Mass is fitting thanksgiving for the gift of the Priesthood, nevertheless, to all those
parishioners (visible and invisible) who made this Epiphany 2013 a day that I will never forget, please
accept this humble expression of gratitude.
May I share with you some of the impressions and comments of my classmates who were
concelebrating with me at that Epiphany Mass at Saint Francis of Assisi parish: “This is truly a special,
Spirit-filled place”; “This church has been blessed by God”; “The way the parishioners share their gifts
and talents is something wonderful to behold”; “I already feel a part of this parish family”; “Can I stay
here?”. I think that if there were a way for them to uproot Saint Francis and transplant it in their home
dioceses, they would have tried. So I must say “Thank You” for being wonderful witnesses of Christ
Jesus and His Love to all, as you have certainly been to me in my Priesthood. Epiphany reveals that all
peoples have been invited to come to the Lord; continue to be that beacon of welcoming light and
evangelizing love for all, dear family of Saint Francis of Assisi.
I have returned to Washington, D.C. with much joy in my heart (although a little tired after all the
celebrations), but I look forward to my next visit west, when I hope to raise up again the chalice of
salvation, in thanksgiving, among you. You are always in my prayers.

Gift Card Drive for Seminarians
To show our support for our seminarians from the diocese
while they are away at school, the SFA Vocations
Committee is sponsoring a “Gift Card Drive” on the
weekends of February 2-3 and 9-10. We will have a table
set up after each Mass to collect Gift Cards to be sent to our
seven seminarians: Luke Burgis, Sean Dresden, Jesus
Garcia, Felipe Jimenez, Miguel Corral, Daniel Monroe and
Omar Mejia. If you would like to contribute to this drive,
we suggest the following Gift Cards would be the most

Moms Group Invitation!
The St. Francis of Assisi Moms Group invites
the mothers of our parish to our first meeting
of the year! Join us this week, Tuesday,
January 22nd at 6:30 p.m. in the Our Lady
room for a "Recipe Exchange" potluck evening of fun &
socializing. Bring a dish (main, side, or dessert) to share
along with 20 copies of the recipe for others to take
home. (If you don't cook just pick up your favorite "standby"
at the store and come share in the goodies!) Whether
you are pregnant with your first child or are raising high
school age children - or anything in between - we welcome
you to our group! Our purpose is to encourage each other in
our vocation of motherhood and our Catholic Faith. For

Monthly Family Masses
We are excited to continue our monthly "Family Masses". In
these Masses we will have children and their
families get involved in the liturgical
ministries during that Mass. We are
designating the third Sunday of the month,
alternating between the 9:30 a.m. and 11:30
a.m. Masses, as our monthly family Mass. If
you are interested in having your child (2nd
grade and older) participate as a reader, usher, carrying up

SOCIAL JUSTICE OPPORTUNITIES
Feb 19-Mar 29—Living Stations of the Cross: beginning Tuesday 2/19 we will have rehearsals
for the teen’s Living Stations of the Cross to be performed on Good Friday. From 6:30p-8p
we will make costumes, prepare reflections, choose music, and practice our performance so that
by Good Friday we can lead the parish in prayer during the living stations. We need teen actors,
adult leaders who can sew and teach teens to sew, donations of fabric and props, and adult
help with sound and logistics.

Stop and Think.
Have you ever stopped to think about reparation? When I was younger I used to enjoy
taking apart things. I took apart a TV, a VCD, a radio, and several other electronics just
to see what the insides looked like. The problem was when I tried to put them back
together things didn't always fit back they way they were supposed to and the VCR was
never the same again. I was not an expert at electronic reparation. Usually when
things break and we know we can’t fix them ourselves we call the professional to come
in and fix them, but what do we do when it is our heart and soul that is broken? There
might be times in our lives when we are heartbroken and it seems that no one can fix
our brokenness, there are also times when our soul is so stained with sin that it seems
beyond reparation. Who do we call in this situation? This week’s readings help shed
some light on how God is an expert at repairing our brokenness. The first reading from
Isaiah shows us how when Israel turned to God they went from being called “forsaken”
and “desolate” to God’s “delight” and God’s “espoused”. Then in our Gospel reading
Jesus performs his first public miracle at a wedding in Cana. In the miracle he turns
water into wine. Wine in scripture is a symbol of joy, and at this particular wedding the
wine (or joy) had run out. We are very familiar with what happens next, but I want to
focus on the water that was transformed into wine. The scripture tells us there were 6
water jars that were used for ceremonial washing. Each member at the wedding feast
would first clean the dirt off their feet and hands in these pots. This means that this
was the dirtiest and most disgusting water you can imagine. Jesus takes this rejected,
dirty water and transforms it into the best wine. This show us that when we are
without joy, heart and soul broken it doesn’t matter how filthy in sin we are or how
rejected we feel Jesus can transform us and fill us to the brim with joy. If you are
feeling broken, take this time to run to Jesus in adoration or reconciliation and receive
the joy he desires to give you.

Second Collection this week to benefit the Church of Central Europe and Latin America
My Dear Parishioners,
On the weekend of January 20, the diocese will take up a second collection to benefit the Church of Central Europe and
Latin America.
The Church in Latin America boasts the world’s largest Catholic population. However, a study commissioned in the
late 1990s by the federation of Latin American Catholic Bishops’ Conference found that Latin Americans were leaving
the Church at the alarming rate due to a very low priest-to-parishioner ratio and the local churches’ inability to support
the substantial number of parishioners. This collection supplies support for various pastoral projects throughout Latin
America and the Caribbean such as the work of evangelization, formation of laity, religious and seminarians, as well as
youth ministry and catechesis.
This special collection channels aid through the Bishops’ Conferences of Central and Eastern Europe to meet the needs
of rebuilding the Church; training seminarians and lay leaders, supporting social service programs youth ministry,
pastor and catechetical centers, schools, church construction and renovation, and evangelization through Catholic mass
media. Many parishes struggle in places where Catholics are in the minority with lack of proper places of worship and
the ability to provide pastoral care, and most importantly, cannot support themselves.

♦ Parish Registration: In order that we may better serve you,
please register in the parish. This way you are known to us when
requesting the services of the church. Registration forms are
available in the literature rack in the vestibule or on the parish
web site. Also, please notify the parish office of changes of
address, phone, or e-mail, or if you are moving out of the area.
Changes can be emailed to sedler@sfahdnv.org or simply drop a
note in the collection basket.
♦ Baptism: Baptisms for infants to six year olds are celebrated on
the second and fourth Sundays of most months at 1:00 p.m.
Parents must be registered, active parishioners for at least 3
months, and attend the baptism class usually held on the third
Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m. Next class will be Monday,
January 28th at 7:00 p.m. (4th Monday due to MLK
Holiday). Contact Nancy Sedler at 914-2175 for an appointment
to schedule a baptism once the baptism packet is complete.
♦ Marriage: Couples planning marriage should contact the parish
as soon as they become engaged because at least six months is
ordinarily necessary to fulfill marriage preparation
requirements. At least one party must be a registered,
participating member of the parish. The first step is for both
parties to attend the Marriage Information Meeting on the fourth
Thursday of most months at 6:30 p.m. Next meeting: Thursday,
Jan. 24th at 6:30 p.m. After that meeting, contact Debbie for an
appointment with one of the priests or deacon.
Important: Those with prior marriages, religious or civil, must
make an appointment with a priest prior to attending the Marriage
Information Meeting to determine freedom to marry. (This
requirement does not apply to those who are widowed.)
♦ Anointing of the Sick: The priest will often be able to anoint you
after Mass (except Saturdays after the 7:45 a.m. & 4:00 p.m.
Masses). Please call the parish if you need to receive the
anointing of the sick at home. In emergency situations when the
office is closed, the answering service will relay the information
to one of the priests. In case of hospitalization, let the hospital
staff know that you would like to have the Catholic priest
chaplain see you.
♦ Holy Communion to the Sick: If you are at home, please call the
parish office and an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion
will visit you. In case of hospitalization, inform the hospital staff
that you are a Catholic and would like to receive Holy
Communion.
♦ Mass Intentions: Mass requests are scheduled through the parish
office during office hours up to 11 months in advance.
♦ Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament: Adoration of the Blessed
Sacrament is celebrated on the first Friday of the month following
the 7:45 a.m. Mass and concludes with Evening Prayer and
Benediction at 6:30 p.m.
♦ Funerals: In the event of the death of a loved one, please contact
the parish before making arrangements with a mortuary. The
parish does not make funeral arrangements with the mortuary or
other businesses but only with the loved ones of the deceased.

pain of a marriage in trouble, whether is be from lack of
communication or something more serious and you have no hope. The
Church has another avenue than Divorce. It is a program called
Retrouvaille, which will help you rebuild your marriage. We have a

Jubilee Mass for Marriage Anniversaries: On Sunday, February
10, 2013 at 2:30 p.m. the Diocese of Las Vegas will celebrate the
Annual Jubilee Mass for all couples who have been married in the
Roman Catholic Church, celebrating their Silver, Golden or other
significant wedding anniversary. The Jubilee Mass will be
celebrated by Bishop Joseph Pepe at the Guardian Angel Cathedral
with renewal of wedding vows and a reception will be held in
Anderson Hall following Mass. All are invited to join in this
